What is your 308 168g SMK Long Range Accurate Reload?Help
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Yes it says drop off 1.5 g from max with Nato brass, which I did. Their max was 45.4 g, my max load was 44.0g of IMR 4895, but I also got same pressure signs at 43.3g. I'm going to try a load at 43.0g which should be close to 2650 fps. -
I've seen alot of reviews and the specs look good. They have the same scope with FFP recticle, but about $200 more. Let us know how you like it. I've seen it on sale at Optics Planet, but my budget is lower.

I have been working up a load for M&P10 using onced fired LC 11 full length resized brass with 168g SMK bullets. 4-5 rounds out of 16 did not chamber completely and when pulled trigger, hammer would fall but no bang. I had to use wooden handle to push against charging handle to extract shell. These cases had no primer intention. I marked rounds to check dimensions if someone could give me and idea besides COA and brass length to check. I don't havea 308 cartridge case gage. Previous reloads chambered and fired and also new factory ammunition chambered and fired okay. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem. Thanks

What is your 308 168g SMK Long Range Accurate Reload?Help
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I tried upping IMR4895 powder load to increase velocity. I used IMR4895, WLR primers, LC 11 brass, 168g SMKHP bullet, COL 2.80. I shot 3 rds of each load thru chronograph at 12' from muzzle. Load AVG. Velocity Range primer appearance 41.3g 2494 fps 28 okay 42.3g 2585 fps 40 okay 43.3g 2682 fps 86 2 out of 3 black protrusion (see photo) okay 2640 fps 44.0g 2691 fps 22 2 out of 3 black protrusion See Photo) okay 2682 fps left 2726 fps, center 2682 fps, right 2640 fps left 2704 fps, center 2688 fps, right 2682 fps The black protrusion in primers, I assume is high pressure signs. The load data sheet from Hodgdon shows low of 41g for 2447 fps and max of 45.4c for 2758 fps in a 24" barrel, 1;12" twist. I assume the LC brass being thicker increased the pressure. The 44.0g charge gave somewhat higher velocity with 1/4 the range in velocity, thus more consistent. I assume with this LC brass I need to keep velocity below 2650 fps. What are your opinions and have you seen this before? -
Permit Renewal by Mail in 15 Days
lshel replied to mikegideon's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I received my renewal form 2/06/14 and mailed it 2/07/14. My permit doesn't expire until June. Hope I get good turn-around and don't go on bottom of pile. -
What is your 308 168g SMK Long Range Accurate Reload?Help
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I went to 41.3 g of IMR4895 with 168g SMKHPBT and Win LR primers ( app.2470 fps) and had .8 MOA at 100 yds with FNAR308 20" barrel. I have changed to S&W M&P10 and get sub MOA at 100 yds with this load in 18" barrel. I now have chronograph and can check velocity of original load in 18" barrel . I'm wanting to extend range to around 300 yds, should I get muzzle velocity closer to 2600 fps for longer ranges? -
Has Anyone Used Guntec USA Free Float Handguards -308?
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
No one has experience with Guntec's ff handguards? -
What other accessories should be added or changed? I would like a better scope, this one is a refurbished Nikon Monarch 4-12x40.

Thanks Lowpower for very good information.

I want to explorer reasonably priced optics for a 308/7.62x51 out to maybe 600yds with most shooting at 100 yds. I want good quality glass and dependability for less that $400. I want to use my existing Burris QD Mount with 1" rings and keep my Troy flip-up sights. I have looked at Redfield Revolution, Vortex Diamongback and Viper , and Nikon M-308. I like the BDC recticle for hold over for the distances after zeroing at 100yds or 200yds. What do you use or your suggestions in this price range?

I keep looking at my M&P10 and wonder if a free floating handguard would be my next addition. I have researched several companies and there are different attachment methods. MI has a properitery barrel nut to replace existing and attached to it. Troy's MRF308 LP attaches to existing barrel nut as does Apex but they have a separate rail that you purchase that attaches to ff handguard.. Then Troy has a TRX308 that attaches to their barrel nut. JP Enterprises has their barrel nut and than an aluminum sleeve that is red locktite to the barrel nut they also have a separate top rail that is expensive for attaching to ff handguard.. Which of these methods gives the most secure attachment and will with stand the addition of a Harris Bi-pod. Also stay below a cost of $250? What system of attachment do you have on your AR308? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Then again do I need a free float handguard? They do look good!

