  1. Greetings Everyone! How y'all like this heat and drought. In my location all the rain has been to the East and South of us, and the ground is dust. I've had to string 4-5 lengths of 100' garden hose to give my garden some water every week, otherwise it would have been a bad year. This year is my best garden, EVER! But with the heat it's killing this old man especially picking all those green beans. Picked, canned and froze three bushels of green beans already. Not even done with the first picking of the first row of three. The weeds in the rows of green beans have taken them over so I have to dig through all that to get to them. I got too carried away with my garden this year! Just the two of us, the wife and I, and I planted about three hundred linear yards of green beans? Have zucchini, green beans and potato's coming out our ears. I planted 16 zucchini plants because that's how many the package I ordered came to planting 5 seeds per plant. So they didn't all come in at the same time I planted 8 of em 2 weeks later. The first planting of 8 plants have produced about 100 or more zucchini, and the second planting is flowered and about to spit them out. Got so many the neighbors see us coming and are locking and not answering their doors. Tomatoes! Ahh tomatoes! The first year I moved here I planted 12 tomato plants. We had lots of tomatoes to eat everyday and enough to can some stewed tomatoes and maybe a dozen pint jars of delicious spaghetti sauce. The second year I wanted to can more tomato products, enough to get me through the winter, so I planted 24 plants. For what ever reason, really didn't produce enough to keep us in sliced tomatoes everyday? This year I planted 40 tomato plants in total. I've planted tomatoes many years during my life. My goal has always been to get my first ripe tomato by July 4th for bragging rights I suppose? That never came close to happening as they always came in ripe late July, well... Here it is June 25th, and today we accidentally found three huge ripe tomatoes deep with in the plant. At 6 A.M. a crack of light was just right shining at a small gap in the plant as I was driving my tractor by and I spied it. I've never had plants this HUGE loaded with softball sized matters Yes Virginia, we'll have canned matters this winter! I managed to keep the millions of beetles off my fruit trees this year by spraying them every few weeks and have a bumper crop of peaches. One peach tree is 50% ripe for the picking so I picked 1 bushel of them. Oh I love fresh peaches! Sure would be nice to have fresh canned peaches this winter, so I sat down and read my "Ball preservation book" and got started, no problem. Well, to make a long story short, I'm not going to be doing that again! It took me all day after I picked them to can just "six quarts"! I didn't realize how much time it takes. Had to get out my propane torch to help get that much water to boil in a hot water bath. My propane stove is not adequate enough to get that much water to boil. Then having to dip the peaches in boiling water to peel easier and making a mess all over the place. Making and keeping hot the syrup while the glass jars are boiling, keeping the lids on a separate burner hot and using the additional blow torch keeping the hot water bath boiling. To much work and confusion! Going out again at 5 A.M. and pick more green beans until the sun crests the trees and the sweat starts to flow. I learned my lesson, next year I'll use my hand tiller to keep my garden small and in check. Well, I keep telling myself that every year anyway? Hope everyone has an excellent garden this year.
  2. Yep, I would have to agree! As a 17 year full time member myself of the 102nd Army Reserve Command (ARCOM), both USAR (weekend warrior) and full time 102nd ARCOM civilian aircraft technician / crew chief, I have seen many musters for training and other activities. I have been ordered and participated in things I thought odd as a federal troop, such as those designated to the state National Guard? But times, laws and missions are changing to cope with todays changing missions. Color me soft but, it's a lot of fun flying along at 140 knots in an assault Huey UH-1C with a M-60 machine gun, mini guns and rocket pods. And they called it annual training
  3. Tell me about it... I was born and raised in Wellston & Pagedale. Still remember the ole phone number. PA 65789. It went from bad to worse to now. I remember taking street car rides from the White Mill street car hub in Wellston to the river front well before they ever imagined the Gateway Arch. I always wanted to go back and look at the old neighborhood but, I don't know enough people who own AR-15's to accompany me. If you don't mind, how about telling us the details of your horrendous experience and how you coped with it?
