I understand that the driver has an obligation to show identification for the privilege of driving, but as a passenger, wouldn't a verbal identification be sufficient? As long as no other criminal activity is suspected, why would a passenger be obligated to produce a driver's license?

Got my permit last week, btw. I did call and pester them, and it seemed to move things along. IIRC, others have gotten similar results by calling repeatedly.

These look like some pretty decent, inexpensive lights. Any comparisons to Surefire or Streamlight in general?

I applied for my carry permit in June, and received a letter this weekend that said: "We are in receipt of your application for a handgun carry permit. However, your application did not properly update on our system. Therefore, we are requesting that you forward a copy of your application to this office at the above address." WTF? I guess I have no choice to resubmit, but does anyone have any experience with this response? Will my application be expedited or will it be the same several month wait from the time of the resubmission? I'll fax my app and call the number tomorrow and post an update here. Major FAIL for TDOS, as far as I'm concerned.

Going to my first race at Bristol....anything I need to know?

Aside from the hired help (Pit Girls), that wasn't my experience. Maybe Bristol draws a different crowd than Lebanon though..... -
Going to my first race at Bristol....anything I need to know?
mdlave replied to BimmerFreak's topic in General Chat
No idea about Bristol, but I was in the luxury suite at the Nashville Superspeedway for the Toyota Tundra 200 race last Sunday. My buddy got several tickets from his work, so it sounds like a similar corporate perk deal. We were in a nice, air conditioned skybox, with a great view, and a couple tvs showing the broadcast of the race. The snacks were chips, peanuts, etc. and they had big coolers of free domestic beer and soda. It wasn't really the rowdy crowd you see in the stands. I'm pretty sure we were drinking more than anyone else. Oh, and the pit girls came up for picture opportunities, but my girlfriend was already a little pissed we went to a race on a weekend night, so I didn't push it... Hope this helps. -
Wait, is this the same restaurant we've been discussing? Too bad the management wasn't more open to having HCP holders patronize his establishment. It probably would've saved lives. I mean, as long as we're discussing this in hypotheticals.........

Well, technically, driving a car (without a license), fishing (without a license) and filling prescriptions (without a license) are all crimes too, just like carrying a firearm (without a license). The difference between the first three and the fourth seems to be public opinion. Although drivers and drugs have caused many deaths (I guess fishing hasn't caused that many....), they aren't usually surrounded by public hysteria. It is unfortunate that "Uh oh, we better check it out" is the standard response for so many, and that it includes the hassling of a law abiding citizen. "Mind your own business and only call us if a problem occurs or seems imminent" is the response that should have been given somewhere along the line.

I know some of ya'll will have opinions on this: I have a P229 in 40SW, and a Bar-Sto 9mm conversion barrel. Both shoot great and work flawlessly. Is it a reasonable idea to practice mostly with 9mm (mainly b/c of cost) and carry 40SW? At 3yds,7yds, and 15yds I'm equally accurate with both (Not that I'm a great shot, by any means). By switching between practice and carry, am I setting myself up for potential problems in a defensive situation? Thanks in advance...

+1 for the Bar-Sto barrels. I have a P229 in 40SW, and the Bar-Sto 9mm barrel I purchased dropped in without a hitch. Lockup was tight, and 9mm fed flawlessly. The 40SW magazines even worked fine. As always, YMMV. As for question #1, I'm curious about that too. www.ccrrefinishing.com looks good, but I have no experience with them. My slide has some holster wear, and I've considered having it refinished.

I suggest going with one of the suggestions (cell phone, leatherman, etc), and showing up to work one day with tucked in shirt, and the item prominently visible on the hip in question. Position yourself the same way as before, and bump in to him. For him, mystery solved.

I'm having a hard time believing this is real. Did Obama read about this in The Onion and think it was a good idea?

Two questions: 1. Do people actually use these for training? Not force on force stuff, as I've heard some about, but marksmanship? I know sitting in front of the tv dry firing can be a beneficial technique. Is this a step forward from that? 2. Is there a worthwhile difference between the $70-80 models you can find online and the more expensive name brand (thinking Sig 229) models?

