  1. Yup, I have one of the Stearns PVC rain suits, as well as various assorted poncho types & assorted emergency blankets. When I redid my packs this last time, I went soley with the thick, long Neese PVC ponchos simply because they were a bit more versitle.
  2. I have a pair of Gamo Shadow 1000's, great rifles but the triggers take a lot of breaking in before they smooth out. Power & accuracy are both outstanding, the Shadow models are very nice & lightweight which is handy for toting around all day, they however are LOUD with light & medium weight pellets, so I need to use heavy pellets to keep them from going super-sonic.
  3. What is the intended purpose of the rifle? Just punching paper or is it going to be used for hunting? For target shooting magnification & clarity at high magnification is key, for hunting you'll want less magnification, a wider field of view & more light gathering ability & illuminated recticles are what you'll want.
  4. "Americans have too many freedoms, what they need is more tyranny" - Jim Carey That's basically what that asshat tweeted.
  5. Yea I had always heard that TN was very firearm friendly, so I was a little disappointed after moving here & researching all of the various statutes, & found them to be much more restrictive than Indiana on quite a few things. Like signs, those don't carry penalty in Indiana, knives, clubs, etc no restriction w/regards to "going armed" or blade length, long guns no permit required for carry/vehicle, can be loaded, no lifetime carry permits in TN, etc. TN is still a great place to live, but some of the laws down here are going to take some getting used too.
  6. Agreed, unfortunately conservatives ... true conservatives are a rare breed these days, unelectable on a national level because things like actually believing in freedom & the Constitution is considered "extremist" by a large portion of our populace. We are in serious trouble, of that I have no doubt.
  7. I wonder what George Washington & Thomas Jefferson would think of this treaty & the *cough* Americans *cough* pushing for our government to sign it, essentially "backdooring" the 2nd Amendment ... I am guessing they'd be really, really pissed off.
  8. Nope, West TN is where they should relocate, plenty of flat country for long distance test shooting, which I of course would volunteer my expertise, in furthernce of Colt's product development. Win-win for everyone!
  9. A heavy/thick rain poncho is more handy IMHO, because it not only can be used to keep dry, it can also be used to trap bodyheat like an emergency blanket.
  10. I like the Marlin's better than the Winchesters, well post-64's anyway. Rossi's are another lever-gun manufacturer that I am starting to warm up to, fit & finish could be better on them but they seem to shoot pretty decently.
  11. That is a great tip Teaspoon! I am going to go do that as soon as I finish typing this post! Anyway fatwood is good stuff, I use it all the time to get fires going, also the "duralog" type pitch stuff is also really good, but you want to keep the chunks of that sealed up really good or it'll get tar/pitch on the rest of your gear in your pack. Wax &/or vasoline coated cotton balls or drier lint also works pretty good, but I like fatwood/duralog stuff better, especially if the weather is really bad. Sterno I haven't used in years but I was watching a movie earlier tonight (Screamers) & a couple of soldiers in the flick used several cans of sterno together to make a fire large enough to keep warm with, I guess because there was no other "burnable" stuff around for them to make an actual campfire with, but I thought would be a great backup if you can spare the extra weight/space in a pack. I also use a small Swiss/Swedish military surplus 91% alcohol fueled jet stove kit that I use a lot while backpacking, oddly enough it is a serious pain in the butt to get going if it is really cold though, not sure why, but for "survival" purposes it would come in very handy though, a quart sized bottle of 91% alcohol lasts about a week on the trail. On the other hand I also have a much larger "2-burner" white gas Coleman campstove, it is great for truck camping but I ain't going to be draggging it or a bigassed can of fuel for it around in a backpack, at least not for very long/far, much more food can be cooked on it much more quickly than with the small alcohol stove though.
  12. Very cool, the only "volcanic pistols" I have ever seen have either been in museums or video games (Red Dead Redemption, Call of Juarez) never seen a reproduction of one! Can I has it? Purty preeze?
  13. For CQB it's really hard to beat the effectiveness of 00 buckshot.
  14. the man was owed a pound of flesh & he collected, case closed IMHO.
