The XDM 40 is excellent. It's a service size pistol, and the handle seems kinda long to me...but it does have interchangeable backstraps to better fit the grip to your hand. I didn't get mine for EDC...it's for home defense duty and range fun...very accurate. It is the pinnacle of polymer handgun design.

You can use .223 in a 5.56 but NOT 5.56 in a .223. 5.56 is loaded to a much higher pressure than .223. I don't know much about the S&W's. What does the receiver and/or manual say?
