This sounds like it might be a useful class for those people who need a primer on survival. As I mentioned in another thread, survival doesn't require a lot of equipment. Glad to see that approach here. Apart from getting shot at (and shot) the only time I've really used my survival skills in an unplanned situation was on a day hike along the Blue Ridge. I won't bore you with details, but survival situations generally happen because of something simple that goes wrong. Knowing what to do will save your life.

In all honesty I keep virtually no "survival" gear in my car. I have stuff to repair the car and during the winter I keep a sub-zero sleeping bag there just in case I got caught out in a snowstorm and am too lazy to do the stuff I know I should do. There is always ammo for the handguns of course and sometimes a spare gun or two. But survival is a matter of training as well as equipment. If you know what you are doing, survival requires very little equipment. I keep a couple of GPS units in the car, one for roads and one for cross-country terrain. They provide basic mapping capabilities in case I had to hike out. Just conserve the batteries!!!! These days, a cellphone will get you out of most scrapes.

EAST Tenn. TGO members interested in a ______ get together?
Marswolf replied to a topic in Events and Gatherings
Yeah, picking the day first is probably a good idea. I haven't looked at a calendar, but lots of things like Independence Day come early in the month. So third Saturday was just an idea. BTW, you know you are in trouble if during the exam your proctologist puts both of his hands on your shoulders. -

Scioto is by no means ideal. Just one of the few places I could think of to go. As I mentioned, someone's farm would be better. I like the idea of eating first, then going to shoot. We could eat before noon and be at the shooting location at 12:30. Everyone could choose whether to do both or just eat or shoot. No reason this has to be a guy thing either. Wives and girlfriends could come too. I know my wife enjoys shooting and doesn't mind an occasional cuss word. -

I've organized a lot of groups and and tell you that any given date will be picked to death. I suggest setting up a general date, like the third Saturday in the month at 11 AM at Ryan's steakhouse in Johnson City or something like that. Then anyone who wants to can go up to Scioto or something. Maybe in time we'll get some folks who have a farm where we can shoot rather than a formal range. The location and date can be changed if necessary, but remember that when you do that to accommodate someone, you will piss off existing people who can't come on the new day. So try to pick a good day to begin with. Everyone can't come every time, but eventually people work out a schedule to let them come. -
This brings up an interesting point. Triggers feel different when you are dry firing in a store than they do on the range. Not just triggers either. I've commented on how different the P7M8 feels when actually shooting it. The first time I pulled the trigger on an XD-9 sub, it had a round in the chamber. Probably in anticipation of the discharge, I really didn't notice anything particularly different about the trigger pull than the G26 I brought with me and was used to. There is a difference, of course. Point is, you can't really judge the trigger action on a handgun in the store. You really need to get it out on a range and shoot it.

And only $249.95 each.

I thought of ETSU but didn't list it because of the restrictions. Guess it should be mentioned for those students who can use it. Seems like if something is built with taxpayer dollars then taxpayers should be allowed to use it. Same can be said for the LE ranges. There was a proposal to open those ranges to the public a couple of years ago, but LE lobbied against it. Basically it came down to it being too much trouble to them to actually provide the service for the public. The whining was enormous.

I hate to say it, but we don't have a lot of places to shoot. At least not by-the-hour places. My schedule is odd. I don't necessarily know when I when up in the morning which continent I'll be on my nightfall. So y'all just need to plan something and I'll show up if I can. If I'm in the area, I can sometimes get together through the weeks for lunch though. I'm the old guy in the military T.... Oh yeah Hyaloid. I was a member at Unaka when the change in hours occurred - just after they had collected dues for the next year. I never used my membership the next year. The problem there is fixable with security cameras.

Where is the place they do the SASS shooting? [edit] Looks like they were at TAC2, but now have their own place around Bulls Gap. http://www.greenecountyregulators.com/

Around our area we pretty much see lone assailants on downtown streets. Occasionally a couple of young guys work together for rap music money. Most of those attacks end with no shots fired either because there is no gun to fire, or the thugs run. You have to be aware of the area you are in. I wouldn't go in a gang area with just one magazine of 380 Auto. But My 40 USP with spare four magazines isn't necessary for a trip to the grocery store either. You have to use some common sense.

I started another topic about shooting in the Tri-Cities at http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8044#post8044. Hopefully it will expand to a general where to shoot topic for the area.

