1. Going to see it today!  My oldest and her boyfriend went to the midnight showing Thursday night... or was it Friday morning... :)
2. When I carry my 1911, it's cocked and locked, with a round in the chamber.  But honestly, I hardly ever carry it. It's too dang heavy.  I carry a .38 Colt Revolver.  No safety to worry about.  Just point and shoot! :)    BTW, the Israelis teach a method where the chamber is empty and the slide is racked on the draw.  If practiced, it's honestly not much slower than drawing a condition 1 pistol. But like any method, one has to practice to be proficient.
3. Well, I had the "Ape" gun, but I changed the stock out for one of those ATI's.  I really didn't want to get rid of it, but we needed some money, so I sold it.  As always, I regret selling it.  I'd take which ever I could get, though.  The TS is pretty cool looking. :)
4. Dang!  You all are making me want another one!!! Bad Forum!  Bad Forum!!! :(
5. I made mine out of coke cans. Mine is also a bit different in design. I found that a pushpin makes the perfect hole. This one boils water at room temperature in around 4 minutes. The drawback is once the fuel is in, it's in until it burns out. The design above doesn't have that problem. I like that, since you don't waste fuel. The yellow bottle of HEET (methanol) works well for these little stoves, because it burns clean. Isopropyl alcohol has water in it and smokes and will black up your cook set.
6. I had one of the "Planet of the Apes" ones and it was a good little rifle!  I regret selling it.  As long as I stuck with Hi-Point made mags it was very dependable.  Any other mag and it ran like crap.  It was also a PITA to break down and clean,  but as OS told me on several posts, who ever breaks one down? :)
7. if you're going 5.56, buy a Saiga.

The "Get Home" Gun

Here are some of my thoughts.  I think a shotgun makes a lot of sense.  I'm not looking to take out bad guys at a distance.  If there they are at a distance, then I plan on hiding.  If I get ambushed, I figure it's going to be a firefight up close and for that a shotgun seems to be the right tool. The thing about a shotgun is you are going to have to limit the amount of rounds you carry with it.  Probably no more than a reload or two.  For me that amounts to 16 rounds total.  All of it 00 buck. This is not for hunting, but for self-defense. I will also be carrying a pistol with a couple of reloads and a large fixed blade knife.   A paper map of the area makes more sense than a GPS, because I don't need batteries and it weights a lot less.  Those topographically map books are nice, but they probably only showing major roads and not every road in the county. I'm going across the county, not across the state and I can see the topography, because I'm on the ground.  You are better off to find a county/city road map.  They are getting harder and harder to find though.
9. Those old Star PD's were good pistols!
10. To each, his own.  I happen to like the caliber and I'm a fan of the 1911 platform.  I've been shooting 1911s for 30 years.  And I am quite comfortable with carrying one, when the need arises.  Capacity is nice, but it's not the be all end all.  My normal carry is a .38 Colt Agent snubbie with a couple of speed loaders. If I need more than 18 rounds, I need to be stayin' home.
11. I think the grip is a little more hand filling as well.  I hope you all took some time to check out Ragweed Forge! :) He specializes in Scandinavian blades.  They are probably some of the nicest looking, utilitarian knives made and have a long history of serving the Sami people well!
12. Veterans, it would be nice to see all your unit or combat patches from your service days, on your avatars.  I've changed my avatar to my combat patch from Desert Storm, the 20th Engr Bde (Airborne) from Ft. Bragg, NC.
13. You all should check out the Robust!   http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html   If I was you all, I'd back up and look at the whole catalog a Ragweed Forge. While worth the time you will spend there! ;)   Oh and Ragnar will ship up to 6 knives for something like $6.  At least he used too.
