This past weekend Randy Harris (HCS) put on his Red Dot Pistol Skills class at Windrock Shooting Range in Oliver Springs. I attended along with 7 other students. I took a similar class in March from Aaron Cowan (Sage Dynamics) in Pikeville and had taken another 3 years ago with Randy instructing a Suarez International course as well as having a few years experience shooting red dot equipped pistols. The technology continues to evolve/improve as do the methods to better use the RDS on pistols. The early adopters like Harris and Cowan have not only helped prove the concept but are also constantly improving the methods for use and teaching of the RDS pistol. Randy is a known quantity to me. I have trained with him before and already knew him to be an excellent instructor. The Harris Combative Strategies RDPS (Randy's curriculum) is a big improvement over the course from 3 years ago. The best description of the class I can give would be "a wide presentation of information about the RDS and it's best use coupled with a precise boiling down of critical skills and drills to teach those skills". In other words, everything you need and nothing you don't. Skills covered included: Basics marksmanship skills (independent of RDS) Quickly picking up the dot upon presentation Fast and effective use of the RDS at ANY distance, near or far (including alternate sighting methods) Learning proper use of the dot (zero distances and hold overs at ranges near and far) Using the RDS to diagnose shooter mistakes/weaknesses in fundamentals // as a self learning tool These were just some, not all, of the skills covered in the class, not to mention the history/evolution of the RDS and it's use. The HCS RDPS class was outstanding and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to quickly and effectively use an RDS pistol.

I'm not a "knife guy", I own them for utility purposes. Having said that, this was a great one day training opportunity for guys like me or for "knife guys". I know I need to learn enough to keep someone from using my ignorance against me and that is exactly what I got from the training day. Most of the day was spent on techniques to keep from being turned into a pin cushion and escape/evade a "problem". Randy {Harris} also showed the students different types of knives, how to carry them, and how to use them for defense. In spite of the fact that I don't carry one to use is this context, this part of the day helped me better understand how to defend against them. In other words, another example of a well rounded presentation from Randy covering different aspects of the topic at hand. If you want to learn enough to use for self-defense or if you intend to delve deeper into the subject of knives, this is an excellent place to start.

Got one, Bill! Been using it a couple of weeks. I'm with you, I think these are great. Low to bore axis, co-witness with stock iron sights, easy to mount, work with the shooter's pre-existing mechanics... What's not to love? Btw: got mine from Camera Land NY. Good folks, quick shipping.

I can't add much to what Randy said except to say that this was a whole different "animal". You have to experience it, to really understand it. The instruction/coaching was on target (see what I did there?) without being too much (what you need but nothing you don't). I highly recommend it. It pushes the student and gives one "perspective". -
Thanks. I've been watching Midway but they also show out of stock. Think I'll just wait, not worth fooling with folks I don't know about.

Where did you find the DP Micro?

Randy Harris (Harris Combatives // "Cruel Hand Luke" on TGO) put on his Surgical Pistol Skills class over the weekend (Sat and Sun) at Windrock Shooting Range in Oliver Springs, TN. I took the class along w/ 9 other local (to Oliver Springs) shooters. The purpose of the class is to help shooters improve their precision and all around shooting skills at the appropriate speed based on size of target/range to target. We started Sat morning w/ some history and background of defensive handgun shooting/training as well as shooting technique. We then moved to live fire drills. The drills tested the shooter and also reinforced the techniques, becoming progressively more difficult over the two days. This included very small targets at close range, medium sized (8x10 ish) targets at long range, and various sized targets AT SPEED w/ both hands, dominant hand, and non-dominant hand. A wide variety of targets were used, including steel. Randy also addressed other topics relevant to defensive use of the pistol, including proper mindset. Shooters were "tested" for a baseline on day one and again near the end of the class. All showed improvement and several commented on specific techniques Randy taught/showed them which helped them solve individual "problems" they were having w/ their shooting. Throughout, Randy was responsive to each student, addressing their individual "problems" in addition to the material included the the course. We finished up Sun afternoon w/ some one-on-one competitive shooting. Nothing better than learning and having fun at the same time! Overall, this was an excellent class and a good value for the money. In spite of long days on the range, there were no complaints from students... which is usually indicative of the students being fully engaged and interested.

Anybody shoot Windrock Shooting Range?
GhostDog replied to Dirtshooter's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I shoot it every month. It's lots of fun and a little different (can't make up misses) so you have to slow down enough to hit the first time. You should try it out. There's no pre-registration on practiscore so show up at 08:30 on Saturday to register. Match is usually over by noon. Windrock is also a great place to shoot in general. Eric (the owner) is a great guy; friendly and helpful. Try it out, you'll be glad you did. -
