When I was about 18, I worked a short time at Tennessee Dressed Beef, a slaughterhouse that was (maybe still) in the Nashville area. It is quite shocking how the animals and meat are treated and handled.
I would witness the owners Grandson torture injured cattle. He would often hold 2 electrified cattle prods on the injured cattles head and face for a lengthy period of time. He would get off on watching the muscles in the face and body convulse.
He would also shove a 2"-3" high-pressure water hose into the vagina and/or rectum of the injured cattle, and proceed to turn on the water at full-power. Unbelievably disturbing, this guy was.
I don't think I saw anyone else who was willing to fight over the 20 gauge shotgun when it came time to put injured cattle out of their misery.
And this was before the cattle was rounded up to go inside the building for slaughter.
After watching the entire slaughter process, from start to finish, I couldn't help buy wonder how the meat could be safe ot eat. The cattle would be trucked in from all over the country, almost always covered in feces and urine from the long trips. They would then slosh around in holding areas also filled with feces and urine. And this is how they would enter the slaughterhouse. I did see some halfhearted attempts at rinsing them off, but even a city slicker like myself could tell that this process was hardly adequate.
But in the end, after being witness to all the grossness, I still love me some red meat. And I think those Bubba Burgers are some good shiznit. Maybe literally.