Review of Academy of Self Protection HCP Class
mdlave replied to mdlave's topic in Training Discussions
Yeah, ASP's commitment to the shooting community and the safety of their students over making a few extra (and unsafe) dollars on this guy was evident to me. The guy was just an idiot. It didn't seem like belligerence, just idiocy (e.g. an instruction would be given on the range, and instead of leaving his gun pointed downrange and raising his hand for a clarification, he would turn around, with his gun and his eyes oriented in the same direction). Only one warning was given for this (after a great deal of instruction and precorrection), and he was asked to leave. Totally appropriate. -
I took the HCP class at ASP in Joelton this past Saturday. Our instructor was Frank Maschhoff, who I understand teaches many of the HCP classes there. I was impressed from beginning to end. He has an excellent command of the material, and proceeded through the curriculum quickly and accurately. This class met and exceeded all of my expectations. An aside- One individual in the class was acting with negligence during the classroom time and the range time. During class, he was repeatedly inattentive. During range time, he failed to take instruction and, despite reprimands, failed to follow the "Three Fundamental Rules" repeatedly. Frank and the range staff did everything in their power to assist this gentleman, but ultimately the gentleman was asked to leave. It is clear that safety is a top priority at ASP. I would absolutely recommend this class to friends or family. Hopefully, I can eventually get my girlfriend to attend.

So, how are these situations resolved without potential for a straw purchase charge?

9mm conversion for Sig P229 in 40SW
mdlave replied to mdlave's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Just a quick report. I shot the 229 this afternoon at ASP in Joelton. I shot with the stock 40SW barrel and the Bar-Sto 9mm barrel, and used the 40sw mags for both. Everything worked flawlessly (Feeding, lockup, etc). This was my first time shooting a Sig (or any DAO gun, for that matter), and I was amazed that I was getting 4-6" groups at 15yds (amateurish weaver stance) with both 40sw and 9mm. I am pretty sure with some additional time I'll be able to get 2"-3" groups at that distance. -
9mm conversion for Sig P229 in 40SW
mdlave replied to mdlave's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Thanks for all the info. I got the barrel in today (from topgunsupply) and installed it. I won't be able to get to the range until tomorrow, but it seems to fit perfectly. The lockup is tight, and the slide action is fine. When these barrels need to be adjusted, is it due to feeding issues? Everything else seems correct. -
Hate speech or free speech? What much of West bans is protected in U.S.

A more practical concern would be: Who would be in charge of identifying the danger in someone's viewpoints? I agree that with slander, libel, etc. there comes a very high standard for proof. If dealing with factual matters is so difficult for our courts, unimaginable difficulty must come with assessing the potential for harm of a public speech. I'd rather deal with a potential Farrakhan follower planning to blow up the Green Hills Mall (a very "white" area, for non-Nashvillians), than deal with a government attempting to protect me from one of his speeches. -
A continued misinterpretation (and I'm being generous to call it that) here is that anyone is suggesting that they give the officer a roadside diatribe on the Bill of Rights, start spouting off attorney connections, or instructing the officer on how to do his/her job. In all my run-ins with the law (and they have been few, thankfully), the approach of "Yes sir/No sir/ No, I wish to maintain my privacy/Am I free to go?" has been more than effective. The image of the irate motorist tearing up a ticket, screaming, and shaking a finger at the officer may be common on those traffic reality shows, but it is unlikely anyone in this discussion conducts themselves that way. So let us assume a polite approach, and limit the straw men, shall we?

No idea on the muzzle brake. I picked mine up for a very competitive price otd at a gun show. The guy also had a decent deal on some mediocre Bulgarian ammo. PM for the guys info, I'm under the impression he has a couple more. He's located in the Clarksville area. I'm sure more are available if you check out various vendors.

http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8741 I agree that a poll would have been amusing.

I support the idea of a poll for the final determination.

Affect as verb and effect as noun were covered in the original post, so I didn't include them. I think my use of effect as a verb is accurate. I don't see the correction.......
-
To further confuse things: Affect - Noun meaning emotion or emotional state Effect - Verb meaning cause or bring about We hoped the medication would effect change in his flat affect.