  4. This isn't necessarily my opinion but something to think about. Is having a handgun carry permit (HCP) a right, or a privilege? Should a guest in this country have all the rights, benefits and privilege's as a born or naturalized citizen? Just how does the government do a back ground check on a person who is a citizen of, say, the Republic of Congo?
  5. Funny you raised this topic at this time. I've been canning my little fanny off the last two weeks. I have a bumper crop of green beans, peaches and potato's I've been busy doing six quarts at a time. And my 42 tomato plants are not far behind. Good thing I'm retired. I personally use a Presto 16 quart canner and it does 6 quarts / pints at a time. It suits my needs but had I known I would be canning as much as I am currently, I'd buy a larger commercial canner, because it's a slow process and the more you can "can" at once, the better. (Notice my can can play on words?) You really don't need to take a class on canning. Everything you ever wanted to know is contained in the little book titled, "Ball Blue Book of Preserving". It's cheap and can be found almost everywhere, just do a Google search. Well, it's 4:40 A.M. and time to get ready to pick green beans before the heat makes it miserable. Good luck! P.S. If you're new to canning, make sure you don't take any short cuts to speed up the process. Every step, time and process is important to ensure food preservation and safety.
  6. I wouldn't read too much into it at this point. Those neighborhoods are ideal places for urban combat training. They resemble many urban ghetto's through out the world our Army may face. Then again, history shows the military has done stupid things in the past, such as; In the 1950's, spraying hazardous chemicals by airplane over St. Louis, MO. to simulate the effects of nuclear fall out.
  7. Will you share the recipe? A neighbor gave me a simple recipe and it didn't turn out very well. In my neck of the woods most the rain everyone else received by-passed us, so our wild blackberries are very small. In fact, the chiggers bites are bigger than the berries.
  8. May I pull just one word out of my hat? tyranny tyr·an·ny [tírrÉ™nee] (plural tyr·an·nies) noun 1. cruel use of power: cruelty and injustice in the exercising of power or authority over others 2. POLITICS oppressive government: oppressive government by one or more people who exercise absolute power cruelly and unjustly 3. POLITICS state ruled by tyrant: a country or state under the power of an oppressive ruler 4. cruel act: an act of cruelty committed by somebody with great power [14th century. Via French, from, ultimately, Greek turannos, (see TYRANT).]
  9. Same here... Once I submitted the paper work it took less than a month. With my Florida permit I still had to take the one day HCP course. Was not required to get finger printed again and the fee was the same cost as a renewal.
  10. I recently acquired a Rock River Arms AR15 and it came with a Nikon P-223, 3 x 32 BDC optic. First thing I did was take it to the range to zero the scope at 100 yards. I know the scope height above the barrel affects the point of impact but, is point of impact 8 inches higher than POA normal at 100 yards? It started at point of impact 10" high and will adjust no lower that 8" above POA. I like this AR, it reminds me of my days with my issued M-16A1 back in the day.
  11. Wow, what a coincidence. I hurt mine a couple weeks ago also trying to put a belt on my lawn tractor in an awkward position. I couldn't raise my left arm (left handed) shoulder high and had to miss my monthly IDPA match. In addition to the pain and not being able to function properly, we can't be missing any shooting activities, so... I had knee surgery back in the 90"s and didn't want to go through that again so I decided to try a chiropractor. It's not cured 100% yet but, at least most the pain is gone and I can shoot a handgun. It sure did get sore again when I shot two rounds of trap. Why they want to pop your neck and back when it's your shoulder rotator cuff beats the heck out of me. That was causing me problems I didn't have before so I told her that was the end of that nonsense. Good luck with yours.
