"In seeking instructors, first you must Trust, But Verify. If your instructor makes claims -- verify them. Somedays it seems like every new instructor I see advertisements for has a personal cemetery larger than the whole of Arlington." Good article on the civil aspects of picking a firearms trainer. Echos what I've been saying about checking out the background of trainers but from a little different angle. as he says: "Trust me. You do not want the jury to hear all about the dozens of deadly shoot-outs your instructor was in, just before a civil rights lawyer dramatically proves that he's a liar. To the jury, you just turned into a Rambo wannabe -- and only a majority of them have to feel this way."

I'd like a good 22 as well. But I don't care if I load one round at a time. That's what I grew up shooting. That will be a good project for the week.

Have to watch the surrounding states on bank carry. I know it is banned in North Carolina, but Tennessee is OK. My wife and I ended up being out at lunch today, so we ate in a nice restaurant. I think they serve beer, although I didn't see any signs about it or anyone drinking anything alcoholic. My gun was concealed on me. While I do have a super-identity card, I'm not technically law enforcement. I'm carrying anyway. We had a couple of cars get broken into in the Tri-Cities at restaurants a couple of nights ago. The public is safer with the guns on the patrons.

My GP for years was also a heart specialist. He used to tell his heart patients that if they followed his instructions they would probably die of old age. If they didn't, they'd be dead within five years.

Jackdog, I agree with you about 90% in this hero thing. I'd say that heroism involves purposely putting yourself at risk of death to protect others. You don't have to die to be a hero, but there has to be a pretty good chance of that happening during your actions. And I'd include places and situations that are not combat. There are quite a few fireman heroes. But the term is grossly misused and degraded by mindless overuse. There are no "sports heroes". Nothing heroic about playing baseball or basketball. Nothing! They are just entertainers and maybe sometimes a role model but not heroes. Putting your life at risk competing in something like an auto race is not somehow heroic. You are doing the race for yourself, not to save others. Going that extra step by putting your life in significant risk of death to save someone else makes you a hero. I have a pretty good idea of what makes someone a hero and absolutely despise seeing the term misused.

Indeed they do.

Basically a 9mm on steroids. I've seriously considered 357 SIG as a carry round.

I particularly like the porn film music in the background.

Well thank you guys - I think. Mars - god of War. Wolf - I like hunching like a dog. No, really just my first password on Compu$erve. I had to make up something.... Comes from two things I like, wolves and Civil War history. OK...you get the wolf part - right? Mars, as in "Marse Robert" (E. Lee). Actually a nickname given to me by a friend.

If a bullet doesn't get me, I'm expecting a heart attack to do it. Long.......family history of the problem. And I'm at about the age it gets us. Just to reinforce what Jackdog said, depression is very common after a heart attack. Expect it.

Glad to hear he's doing better. Keep us informed.

I still like the 9mm for general use in military field operations, but the 45 ACP is probably a better choice in the places we now inhabit. It's a close-combat round. The enemy is using stimulants and often doesn't stop after getting hit a time or even two unless shot placement is good. Something with a bit more so-called "knockdown power" would be preferable. The 45 doesn't have the range for jungle-type distance use, which is why I like the 9mm. I'm not saying 45 ACP is a bad round. Just that it is so slow that there has to be a lot of compensation for bullet drop and by the time it gets to distant targets, much of it's advantage in mass has been eliminated by the velocity drop and it's harder to hit the target. This discussion has made me change my signature.

Well, the Virginia (and other states') laws need to be changed to where you can't get the list. This same thing has happened in other places.

That happens to Air Force people to a degree too. Really bad for them in some situations. There have been some nasty surprises on some "safe" air bases.
-
Yeah, it's legal. Public records. But the newspaper pulled the list. The author (journalist???) has supposedly gotten death threats. The paper has gotten lots of nasty mail. http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/108563

If you can pull it off...go for it.

I looked at Barrett's website. Their Basics class just shows people shooting. Their Sniper class is "exclusively for the .50 caliber sniper team" and is just that - a long range basics class. No photos of civilians running around in tacti-goofy gear. When you are as good as Barrett, you don't have to ham it up to get customers.

Dear, dear.... As I said over in another topic: It doesn't upset me to see non-military folks (men or women) shoot whatever guns they like, military or "civilian" arms. I'm all for it. I just don't want them to leave the range thinking they are magically the equivalent of 3rd Special Ops.
-
If you aim right, it permanently stops the barking. Oddly enough yesterday I was telling someone how I've never had a problem with Wolf ammo except back in the old lacquer days with .223 stuff. Maybe you need a better gun.
-
Regrettably, I'm not supposed to have any special identifying marks. Read that as tattoos. Maybe when I retire again.

Heh heh. It doesn't upset me to see non-military folks (men or women) shoot whatever guns they like, military or "civilian" arms. I'm all for it. I just don't want them to leave the range thinking they are magically the equivalent of 3rd Special Ops.

Thanks Phantom6. As it turns out, I got some info on Bob's classes today. I don't know all he does, but he teaches an NRA Personal Protection In The Home and a NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home course. As you say, he does his classes at Cherokee. For an extra $10 you can do the carry permit course at the same time as the in the home course. I hear good things about him. Contact: Bob Camponovo NRA Certified Senior Training Counselor East Tennessee Firearms Safety School 423-239-3843 or 423-956-1230 or camponov@tricon.net These are the types of class I think most people should be taking. He also does ladies only classes.

This zoning thing is up to the local counties. If the range had been started a month before, it would have been grandfathered.