14. There are still plenty of 30/30s being sold and the ammo is readily available.  a 30/30 will take anything  found in Tennessee.    For the criteria that you specified, the Remington is probably the most widely available.  But if you are looking to change to a detachable mag, you probably going over your budget.    In addition to the MVP, look at the Ruger All-Aerican, Savage Arms Axis and Hog Hunter.  All already have the detachable magazine and the Hog Hunter has iron sites, a feature I think is highly important for a SHTF rifle.  Iron sites hardly ever break and don't fog up.   I have an Isaphore and it's got all the features you want, but it's no tack driver.  It usually groups around 3" or 4" inches at 100 yards.  Stay away from the Spanish 1916 Mausers and the FR-7 (both 93 actions and weaker).  Look for am FR-8 which was built on the Mauser 98 action.  Spain used an underpowered version of the 7.62x51 NATO round and they didn't need to worry about a 93 action blowing up.  .308 Win is actually produces higher pressures than 7.62x51 NATO (62,000 CUP vs 50,000 CUP).  So it might not be prudent to shot a lot of hunting rounds from a 1916 action.  That also might be an issue with the Isaphore as well.  The Enfield action was never known for being overly strong.
15. Congratulations on such an excellent purchase and even more congratulations on such an excellent hunt for historic truth!!!I would imagine that gun is worth even more to you, because you were the one to discover it's history!!!  Sounds like it's probably on it's way to family heirloom status!!!
16. I know.  Seems a lot of people fear these two, down in Roane County.  I think they've threatened half the population down there.
17. For those of you that are familiar with the Leon and Rocky Houston saga and have been hearing about in the Knoxville local news, he walked again... sorta!  Just heard on the news that he was found Not Guilty, but he before he left the court room, he was charged with threatening his former lawyer on the phone and placed back into custody again.   http://www.local8now.com/home/headlines/BREAKING-Leon-House-230889871.html   I felt for sure he was off to the "Big House" this time!   For those of you not familiar with the whole mess, here is an article from a couple of days ago.   http://www.wbir.com/story/news/local/kingston-harriman-roane/2013/11/04/federal-trial-for-leon-houston-starts-monday/3431421/
18. Beyond the obvious, what is going to affect all of us is 17 million NEW patients and the exact same amount of Doctors as last year in the system.  Good lucking getting a quick appointment to see your Doctor.  He or she is going to be booked up 6 month or longer.  I figure we're all going to be going to health clinics and seeing Nurse Practitioners and PA's.  Then if it's something really serious, you will be given an appointment to see a real Doctor, sometime in the next 6 months to a year.
19. I dare say you are right, OS!
20. They just reported that the gunman is a 23 year old man, that had anti-government sentiments.  A former Assistant Director of the FBI that CNN was interviewing just told the interviewer, that if anyone had a relative or friend that espoused anti-government views and was buying firearms, that they should turn that person in to the proper law enforcement authorities.I figure that covers a lot of people here!!!     They have issued two search warrants for two locations, one for LA and the other in New Jersey.
21. You might get a complete rifle!  Who knows!!!   Actually, I'm sorry you had to fire anyone. That's always tough.
22. Watching CNN's coverage on this.  The Feds are saying that the shooter is not currently, nor has he ever been a TSA officer.  They are also showing a picture, at a distance, of what appears to be an AR laying on the ground with a 30 round magazine lying next to it.  I can't be totally sure it's an AR, but that's what it looks like. They are saying he had three loaded magazines on him when he was taken down.  Actually, they called them clips, but we all know most of the media is a bunch of DAs when it comes to firearms.
23. I think those are the ultimate firearms!!!
24. You should have been in the mil surp market 20 or 30 years ago.  U.S. Mil surps like the M1 Carbine were much cheaper and plentiful.  Now they command premium price when you can find them.  CMP currently has Springfield M1 Garands in fair condition for $625 plus $25 S&H with a 120 day wait.  That's a good price. Otherwise, you have to pay $1000 for one.  CMP is currently accepting bids for M1 Carbines (Marked Bavarian Police and mix and match).  I have no clue what they usually sell for at auction.  Honestly, the only game in town are the Com Block weapons.  There are some Mausers and some Swiss Ks out there as well, but they are getting rare and are starting to command higher prices.
25. Anyone think the prepper had enough water to last 2 months with only 250 gallons? That was for a family of 4.