  12. Don't sweat the minor stuff. That's a beauty and a keeper! Congrats...
  13. Funny thing happened to me this week. My feed ramp on one of my .45's is scuffed up so I thought I would drop by Lowe's and pick up some crocus cloth. I went to all the logical sections and did not find it. So, I started asking a number of employees where I could find it, a total of 8 employees. Note that they all were probably less than 40 years old if that matters. Anyway, none, and I mean no one, ever heard of crocus cloth? So... I'll stop by Wally World, surely they will have it. Looked around again in all the logical places one might find it, nope! So, I asked the first female associate I found where it would be. "Sir, I believe if you check the fabric section, you'll find it there"! I thought what the heck, might as well, who knows? I asked the lady in the fabric section, by any chance is crocus cloth located in this section. And her response, "what's crocus cloth, is it a burlap product"? I came from the St. Louis area and everyone knows what crocus cloth is. It has to be a generational or regional thing? I've been to places and met people who have never heard of BBQ pork steaks and mostaccioli. I've even been to the eastern U.S. and if you want a cold drink you ask for a bottle of POP, not a soda. I just thought this was interesting but frustrating. P.S. I ended up getting steel wool, they heard of that before
  14. May I chime in on this one? Slavery was thrown into the mix by President Lincoln to get more support for the war, and not a cause of it. While states rights and northern aggression were major issues that divided this nation, if I could pick only one word that best describes the trigger, then and NOW, it would be this. tyranny tyr·an·y One of the first acts the president declared was the suspension of habeas corpus and trial, mainly for opponents of his policies. Then involuntary servitude for the union army was initiated (the draft) unless one could legally buy his $250.00 way out. As you all know, the constitution limits the federal governments responsibilities and clearly defines its powers. If the powers are not granted to the federal government, it's states rights... Look at where we are today!
  15. The only time I ever liked Limburger cheese was in the mid 1970's, when I put a block of it on the intake manifold of a buddies van as a practical joke. Good stuff I must say. Always wanted to taste head cheese but, don't want to waste the money to find out I don't like it. Then, I seen a program on TV, what it is and how it's made. NOPE!
  16. Congrats, nice shooting to your Mrs.
  17. Hello from Henry County!
  18. I use to think that too, until I had to reset my broken clock for day light savings time
  19. I stop myself when it's safe to do so. I'll usually move them off the road 5-10 yards in the direction they are headed. I'm no expert but, I think this time of year the box turtles are traveling in search of a mate and that's why you see so many on the roads. I have not even considered checking Tennessee wildlife laws governing box turtles. If I'm a law breaker relocating a turtle from becoming road kill, and doing so in a safe manner, then the law is in conflict with common sense. BTW. I had a medium size box turtle in my driveway last month. Went inside to get a cold drink, etc. and wanted to show the wife the neat little critter. Went back outside where it was, only 10 minutes elapsed at most. Checked in a 35 yard radius and we could not find it. They must move pretty good when they want to?
  20. I live close to Camden myself and have never heard a negative comment on the training, except if you show up with anything other than a Glock. But, $450.00 for a training class is a good chunk of change. I guess it's commeasurable with other top notch training facilities.

How did my comment get in the comment box? Humm...
  22. It makes you wonder what they think of themselves when they look into a mirror?
  23. I must be cold hearted? God forbid, if that had ever occurred to my daughter, I would not have one ounce of remorse. IMO, any family member ballsy enough to sue for wrongful death is in the same morbid gene pool.
  24. You got that right! After an IDPA match I'm ready for a wheel chair.
  25. Will dialing 9-1-1 on a cell phone work when you DO NOT have cell phone provider service? Naturally I'm not going to dial it to see if it does or does not. Reason I ask: There may come a day when I may need it. I was paying almost $200.00 a month for mine, the wifes and daughters cell phones with all the bells and whistles and I very seldom used mine. The two year contract ended so I decided I didn't want to continue with that additional bill, so I canceled. BTW. It was Verizon if that makes any difference as far as 9-1-1. Thanks
