I do have suppressor height sights on both my pistols that allows co-witness through the RMR. When training I will turn the RMR off and use the iron sights for a few drills each session. I'm using a Dale Fricke Archangel holster that I have modified slightly with a Dremel to make room for the RMR. Interestingly this same holster works for the Glock 17 and Glock 19 I currently have as well as the S&W M&P 357c I used to have.

I'm not entirely sure what killed this RMR. Two months ago I noticed the dot brightness changing while shooting at a local match. I do not use the auto brightness feature so I figured the battery was weak and I swapped it out. The RMR then worked perfectly as I confirmed my zero with 33 rounds and shot an additional hundred rounds or so for training. Throughout the next week I noticed I couldn't get the dot as bright as I like for daytime carry and suspected I had an issue. That weekend at the range it started to turn off between shots and then turn back on. That's when I decided to return it to Trijicon. Just to be safe though I swapped the battery again, cleaned the slide and the battery contacts and adjusted the battery spring tension. I also read a great deal about other peoples struggles with the RMR. I cleaned the mounting hardware, tried with and without a sealing plate, and even just held the RMR in my hand with a fresh battery to see if my slide surface was warped. Nothing seemed to work and finally the RMR would not turn on at all. Trijicon was very quick to give me a Return Authorization (RA) number after hearing about my troubles and it is in the mail on it's way there at this time. The email said average turn around was 2-4 weeks which I think would be very good. I also went to a local gun shop to look at new RMRs and have noticed some upgrades since mine was produced so I may look at getting one of those and turn this one into a backup. Overall I think they will be great to work with and this was a major reason I went with there product in the first place. I still carry the same Glock because the iron sights work fine, but I can shoot much better with the RMR. I chose to have my slide milled and install the RMR after shooting a friends similarly equipped Glock. The following are my reasons for having a red dot on a carry pistol. Low light shooting is faster.* One handed shooting is faster.* Weak handed shooting is faster. * If something happens to my glasses I'm still combat effective with this pistol. It has increased my accuracy in every mode of shooting. *I had to train with the RMR to become proficient with it, just like I still have to train to see my iron sights. However, the RMR gives me more flexibility and lets me take some liberties with sight alignment when shooting quickly. Most people that I've read about dismissing an RMR as better/faster/more accurate only do so after maybe shooting a buddies gun or a short range session. That is not a proper evaluation method or duration in my opinion. Even though I carry a Surefire weapon light everyday I still want the best low light/no light option and the RMR gives me that, while the iron sights provide redundancy. It was just icing on the cake that the RMR turned out to be faster and more accurate for me. I will keep ya'll posted with updates from Trijicon as they happen.

For anyone interested in a red dot for concealed carry I've carried a RMR'd Glock for many years and I finally killed it. I have it sent in to Trijicon for repair. I will keep ya'll informed of the way Trijicon handles the repair as well as if I am going to continue using a slide mounted optic for daily carry. UPDATE Round count to date after Trijicon fixed my sight - 4,394. This RMR is now mounted on my backup CCW and will likely not get many more rounds. Nearly 4,400 rounds with zero issues after Trijicon fixed it and I'm not sure how many prior to that. This RMR was on my CCW for nearly 6 years I think. It has been treated poorly and performed well, so well in fact that I bought a 3.25 MOA dot to replace it.

Concealed Carry on Military Installations - Possibly
ehull20000 replied to Omega's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Kinda getting off topic, but OCP has had a few names since being adopted. Currently it is called Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) and is unrelated to the cut and material of the uniform or equipment it is printed on such as the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) or Army Aircrew Combat Uniform (A2CU) for uniforms. The uniforms themselves receive updates periodically for different cuts, pockets and closure methods. Not many people at work believe concealed carry will be adopted, but I still remain hopeful. -
Concealed Carry on Military Installations - Possibly
ehull20000 replied to Omega's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
On a positive note the Army just reinstated the privilege to have full sleeve tattoos and the uniform policy will take place next month to allow the wear of the OCP camouflage instead of the UCP pattern while CONUS. Things are going in the right direction and I think the new SMA will continue to pursue efforts like these. -
Thanks, I'll suggest that.

I'm interested in looking at or reading about a purse that will not only conceal, but also retain a handgun for my wife. Odds are she will not conform to on body carry and I'm concerned with having a pistol in her regular purse with a young son on the way. Right now I have told her to carry my spare Glock with a full magazine, but not a round in the chamber. I have good knowledge of trigger guard style holsters and will probably end up with that type if I can't find a purse with a retention system similar to a Safariland. I"ll be searching on Google in the mean time. Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend you walk the route you intend to take so as to better familiarize yourself with the task and then develop a required equipment list. I would keep your get home bag as simple as possible in order to minimize weight and there by minimize the time impact of the trip. Essentials to me are as follows: Bag with good shoulder straps and a hip belt. Waterproof mechanism such as a trash bag if the bag itself is not waterproof. Footgear based on season, terrain covered, and weight carried. These do not have to be boots. One extra pair of socks to rotate out when the other pair has dried. Hat. Platypus for water. Water purification tablets. GORP of your own recipe equal to 4000 calories +\- based on your own needs. Headlamp if travelling off road. One set spare batteries for headlamp. Minimal first aid products in order to control blisters, monkey butt, joint inflammation, and chaffing. Small roll bathroom tissue. One pair Frogg Toggs. The expressed purpose should be to walk without delay to your residence and then recover as needed for follow on actions. Your feet may very well be in a very bad way at the end of this in addition to very serious joint stiffness/pain/swelling. I would stock your home to allow for expedient recovery.

