  1. Went shooting a couple weeks back, and took along an AR500 plate that I shoot at 100 yards with 308 and 223. I have a buddy with a 300 Win Mag who shot it also with SMK's. The plate is holding up well enough. I have hit it hundreds of times with 223 and 308 FMJ's and HP's, with only a few very light craters. The 300WM SMK's didn't do it any harm. Well, my buddy then shot at it using a Winchester E-Tip in his 300WM, and blew a hole straight through it. As I understand it, the ETips are solid copper bullets. Maybe this is common sense, but I figured copper would still shatter and not pierce it since copper is softer than steel. Am I missing something about these bullets? Is there a penetrator in there? Thoughts?
  2. It is a tax on those who suck at math. Having said that, I spend $2 a week on it, just so I can gripe about not winning.
  3. Well, I think in this case what did her in is that she DIDN'T made a lifestyle change.

    beer snobs

I have found that if you have a kegorator, which I do, Shiner Bock is a FANTASTIC deal. Ingle's in Powell keeps a keg of it on hand for me, and at $95/keg, is a tough bargain to beat. Even in the heat of the summer, with a lime wedge, it is VERY refreshing. I went through at least 10 kegs of it this summer by the pool.
  5. What seems to be crazy about this is that everybody is out of stock of everything amost all the time, but when they do have stock on hand, most places seem to have pretty cheap prices. Usually prices rise dramatically in he face of such demand. It may be a wise move to keep prices low by the retailers though. If people stock up on cheap parts now, they may be willing to pay more for the parts needed to complete their builds later. It really is odd to see such low prices during a phase of high demand. On the other hand, maybe the retailers just want to arm as many people as they can for any coming trouble we may face.

Chimay Blue is even better! And one big bottle is about all it takes.

