  1. Sorry, I misread your post. But if you just want the carry class, it does not require any other prerequisite classes. We had one lady in my carry class who hardly knew where the trigger was. She passed easily. The shooting qualification part of the carry class is a joke. Mostly you get familiar with Tennessee Code and you do get a bit of safety info too. Very basic safety stuff.
  2. Thought I'd go ahead and start a thread about whether TGO should be more than a set of forums. First thing, I'm guessing that Tungsten holds the rights to the name, so it would be up to him to decide if he wanted such a group set up. Since we are already having get-togethers and talking about working to get shooting ranges reopened, it looks like we have some common interest in actually having a group. Maybe we should just be a set of loose-knit friends who do unofficial get-togethers. Maybe we might do more. Lots of questions and lots of challenges if we become more than we are now. I'll save the rest of my thoughts for comments.
  3. Agreed.
  4. I'm way across the state, so I won't be joining you, but I think TGO chapters is a good idea. But right now we are just a board and not officially a group - right? TFA hasn't been too well received over in my area. There is a Morristown chapter. One local guy tried to organize a chapter in the Tri-Cities, but gave up after a couple of meetings. I gave up on them when Harris couldn't even get a convention organized several years ago. I think a new grassroots group would be good for us. Something like the Virginia Civil Defense League.
  5. While I like both handguns, I think the SIG is a better choice for carry. I'm really surprised you can't find a carry class around Knoxville. I'd get on the phone and call of the gun shops. Might try the police department too. A lot of officers teach classes.
  6. Regrettably, I have to be a realist. The American people are pretty spineless. They are good at braggadocio but not much on staying with something until it's finished. Unfortunately, our enemies understand that.
  7. To tell you the truth, I much prefer to maintain a pistol. For some reason it annoys me to have to clean all those holes in the cylinder and barrel cleaning is a lot easier in the auto. But I'd say you are right that if you are just going to not service a handgun, a revolver is a better choice. Oil eventually evaporates and a revolver is a lot more reliable in that situation. Some of the newer lubricants like Militec-1 help on that. In the .22 pistols, there are people who never do a through cleaning - ever. Semi-auto 22s are a bit of a pain to take apart. Most of the time, I just do a quick bore snake cleaning and wipe it down good. If my life depended on it, I'd do more.
  8. I traded the Glock the same day I saw and shot the equivalent in an XD. The XD just shoots better for me. But my carry gun is a USP.
  9. If your aim is target shooting, and not a carry handgun, I'd go with the .22 LR. I have a Browning Buckmark that I really enjoy. Went in for a Ruger, but the Browning fit my hand better. Either is fine. Try them both. I use it to unwind after a "serious" practice session. It's fun and accurate and cost next to nothing to shoot.
  10. Why is it that whenever I see this topic title, I think about a blind shooter?
  11. East side - west side - all around the town? I'm in Blountville.
  12. Pretty good article. If you don't think about these things, you don't work on developing skills to combat the problems. Getting just slightly off topic: This is why I don't like tactical lights on handguns and if the gun has a laser, it should be, IMHO, one that can be quickly turned on and back off. On just long enough to take a shot. If you are in a dark enough situation to use a tac-light or laser aimer, they also provide a handy point for the bad guy to aim. Holding the light off to the side hopefully will mean even a good shooter will miss entirely or hit something less vital. Just my 2-cents.
  13. You know, this point shooting thing has been around about a century. Different "experts" have differing views on the technique. Some people are big fans and some think it's ridiculous. Guess I come down in the middle. As I've mentioned, I've tried the two-hand point shooting technique, but not the one-hand. I'll give it a try when I get back to the range. But I can't see seriously practicing it. I'm too trained on using another technique and point shooting is always going to be less accurate for about all of us. If you are one of the trick shooters using light loads, it makes a good show. Saints, thanks for actually trying it and giving us a report.
  14. www.abovetopsecret.com? Looks like the tinfoil beanies forums.
  15. You gotta have some cool shades.
  16. Hi Rabbit. Yes, very windy up here in the Tri-Cities.
  17. Nah, it's a good idea as an extra skill. I'm going to play around with it some more.
  18. Some years ago I met a young guy who was trying to find a job in my area. He lived in Charlotte, but during his wedding, a couple of guys came in off the street and robbed the wedding guests. If I'm in church, I'll have a gun. I don't carry at home unless I just happen to have the handgun on during a work day. But it's always fairly handy.
  19. I think I'm going to file the sights off of all my handguns and just point at what I want to shoot.
  20. Have some fun for me. And someone take some pictures to post. I want to know who the armed guys are in the area so I'll know not to try to rob you.
  21. ReefBlueCoupe, you too? Seriously, I think the badges are silly and a good way to either get into trouble or at least get laughed at. And if you have a gun out on the "perp" you are holding when the real LE folks arrive, badge or not, you will have a few guns pointed in your direction.
  22. We've got to get a popcorn emoticon.