Good job! Try a Dremel for the stippling next time. I think you will like it more.

223 Federal Fusion MSR 62gr works really well in my home defense 10.5 AR with a 1:7 twist barrel. It precludes the fragmentation concern associated with lower velocities and instead offer controlled expansion down to around 200 meters. I feel that is a very acceptable effective range for civilians in a urban/suburban setting. Without a muzzle device it is loud and there is considerable muzzle flash. With a brake it is loud and shoots great. With a can it is less loud and shoots excellent. I have no experience with a KX3 product.

Slide locks sound perfect. I looked at them at Lowes today, but didn't know anything about them. Do they mount in place of existing hardware?
-
Thanks for the tips. I bought the physical security improvements today at Lowes. Included are new locks, door barricades as well as window barricades. Mirrored window films seem like a great dual use product, has anyone here used them? The garage is my prime concern right now. What are the best ways to secure a garage door, while still having a functional door on it? Right now both garage doors are unplugged, and bolted shut. I am still interested in a home monitoring system similar to what ya'll have mentioned. Window and door sensors, motion sensors and loud alarms with a unit that will notify atleast three different phone numbers would be great. Adding CCTV and cellular video networks is also something I am looking into. So far ADT is getting the highest recommendation in my area. Any more comments are gladly appriciated.

My home got burglarized today. Just did a search for security and didn't find much. Does anybody have a recommendation on who to go to for a consultation on how to better secure my home in the Clarksville area?

Should I keep paying on my NRA EPL membership?
ehull20000 replied to ehull20000's topic in General Chat
Thank you for the insights and opinions. I will keep plugging away at my EPL. -
While at the NRA annual meeting I noticed life memberships were discounted to 500.00. I've paid 525.00 towards the 1000.00 and I'm thinking about pressing the NRA about calling it even. I could then give money to another organization, what do you think?

FYSA looked like a few cases on the shelf of fine subsonic .22lr this afternoon. This is my preferred .22 load.

Is reloading 9mm cost effective?
ehull20000 replied to ehull20000's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thank you all for your input. I will consider all the view points raised here as well as talk to some of my mentors and see which way is the best for me. -
I shot my initial pistol match in years last night and had a great time. I'm weighing the pros and cons of becoming competitive in this sport. I think I will have to increase my volume of shooting in order to do this and as such cost is a concern. One competitor mentioned that he wasn't able to reload ammo cheaper than he could buy it. Years ago it was very simple to save money by reloading in addition to getting exactly the bullet and velocity combo you were looking for. However, any gains made by reloading ammo were usually offset by shooting more of it. I find this to be an acceptable outcome. I already have nearly all the equipment needed because I do reload for 300 WSM. I would obviously need to purchase dies and the specific components for the 9mm. So, in your opinion right now today in the current climate, is it possible to reload cheaper than to buy in bulk specifically FMJ or lead nose 115-124 gr 9mm for a Glock? If the only option shakes out to be lead nose I will end up putting in an aftermarket barrel. I also understand the possibility of an ammo shortage or a component (primer/powder) shortage being something to plan against. Thank you for your time.

I have carried one gun with a thumb safety, a S&W M&P 357c. I remember vividly knocking the safety on while firing. I don't carry a gun with a thumb safety because of this. During training with the Berreta M9 we practice decock-unlock before holstering. Meaning we use the safety to decock the hammer and then place the safety off before inserting the weapon into the holster. I have engaged the safety on the M9 numerous times when releasing the slide after a magazine change. I don't carry an M9 off duty because of this. I only carry my Glock in a Kydex holster that I have tried everyway possible to cause an AD with by reholstering. It can't happen because there is not an edge that will fit inside the trigger guard. I spend time every week doing dry draw, shoot, reload, shoot, and then holster practice to mitigate the possibility of AD with a Glock. This is in addition to normal range time each week.

I have destroyed several watches in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have two G Shocks now. One stays on my plate carrier 24/7 and the other is a back up. Zero issues anymore.

Thoughts About an Emergency Food Supply
ehull20000 replied to EssOne's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Great post. I wholeheartedly agree with your recommendation to keep food that requires little if any cooking as well as water. My family keeps two weeks of food and water at all times just in case of a regional disaster such as flood, fire, tornado, disease or earthquake. Being able to leave your home proactively under safe conditions is much preferred to abandoning it reactively to outside influences. Not trying to poke anyone in the eye, but just a thought for those of you with land please understand that none of you are as strong as all of us. -
Trijicon makes a great sight called the RMR which works exceptionally well day or night. I highly recommend checking one out if possible. One major negative is the cost as the unit is In the 500 dollar range. The second major negative is it doesn't fit very well on narrow frame pistols.
