I shoot 53gr in my 1-7 and can hold sub moa easily. I much prefer 1-8 with a 223 wylde chamber. I just built one under 700 with a 20" Lothar Walther barrel that will outshoot all of my bolt guns. Not a big fan of 1-9 twist as that shuts the door on some of the heavier bullets (although I do love my savage 10PC with a 1-9 twist). It's very easy to piece one of these together and if you are near the tricities I would be glad to help.

I have used RL 15 with 69gr SMK in a 1/9 twist quite effectively. I have a jug of 2230 that meters like water it's great for plinking. Varget still is my go to accuracy powder for 223 and 308 -
Jewell between those choices. I recently just picked up an older Can-Jar set trigger and it is nothing short of amazing. Too bad they went under after the owner passed away, still worth looking for used though.

I just picked up a used like new vortex 6.5x20 for $300 (they have a no questions asked lifetime warranty though). Deals are out there just have to look for them. It will be going on a 308 AR10 build that is rapidly coming to an end. Now to find a deal on a Larue LT104 mount....
-
Not the best pic... It's waiting on some new glass but otherwise she is ready for duty. I can't wait to get the barrel for the .308 lol

Money well spent...

Lol I will take some tonight. It turned out to be a really decent looking rifle, much lighter than what I expected for a 20" barrel.

It's going to be pretty much impossible to find new old stock on the older sport. Used is probably the best bet, although the new ones aren't bad. Nothing at all wrong with it, just not a huge fan of 1/9 twist barrels (although for the majority of people it is a good twist rate). For the money now I would look at some of the other budget offerings from other brands or wait until your Walmart has a Wyndham, Olympic or Colt in stock (for the record our LGS here in tricities had the Wyndham for cheaper than Walmart... $750ish I think).

Almost forgot the upper was purchased from a local TGO member. Noveske n4 ($150)

A few weeks ago I posted the need for a .308 AR barrel for a precision long range build I was working on. I researched tons of different barrels from cut to button rifled. Meanwhile I was also searching for a 5.56 barrel to replace one of the few ARs I sold off during the craziness. My 5.56 build DPMS lower (used was cheap...) DPMS parts kit ($62) LMT SOPMOD stock (had it left over from previous) Mil spec buffer tube and buffer ($35 from eBay) 12" Midwest Industries quad rail ($120 from ar15. Com EE) .750 Troy gas block ($34 eBay) Rifle length gas tube (had from previous build) Lothar Walther LW 50 20" 1/8 twist stainless varmint tactical with match bolt ($382 shipped) Bolt carrier (from previous build) Nothing took longer than a week to get, stuck a scope off another rifle on it and first groupings are .4 MOA with 52gr SMK (which are far from the optimal bullet for this rifle). 21 shots fired, scope sighted in, one 8 shot sub MOA group lol and two sub .5 MOA groups... Barrel cleaned in three patches... Barrel is amazing, LW has them premade (they apparently were a special run for Smith and Wesson Performance Center). This is also very similar to the barrel they make for Larue. This is where the good deal comes in.... I love the barrel and decided its what I want for my .308, called Woody at LW and lo and behold he has them in stock 20" .308 SS varmint tactical with matched bolt.... Get this same price $369 plus shipping.... This is a great deal for someone looking for a precision rifle barrel.

That's an ingenious idea, will be using it later this week lol. One less thing on the withered note card inside my scope cap that is close to illegible. Thank you.

http://www.primalrights.com/forum/article.php?a=4789 Good write up about FFP vs SFP scopes. One thing to take away from that article is that people have used SFP for years and made the adjustments. FFP is not exactly required, it will however make it easier for a person new to long range shooting progress. The SPR line of vortex are great, they are pricey also. With a SFP scope like the MIllett you are relying on the accuracy of your turrets, which is asking a lot of a scope that isn't exactly known for its accuracy. You aren't going to know at what magnification that the mil calculation that Dolomite gave you will be accurate because on a SFP scope it will vary with magnification. This is a big reason my initial suggestion was the Bushnell 10x takes out variables.

In dusk and dawn situations that illuminated reticle isn't going to be of help when the glass doesn't let enough light in to see a shadow even. That's the difference between an expensive scope and a cheap scope. Repeat ability and low light transmission. The vortex glass is not far off my $1800 nightforce and its about $400. I have a leupold 4.5x14 mark IV and the vortex is better in low light than it. The primary arms is amazing for the price but the fun ends when the shadows come out, it is far and away the best deal in a paper punching scope, hunting yotes no..... Not enough light transmission. The vortex is a great compromise and its basically in your price point or at least a few value meals and a tank of gas away. Research the vortex viper line.

That scope really isn't comparable to the primary arms, first focal plane vs who knows on the millett. honestly I would save the coin and get the vortex 6.5x20 in mildot. The LRS are great, the TRS.... not so much....your spending a lot of money on a nice rifle and buying junk for a scope. Scope and trigger are like wheels and engine on a sports car.... Some things you don't skimp on.

The new tactical is non 5r non melonite 1/9 twist also... (I got one of them...). The new tactical also trades the troy buis for cheap magpul buis and the troy rail with a S&W branded rail made by I think UTG. Bummer all the way around.... They still shoot good just not comparable to the older barrel (eventually I change the barrels on all of mine anyways lol).

The beautiful thing about NE Tn is its proximity to SW VA and the relatives :) although in all honesty other than a few times they have had bullets its always easier to drive across town to Wideners. I will look into the BSA MRAD, I have heard of a few recoil issues with the primary arms but they were apparently handled well with customer service.
-
There are good and bad in everything I guess. For what it's worth it's a very clear scope for the price. I have looked through the primary arms and have a friend with one on a 7mm STW it has stood up on it very well and it's not exactly light recoil.... It's a lot of scope for the money. Natchez also has a LRS 6-25 Millett that's a pretty big step up from the TRS for $389 its only knock is its huge but it has 140moa adjustment. Good luck with you AAC you should love yours. Mine has been a great rifle (mine has a bell and Carlson medallist tactical with hook which is an awesome stock). Save money for a trigger the xmark pro trigger is hideous.
-
The Millett LRS scopes are pretty decent scopes (but its a different price point) the TRS is notorious for issues. I had the TRS on a 22-250 in ATACS it would have been fine if you never touched the turrets.... I sent it back to Millet and about 4 months later my son got a new scope for his airsoft rifle.
-
That millet scope runs on sell for 249 or less at Natchez shooters supply off and on. If you purchase that one pray for a good one.
-
Be aware the new sport model since January or so doesn't "sport" that fantastic 1/8 twist 5r rifled barrel but instead a 1/9 twist non 5r that may or may not be melonite coated. To me this knocks it down a few pegs and I would personally look at some other entry options or the rapidly decreasing used market.
-
Another scope worth looking at is the Primary Arms FFP 4-14 $229. If I am spending $400 then I am getting a Vortex 6.5x20. I got my Bushnell 10x when they had a $75 rebate on the tactical scopes it made it like $120ish.... That said I like it alot, and I have some pricey scopes.
-
Bushnell elite 10x is impossible to beat for the money, I have one sitting on my AAC.
-
Great rifle you are going to love it.

It's Geissele.... Darn hard name to spell.....

Geiselle. I have the SSA-E its very nice, I have the Geiselle hi speed NM trigger and its in a different league. The RRA nm is an improvement over a worked factory trigger, just not a huge difference IMO. I have a Timney on my sons AR and it falls somewhere between the RRA and the SSA-E IMO. Some things (barrels and triggers) are worth the extra coin. Defense/combat SSA-E Precision Hi speed DMR or match (mine came with all three different sets of springs)
