SImple Green and dishwashers are a real good way to strip it. I'd probably wipe it down with some mineral spirits first to see how it looks.

The KCI mags are Korean made and very highly regarded, at least the 15 rounders are from what I hear. The Koreans know a thing or two about M1 Carbines. Regardless, it’s still not the same as having a USGI mag, which every carbine deserves. It’s just part of the fascinating history of those little rifles.

Good price? $1k is bargain basement for USGI these days. It all depends on the manufacturer, condition, etc., etc. There are several post-war manufacturers. Plainfield, Iver Johnson, a brand new company called Inland (no relation whatsoever to the Inland division of General Motors from WWII) that is making brand new ones now. Some of them are crap, some are decent. Those made between 1942-1945 for the US military are unquestionably the best.

They could at least include one brand new Korean KCI mag. They’re $12 retail and I haven’t heard a bad thing about them.

Very late in the war, like 1945 right before production ceased. The Type 2 rear sight is the milled adjustable sight, Type 3 is the stamped version. The Type 3 barrel band includes the bayonet lug. It was standard practice for all M1 Carbines to be upgraded with these features after the war. That is why one should always question the “authenticity” of one with flip sights and no bayonet lug. Finding a true original is very rare. Your Inland shipped with the Type 1 flip sight and Type 1 or 2, probably 1, barrel band. That’s pretty much from memory cause I don’t feel like dragging the books out.

From what I hear none or very few have flip sights. If you select the different grades then different pics appear. Looks like Fine grade gets you one without bayonet lug, fair/good has one. It does make me wonder how they gots pics of the manufacturer’s stamp. No way they could take pics like that with an adjustable sight installed.

I’ll be keeping up with this as I definitely need new gutters and guards of some type to keep out the catkins, helicopters, and leaves. Tired of climbing up on the roof twice a year. @Erik88, have you considered going to a gun show to see what they have to offer? There used to always be a couple of gutter guard peddlers there.

There are no shortage of tales on the Internet of USPS Memphis/Southhaven issues. Based on how the post office is run and the general work ethic there, it’s the perfect storm of inefficiency.

@JustEd If preservation is all that he wants tell him to go to Woodcraft down there and get some Renaissance Wax. It is also available online from a couple of places including MidwayUSA. Not cheap but is widely used by collectors. It’s used in museums and was in fact developed by the British Museum. if it were me, I’d figure out how to get the stock off and give the undercarriage a good inspection, cleanup, and waxing. Put it back together and do the outside. It’s going to be hard to find a gunsmith capable of properly caring for old rifles such as this in one specific area, IMHO. Maybe he’ll get lucky, It sure looks like someone’s been taking care of it all these years. What have they been doing?
