Alien gear , Galco, Crossbread, Safariland IWB
ehull20000 replied to TnShooter83's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Carry guns and holsters are subject to a surprisingly large amount of sweat. Case in point I installed a larger magazine release button last week. I already noticed rust on the screw heads. As long as you are willing to maintain a leather holster I think it is a good option. It is a compromise, but still a good option. I had a leather holster many many years ago. It was an OWB slide type. I don't use it anymore mostly because I don't have that gun anymore. After using a full kydex holster for three years now I am very happy and I would be surprised if I went back to leather. It is hard on the slide finish. -
I missed this week. Honeydo got me good! But I finished my fence so I should be able to make next week.

Gunsmiths in Nashville for threading a barrel
ehull20000 replied to shackelford's topic in Long Guns
Jeff Walle at the Greenbriar Guns and Leather shop threaded two rifle barrels for me. No issues yet. It did take longer than I expected, but a busy smith is usually a good smith in my book. -
I have a free standing wood stove downstairs and a wood fire place upstairs. 2000ish sq ft home. I can keep the upstairs at 68 with just the wood stove. That means when the power is out we do fine as long as I have enough wood collected and seasoned. Plus it smells like a BBQ joint when I burn hickory and I think that's cool. Last winter my electric bill wasn't bad specifically because of that stove.

Good thing it's an RMR, I'm sure it still works and hopefully has a character mark now.
-
Very cool. A few things to watch out for. 1) The right side screw that holds the RMR onto the pistol may interfere with the extractor plunger and spring. I don't know for sure that this will apply to yours because it appears to be an MOS model which moves the RMR higher than a milled slide and I've no first hand experience with the MOS. On my milled uppers it is an issue to watch out for. 2) Watch out for corrosion between the battery and contacts. When you swap the battery it is a good time to clean the contacts (pencil eraser) and apply a corrosion inhibitor. If this is a hunting pistol that will see use in the rain I would check this more frequently. 3) Get some suppressor height sights. They will serve as backups if your battery dies at a bad moment on a hunt. 4) Apply plenty of Loctite when you install the screws. 5) If you install a grip plug there is enough room for an allen key and battery for the RMR.

Hillary Clinton announced new gun-control measures
ehull20000 replied to The Legion's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
http://heyjackass.com This is currently my favorite website when discussing gun control proposals with people that feel the need to do something in the wake of a mass shooting. I understand the emotional response and the resulting desire to try and curb violence carried out with guns and hope that information will lead us (society) to an optimal solution for everyone involved. -
Critique my "get home" bag
ehull20000 replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I would redefine your purpose for the bag. I see a lot of good idea fairy stuff in there. If it is a get home bag you need to focus on that. If it is an always be prepared bag you are doing awesome! In my opinion you should be able to move 20 miles on foot in 5 hours over improved roads. Double that if you are going through "the woods". If it is a get home bag I suggest the following. Add a pair of hiking boots. +1 extra socks +1 TP Maybe a small bottle of bug spray. Small like 1 - 2 ounces. Get waterproof topo maps. They will cost you a few bucks, but are worth it. I would ditch the stainless cup, Nalgene and Platypus in favor of something like a Stanley Adventure 32 oz Multi-use bottle/cup. Or if you are a baller get a titanium one. I would ditch the filter and rely on tablets or bleach with boiling as a back up for water purification. I would ditch the candles or road flares in favor of chemical warmers like Hot Hands. Ever tried to control shock on the move with candles or road flares? I would ditch the fire steel and get more Bic lighters. If you are worried about redundancy pack two. If you are worried about water intrusion put the second one in a waterproof container. If you are worried about cold put it in your armpit before use. Then I would put a 9V battery and some steel wool in my pack as an alternate. Esbit cubes and stove is killer. I would ditch the poncho, tarp and bivvy in favor or a set of lightweight Frogg Toggs. I think you are well covered with chemlights, a headlamp and a spare flashlight. Good job. I would discard your entire PSK. Insect headset looks like a pain in the butt. I would ditch the para cord in favor of a spool of 40# braided fishing line. I would ditch the waxed thread. Zipties and Gorilla tape are bomber. N95 mask is a good idea. Write in the rain paper is cool. Ditch the pen. Add a pencil or two. Ditch the sharpener, use your knife. Cool knife sharpener, hard to imagine you would need to sharpen a knife after only a few hours. Ditch the entire REI bag except the compass and add a few more Cliff bars. -
I've had a slide mounted RMR on a carry gun for a few years now. I'm not nice to it, I shoot it regularly and I am pleased with it. I did have to send it back for a repair after about three years of use. Trijicon took good care of me. Leupold and Trijicon have about the same warranty. Vortex is better in that it is truly lifetime (not just 5 years) and unconditional. I have never seen a Vortex Razor mounted, but I would like to play with one.