  15. Just make sure that they are insured & kick back, relax & enjoy displaying them in a good looking case. I wouldn't put any high dollar or family heirloom firearms in it just to be on the cautious side, but I see no reason not to display a few easily replaceable firearms in a case like that.
  16. Yup WTSP was using mini's up until this last year, I believe they are planning on buying AR's to replace them but haven't gotten around to it yet. In the mean time they are essentually "rifle-less" since they retired their mini's before getting the AR's to replace them, brilliant planning on their part, guess whomever made that decision didn't realize that the shotguns that are still in service out there simply doesn't have the reach that a rifle does.
  17. Graf & Son's are a good group of folks, I'm sure they'll set it right, if not let us know & we can do an email campaign until they do. Ammunition is scarce across the board at the moment though so it might take them awhile to get a new batch to you.
  18. Where is the incentive to participate in this project? Essentially it boils down to ... show me enough cash money & I'll show you some of my firearms. We ain't talking about "breakfast at IHOP" money either, we are talking "a new Eotech XPS2" or forget about it money.
  19. I like Mini-14's, but AR-15's are one whole teen better (Yuk yuk).
  20. I wonder how much she'd like it if we all demanded that her 1st Amendment Rights be limited? Ok I get it, she doesn't like guns & wishes no-one but the military & police had them, well that's just tuff shit lady, this is Merika! She is free to go live in Europe or Cuba or hell or anywhere else where the people are prohibited from owning private firearms but leave me, my family, my friends, my fellow countrymen, my firearms & my Constitution the !@#$ alone!
  21. It's stuff like this that makes me want to live out in the wilderness, as far away from other people as possible. I pray that the mom is able to come to grips with her loss & doesn't commit suicide or spend the rest of her life drugged up or in a deep depression or something like that, I am not sure how well I would be able to deal with that sort of traumatic event. *sigh* wtf is wrong with people these days?
  22. There are "iron sights" & then there are "iron sights" basically what I am saying is that there are huge differences inbetween one type of irons vs another. You're not going to get great groups from notch & post type sights but on the other side of the coin you're not going to get great target aquisition speed out of itty-bitty peer through dual through-peepers either. It's sort of a balancing act, take for example with A2 standard service rifle sights which I find to be a very good "middle ground" w/regards to iron sight types, I am both quick & relatively accurate out to the 300m mark, beyond that my target aquisition speed slows down considerably & I really have to concentrate on my fundamentals to repeatedly put rounds on target. But when I say putting rounds on target I am not refering to shooting tight groups, if I want to really tight shoot groups with iron sights I will switch over to "ring within ring" type iron sights, with very small diameter diopters (sights with both front & rear peep holes), however doing so slows down my target aquisition speed quite considerably but the trade off is that I am able to group the rounds on distant or smaller targets much more accureately & consistantly. So to answer your question ... "it depends on the irons" essentially what I am trying to say is that with all other factors being equal, same rifle, same load, same weather conditions, same distance, same shooting position, etc, I can typically shoot 3" groups @ 300m with diopter sights, those open up to twice that size using standard issue rear apeture front post A2 sights (6" groups @ 300m), and around twice that again if I am using post & notch type sights (12" @ 300m). The reverse is true with regards to speed of target aquisition which is also a serious factor though, so keep that in mind when choosing the proper iron sights for your intended application. Granted these are just examples of rough averages, some days I shoot better/worse, quicker/slower than others, some notch/post, apeture/diopeter sights are better than others, etc, but I hope that the above ramblings helped illustrate the differences in some of the various sight types.
  23. I use crank-powered rechargers, they are much quicker than solar ones & can recharge batteries even on cloudy/overcast days &/or at night.
  24. Just a heads up, you have to coat the entire match in wax for it to be water resistant, not just the head of the match, otherwise the water will soak through the wood & into the match head. But yea Bic lighters, matches, magnifying glass, flint/steel, two sticks, whatever you have handy make sure to have duplicates or multiples & make sure to practice starting fires under less than ideal conditions just so you get the learning curve out of the way before it actually becomes "life or death" so to speak.
  25. Yea but "served who?" Is the real question, a lot of his fellow service members swear he was in the service of the opposition, seems like he still maybe serving interests other than protecting & upholding the Constitution of the United States of America...