    beer snobs

I am a beer snob. I prefer the local brews for sure (Downtown Brewery, Saw Works, Etc) but I like the bottled micros from around the country. A lot of times I just get Miller Lite though, not because I like it, but because I have to watch the calories. When I have a beer with my meal, it is some form of domestic church beer, like the aforementioned Lite. When I am going to go beer drinking, I go with snobbery, and just don't eat at all, drawing all my calories from the beer instead.
  8. Knoxville Tactical is opening a storefront in Powell this weekend (next to Hardees). They always have some at the Knoxville Gun Shows, and I am sure they will have some in their store.
  9. I was going for double entendre. But it is a tragic situation, and I certainly feel for the family.
  10. That After Armageddon is on demand right now on History Channel (or H2) I think. I just watched it on Comcast On Demand two weeks ago or so. Search for it. It is pretty decent, but you'll hate the kid. The biggest theme I have caught, as I mentioned before, is that it appears to be PRO second amendment. Time will tell, I suppose...but again, they make a point of the fact that ONLY the "government" is allowed to have guns, and if a civvie is caught with one, the penalty is death. The fact it is the bad guys imposing that rule, and they have painted the good guys as needing to get the guns seems rather supportive of our cause. Could be wishful thinking on my part. EDIT: Its also possible that the writers realize gun ownership is at an all time high, and that they should try to appeal to that audience.
  11. Yeah, I am not familiar with the conversions either...do they take a regular 7.62 x 39 barrel and enlarge the chamber for 308? If that is the case, the bore is probably a little large for .308 bullets because AK 7.62 x 39 bullets are .311 diameter IIRC. But please, don't listen to me on that point as I am purely speculating and no expert at all. On 308 loads, I have had great success with 168 SMK's over 46grs of varget in my SCAR. At 100 yards I am getting 5 shot one inch groups out of it pretty routinely, usually with 3 shot clovers among them, and that is metering the powder.
  12. I have a SCAR 17S with the 16 inch barrel. Shooting 175SMK's over 45.5 grains of 846, I am getting 2600FPS. I have gotten around 2650 with 168gr loads over 46 varget. I don't know how much more you would get with a 20" barrel, maybe 150-200fps? The scar has a chromed lined barrel and 4R rifling, so I don't know if that helps get more velocity or not, but a 16 inch barrel gives respectable performance. I think an 18" could be a sweet spot for handiness and velocity, however.
  13. It is very cool, but I have read you'll spend about $4k to get into it. If you have the swag, I say go for it!
  14. A small nit to pick...just because automobiles don't function anymore doesn't mean the kids hadn't had a lifetime of vandalizing the ones they run across. Also, they have showed the woman in her attic typing frantically at her functioning computer in both episodes, so I think they will go with some non-conventional form of "EMP"...like maybe it wasn't an EMP at all, but some sort of computer virus or similar nonsense. I don't think it will stand up to scrutiny either way. It is interesting that most of us--myself included--get all worked up about the plausibility of this show, but we are fine with The Walking Dead, in which somehow zombie muscles function in total absence of oxygen.
  15. The Lingerie League...that's not a joke.
  16. I like that "Gus" (Giancarlo Esposito) from Breaking Bad is the #### heel. He is sensational. They have already presented him as "the Bad Guy", but they also have shown why he does what he does, and that he isn't necessarily evil. He explains that the current government is all they have to keep society from totally collapsing, and ultimately, all he wants to do is get home to his family, which is noble. Like all network television programs, it is too "clean". It just isn't gritty enough, and I can't quite figure why. Being an AMC drama fan (Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels, Walking Dead) my standards are absurdly high, but still...big budget network TV should be able to get it right. Maybe the budgets are too big? TNT's "Falling Skies" has the same problem. There has been plenty of killing and questionable morals, but it just seems too gratuitous and processed, or "Hollywood". Also, how are their clothes all so clean? How do they all look so good? I DO like that they keep making the point about firearms being illegal and the punishment is death. They present the law as unfair and totalitarian, which promotes our beliefs in the importance of the 2nd Amendment. Clearly the show has a patriotic tilt to it as they associate the American Flag as to be hated by current government /"militia". They have tied the 2nd Amendment to the notion of what it means to be "American". I will continue to watch the show as long as it holds my interest.
  17. From here: http://money.howstuffworks.com/question213.htm Figuring out the total amount of gold that has been produced by man is a little harder. To get at some kind of estimate, let's figure that the world has been producing gold at 50 million ounces a year for 200 years. That number is probably a little high, but when you figure that the Aztecs and the Egyptians produced a fair amount of gold for a long time, it's probably not too far off. Fifty million ounces * 200 years = 10 billion ounces. Ten billion ounces of gold would fit into a cube roughly 25 meters (about 82 feet) on a side. Consider that the Washington Monument measures 55 feet by 55 feet at its base and is 555 feet tall (17 x 17 x 170 m). That means that if you could somehow gather every scrap of gold that man has ever mined into one place, you could only build about one-third of the Washington Monument. There isn't much gold in the world. It will always be worth something. Food is only worth something until it spoils. Yes, when you are hungry you will pay anything for a scrap of food...even all of your gold. What will the person who has more food than they can eat before it spoils be willing to trade it for? I bet they will trade it for some gold. It will also be easier to hide your small sack of gold coins from the local "militia" than your cattle and wagons of grain. Don't misunderstand, not saying one shouldn't be diversified in a SHTF scenario, but don't fool youself into belleving gold will not be valuable. Yes, in the early days, it may not have as much, but if you plan on living through the first year, gold is a good hedge. Back to the point though, if you are not thinking total SHTF, but more of a general decline into 3rd world status, nickels would probably be a safe bet. While not precious, the metal still has good value.
  18. For case trimming, if you don't by a package that includes one, try this one. I bought one last month on sale from Midway for about $35, and I am very happy with it. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/487924/le-wilson-case-trimmer You DO have to buy a case holder for each family of cases, but they only run about $11 each. Others may have a better solution, but don't overlook this one.
  19. I think they both went over $800 IIRC. Of course, then the 10% premium and tax. During the coin part of the auction, there was a bundle of 8 Susan B. Anthony coins for sale, and they went for $7.50. The auctioneer mused that "money ain't worth nothing anymore" referring to the fact that the face value of the coins was $8. Of course, with the 10% buyers premium and sales tax (on money...weird) the total cost to the buyer would be over $9...for $8 in coins, which aren't very collectable. Its hard to get a good deal there because of the premium and sales tax.
  20. This is what I often think as well. But if that is the case, we aren't really doing them wrong by killing them either. So no need for us to feel guilty!
  21. Just write "72 Virgins" on the rockets. Stay safe and kick ass!
  22. I get drilling the hole, but how do you get the handle opened up for the flat part of the tang, and still get it to fit tightly. The tang is a good half-inch wide, So you wouldn't want to drill a hole that big and fill in all the gap with cement. How do you cut a rectangular hole?
  23. I have an old Rambo III knife from when I was a teenager. If you are still reading...thanks. At some point in the distant past, the thin wood grip busted beyond repair. I am not interested in just finding another stock replacement handle, but would like to have something sturdier. The knives don't have a full lenth tang, but rather, the tang goes about half way, then has a threaded bolt section that is welded to it. The bolt head slips through the lower pommel, then a nut threads on and sandwhiches the pommel between it and the grip. I don't really care if I keep the pommel or not, and am not concerned about maintaining any kind of collector value. Can anyone suggest a resource, or local maker (Knoxville area) who might be able to come up with something? Its a nice heavy blade, so might as well get some use from it. I am sure everyone is familiar with the knives, but here is a pic if you are not.