I added a Burris QD P.E.P.R. mount, a Nikon 4-12x40 Monarch scope, Troy flip-up rear and front sights, sling and slip-on recoil pad. I sighted in Troy sights at 100 yds and then re-attached QD scope/mount. I had to recenter scope which slid forward on rings after several rounds. Moved bullet impacts low and to left to center of target.

MI GEN2 2 PIECE FLOATING HANDGUARDS?
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Midwest said this hand guard would not work on M&P10. They suggested the SS single piece for DPMS 308. -
In searching how to install free floating handguards, the MI Gen2 2 piece seems to be easiest installation without having alot of tools and not having to remove gas block , etc. I thinking about installing a free float on my M&P10. Has anyone used this handguard on their AR 308? Is it durable and can it withstand 308 recoil, which is not bad in M&P10? Thanks for your input.

I've received e-mails from Troy Imdustries, Samson Industries and Diamondhead Industries. All have flip-up sights that will work on the M&P10 and are strong/durable. I went with the Troy regular folding front/rear sights. Their Tech said the micro folding sights would not work on the M&P10.
-
I had a double set from Black Hills Leather in Laredo, TX.

I have an e-mail to Troy Industries tech section asking their recommendation for the M&P10. Shot Show articles mention Troy Folding BUIS on the M&P 10.

I received an e-mail back from YHM this morning. They said their sights were for the AR15 only , not a 308 or AR10. They said the AR10 is a beefer gun and their AR sights would not work. I assumed sights for AR15 would work on the M&P 10. I have looked and there are not many flip-up sights specificly advertised for the AR10 308. Does anyone know of any available less than $175/set?

So MagPul hasn't produced any 7.62x51 PMAG's in over a year?
lshel replied to JohnC's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Outpost Armory at exit 89 on I24 has a shelf full of MagPul Pmag Gen M3 20 RD LR/SR mags at $19.95. I have bought 5 mags in past two weeks. -
The S&W M&P10 has a receiver Picatinny rail and a Picatinny railed gas block.I wanted to use YHM flip-up sights. The rear sight Model 9680 and front sight for gas block Picatinny rail Model 9584. They also have a front flip-up sight for a Picatinny rail. Should I order the gas railed flip-up front sight or the regular Picatinny railed front sight? Their literature is not clear and customer service has not answer my e-mail yet. Has anyone else mounted flip-up sights on their M&P10? If so what sights?

AR 10 Floating Handguard Advantages?
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I'm for more accuracy and I also like the looks of free float handguard. I'll have to shoot more rounds to see how well the M&P10 groups at 100-200 yds. -
AR 10 Floating Handguard Advantages?
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
The instructions I have read and videos I've watched show cutting off Delta ring, springs and retainer behind barrel nut. Some require removing old barrel nut and installing proprietary barrel nut. The SW M&P10 has a mid length gas tube with Picatinny rail on gas block. I assume this gas block would have to be replaced with a low profile gas block to use a longer length floating handguard or would you use a mid length floating handguard to end prior to current gas block? Does these additional parts cost justify the improvement in accuracy and having more rails on handguard? -
I'm a new owner of a SW M&P10 and I'm looking at what I might need to install. I have ordered YHM flip-up sights and also a Burris P.R.E.P. quick release mount. I've seen AR's with floating handguards, but to install you need to cut off parts, etc. Is the floating handguard that much of an advantage, I know they look kool. Those that have installed one, what do you think? thanks

Which Quick Detach Scope Mount for AR 308?
lshel replied to lshel's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I've read some good reviews on the American Defense Recon at $159. The Burris P.E.P.R. is made in China and has bad buyer reviews on fit to their Picatinny rails and rough screw threads, etc.Any one out their have the Burris mount with good results?