In another topic there has been some discussion of various places in the Tri-Cities area to shoot. I though it would be a good idea to start an ongoing topic for the discussion. Maybe we can add additional places, geographic coordinates, good driving directions, costs, etc. Gun Clubs: Kettlefoot: Near Bristol, Take Virginia exit 1 on I-81 toward Webber City. I was a member there 15 years ago. A bit out of the way, waiting lists to get in - unless you know someone. Most political of the local gun clubs, IMHO. Access requires getting out of your car and unlocking a chain. One lane road off of the highway. Hope you don't meet someone coming the other way. Cherokee Rod & Gun: Bays Mountain area near Kingsport. Nice club, with a few problems, like the clubhouse is downrange. Good women's programs. Open pretty much when you want it to be. Access by key-card. My choice of the local clubs. Unaka: Near the Johnson City landfill. Formerly a great club when it was open about all hours. These days the shooting schedule is so limited that I can't recommend it. It's fixable, but they won't fix it. Rifles to 200 yards only. Wildlife Management Areas: North Cherokee WMA - Fee required, daylight hours only. $2 daily fee Jacobs Creek - Denton Valley Road, Sullivan Co: Half way up Holston Mountain off of US-421 out of Bristol. Almost always muddy but I like it anyway. Wear your galoshes. Scioto - Scioto Road, Unicoi Co.: Take the Unicoi Exit on I-26 (don't know what the new exit number is) then go up the mountain. Nicely graveled and laid out range. I like it too. I know there are some places around Greeneville, but I've never shot there.

Thank you Tracy. You saved me some typing. As a practical matter, it probably isn't an issue. It is unlikely an establishment will serve beer and not serve malt liquors, but technically it does matter.

Let me throw in my welcome too. The Beretta is a great (in the real sense of that term) handgun.

What they are saying is that they deeply regret that their liberal anti-American news rag got called on the carpet by it's revenue base. They will try to be more clever next time to hide their propaganda in the guise of a news column.

Well, that's it. Most of these confrontations only last one to three shots depending on the threat and your training. I'll bet that most packers don't carry a spare magazine or equivalent so reloading isn't an issue for them. Few people envision themselves shooting their way out of a street gang attack. More likely they will have one or two assailants in the Wal-mart parking lot. While I disagree with Tune about this, for most people a revolver is enough to get them out of the bad situation they are in.

SB1597 Bredesen supports "Emergency Gun Confiscations"
Marswolf replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Some politicians are smart enough to read the voter's views and follow them. What I'm looking to see is if Bredesen is smart enough to support the bill in the House. If he doesn't, I don't think his ploy will be misunderstood by the voters. -
SB1597 Bredesen supports "Emergency Gun Confiscations"
Marswolf replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I think there is a real opening here for the Republicans to paint Democrats as gun grabbers. I think Bredesen made a political mistake on this one. Lots of people who are not "gun nuts" know what happened in NO and feel strongly that the gun collection by government was wrong. This is a matter that if played properly could influence voters choices. I'd forget Naifeh himself and concentrate on putting a different party in control of the House, who would remove Naifeh from his position of power. -
I'm also curious why you chose SOB carry.

It's mixed in with the gun laws in TCA 39-17-1301 through 39-17-1361 since it's a weapon. No switch blades, 4" blade max. There is a summary on packing.org, but I recommend you read TCA.

Oh, I think its great that he did it. I just can't advise someone to do it.

Oh, OK. I didn't realize no one had called when the alarm went off. I added that 15 minutes into the 10. Average response time to a 911 call in this country is 30 minutes.
-
OK, I'm confused. The cat set off the alarm, but it looked like there had been a break in? It really would have been better to have waited. If you neighbor didn't have a gun and someone had been in the house he was a serious liability. He probably would be one if he had a gun. On one occasion I had to do a house clearing without backup. Not very pleasant. Fortunately the home was empty. A couple of points here. First, no matter how much you like your neighbor, or your own possessions at your house, you don't provoke a confrontation with a BG if you don't have to. Second, it took the normal 30 minutes or so for the cops to get there. You had better have a way to protect yourself during the waiting time if there is a threat to you or your family.

Len, the spam post was in our super-secret staff area. But to fill everyone in, I despise people who come on a board just to advertise their product or service.