Which flashlight is the best?
ehull20000 replied to gomer pyle's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I've had two Surefire lights. The first one I bought ten years ago and has endured duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with zero issues. Because of that as well as the great customer I've seen buddies have I bought my second Surefire light. I never have a concern about my lights working in any condition. -
Quantico Tactical says they will transfer fir 15$. Hard to beat that.
-
Glad you held your event and even better that you had zero issues. I definitely understand the people are flaky part. Hard to get things going without a dedicated group around you.

Next TGO Meet and Greet Range Day
ehull20000 replied to shotgunshooter's topic in Events and Gatherings
Sounds like a great time. I'll try to make it for the pistol shooting and the eating part. I'm putting a calendar reminder in my phone right now. -
Dolomite nailed it while I was writing my response. I tackled my pistol build by buying a stripped lower that had never been a rifle or pistol. Then I built the weapon myself and is has never been anything but a pistol.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y467/ehull2000/GreekCrisisATMLineLarissaCity_zpsuwd9oytp.jpg Cash was extremely important during the economic crisis in Greece. Standing in the line shown in the link above to use the ATM was very dangerous not to mention inconvenient. If you need to do other things with that time like take care of a child it was also extremely counterproductive. Keeping some cash on hand at all times is extremely important. https://www.ffiec.gov/katrina_lessons.htm From the above link How can we overcome difficulties in processing transactions electronically? The widespread power and telecommunications outages after Hurricane Katrina hindered electronic transaction processing. Most institutions had multiple types of back-up and timely back up of data, which assisted in recovery of applications and business resumption. In some cases, however, manual processing was required. While this may be a short-term solution, connectivity with the data processing facility is critical in order to restore and sustain routine financial services. If telecommunications cannot be recovered, transaction items must be physically transported to other processing sites. Lesson Learned - Be prepared to operate in a "cash only" environment. Why would we need more cash? Power and telecommunications outages can disrupt all electronic forms of payments, such as debit and credit card payments. Customers and employees remaining in, or evacuating from, affected areas may need unexpectedly large amounts of cash to pay for critical goods and services. In anticipation of hurricanes or other disasters with advance warning, some financial institutions developed plans for ordering larger shipments of cash prior to the expected onset. These institutions also reported the need to plan for enhanced security precautions.

Crieve Hall Home Invasion / Kidnapping
ehull20000 replied to MacGyver's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Thanks for sharing this. I talked to my wife about this and she is glad we have a rifle in the house at the ready as well as locked doors. -
That safe will be a good investment. Don't just plop it down in your garage. Install it where it isn't visible from outside and physically secure it to the ground.

Let me know when you get to Nashville. I'd love to show you what a tuned up Glock can do. I have both a 17 and a 19. I used to own a M&P. They are both very good guns. I like to customize my guns for a specific purpose such as carry and I could only do what I wanted to do with the Glock so that is what I ended up with. I am very happy with the Glock 19 and soon I'll have my wife carrying one. I guess that's about as good of an endorsement as I can give. I trust it enough to let my wife bet her life and my son's on it.
-
Best of luck to ya. I'm up in the northern end of the state so I doubt I'll make it, but I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement. Keep it up class and post a lessons learned if you do hold it.

If we can't get a Glock sub-forum maybe we can get an anti Glock customization sub-forum. A proper place for all the people that just can't understand or accept stippling, cutting, Ceracoating or otherwise making a Glock better for the owner. It would be a place of wonder and enchantment. We could have contests to find out how many times someone could ask "Why would you want to do that?" or the ever popular "You're gonna turn a $400 gun into a $200 gun." I'm all for it!

First time for Appendix Carry - Is it safe?
ehull20000 replied to Bassoneer's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I've been carrying a pistol AIWB in a Dale Fricke Archangel since 2011ish. No issues here. Driving a car, having a surgery, taking the stairs, and AIWB carry are all safe. They each have risks that need to be addressed individually. Train more and you will be GTG. -
ATS Cobra 2.5 is a nice EDC bag, but it might be too small for you. I went from a Blackhawk backpack to a Cobra 2.5 and found I can get by with a smaller bag because it is organized better.

Threading "hunting" bolt actions advice

I should add that once I add a suppressor to a rifle I almost never shoot it without.
