  1. Unfortunately, I believe we are well beyond getting this country back on the right track. To do so, it would require sacrifice and belt tightening on the part of less than wealthy Americans who depend on government for something. When the majority of Americans discover they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury, it's party time. The statistics I've seen show 50% of Americans pay no income tax at all. More than 50% of Americans receive some sort of government handout that includes; earned income tax credit (free money), welfare, WIC, Section 8, Aid to Dependent Children, Social Security, disability, corporate bail outs, disaster relief and buy outs, on and on and on and on... Let the good times continue to roll... Our founding fathers need to collectively roll over in their graves again and shake Washington up again.
  2. How do you older folks focus your eyes when shooting pistols? I'd really like to improve my IDPA scores and shoot more accurately during my self defense range sessions. Dropping a hundred bucks on .45 ammo and not "seeing" any results is getting old. Like most of us, when I was younger, I was a much better shot. Today I wear bi-focals and can not use them when I shoot, as they really mess with my focus. If I focus my eye sight only on the front sight, the target is blurred and distorted and difficult to distinguish center mass. The only thing I can think of is switch to a instinctive / point shooting, and focus on the target and forget the sights. That seems to do ok at close targets but, during IDPA matched many targets are roughly 15 yards out and I'm way off C.O.M. What's your preferred method that works for you? Thanks.
  3. Maybe Mr. Yeager is striving for a Hollywood career? I'd like to see him replace Vin Diesel in a new shoot everything up action "B" movie titled, "Yeagerism Returns"! When you positively absolutely have to kill every bad guy in the room, nothing less than an upside down Uzi will do Scooby Doo, where are you? Personally, I think he would make an excellent bad guy actor in action movies, don't you? Rambo, the Terminator, Braddock, Rocky, Moe, Larry and Curly all rolled up into one?
  4. Howdy and welcome to a great place.
  5. Just a little advice as you select a place to sell your silver. My first advice would be to hang on to it if you can. In these times it's financial insurance. Most people have home owners, medical, life and auto insurance, silver is your financial insurance. Unfortunately, I cashed out mine about four years ago to buy my retirement property. I tripled my investment in only a five year period. A precious metals dealer, coin shop, jewelry store, pawn shop, etc. has to make a reasonable profit dealing in the metals market to stay in business, I've found that reasonable percentage to be 7%.above or below spot price. I always went to a common real time spot price dealer like www.kitco.com and printed out the current spot price, went to my local precious metal dealer and bought or sold at a 7% difference. Prices can change dramatically from minute to minute, so when you get a quote of what your dealer will sell / buy for, and there is a substantial difference, ask to see his current price list or his current computer spot price for verification. If he becomes offended or hee haw's around, be suspicious. Hope this helps.
  6. Hi OS! Since I'm attempting to solve all the world's problems, let's try this one on? Since there really are no actual "states rights", being that the Federal government actually controls politicians and states laws, via with holding federal funds the state's population paid into federal taxes, and not distributing to the rogue state if they don't bow down to federal pressure, as in 99.9% of the cases. Would that be a blanket statement? States are only allowed to legislate laws that are palatable to federal law. That's a fact Jack! It's civilian counter part is named, black mail. Think speed limit laws, safety standards, state interstate trade, separation from the union, etc. etc. Read the U.S. Constitution, it's not a document giving power to the federal government, it's a restriction on federal power, and everything else is the people's and "states rights". Look where we are today with Federal intervention in all our lives! Therefore, as King of this now great Federal Empire, I would propose federal legislation to exempt all military, active and reserves, from age restrictions on marriage, drinking, gun ownership, CCW, HCP, car and property ownership, regardless of age. I would think our military troops would have more than demonstrated their maturity, discipline and commitment to our laws and our way of life. By virtue of their service, I submit, we would not even be discussing this topic if it were not for our armed forces. Finally, let's get real. You're a 18-19-20 year old on the battle field, you look over an see your buddy blown to bits, you are wounded also and don't know if you will live, you're in dire pain, you're scared by the sight of your former buddy laying there in pieces, blood and guts everywhere. You get first class medical attention and recover from your ordeal and return home to be treated as a second class citizen. I write this as a been there done that, and on behalf of our brave troops experiencing it now. If there is only one combat troop reading my opinion(s) and disagrees with my reasoning and what I believe, I'll shut my loud trap, promise. I don't mean to be derogatory or conflicting but, our troops deserve their earned due, not based on age. And above all, God bless our troops!
  7. No disrespect intended and your opinion counts as much as mine.. I like having a dialog of the pro's and con's, I may not be on target with my assumptions. But by implication are you suggesting combat veterans utilizing weapons far superior than what we as private citizens can own and use, not be legally allowed to exercise their Second Amendment Rights, off a military installation? I believe our troops are far better trained and have much more discipline than your average Joe CCW holder? Same goes with alcohol consumption. How many military personnel do you suppose miss morning muster due to the night before partying, compared to your average working man calling in sick that morning. What about coming home from a war, seeing things, experiencing things, and doing things most people who have never been in the military would find reprehensible and disturbing. I know first hand a little alcohol takes the edge off some of those recent memories. Counseling and debriefings are next to useless. Just some Dennis's points to ponder. I have not researched it and have no hard evidence but, I suspect 30-40% of our fighting force is under the age of twenty-one? That's based on my military career and what my military son estimates. That's probably more accurate than figures you'll receive from the GAO. While I respect everyones views and opinions, because that's one of the attributes that made this nation great in the first place, I don't believe what is good for the goose, is not good for the gander, to put it in Tennessee terms.
  8. I had the same questions when I moved here. Don't consult the Yellow Pages, ask your neighbors who they recommend. You'll find out in a hurry by their experience who you can trust and at a reasonable price. One thing about country life, people tend to stick together and help each other out and not get crapped on... JMHO and a tip from Henry County.
  9. This old fart had the unfortunate life changing experience of turning sixty (60) last Tuesday. Hell, I can barely count that high... Anyway, I thought I would run into town and buy me a 12 pack of something carbonated, tasty, 6% alcohol by content and in a blue and white 12 ounce can. My intention was to drink each and everyone of them on the back deck and sing, "Happy Birthday to Myself" So, I drive to town to the local stop & rob gas station / convenience store. I've been here so many times getting diesel, beer, soda, snacks and stuff, they know me by first name. Sure enough, the gal I've done business with many times asks, "I'll need to see your identification to purchase that". Well, I know the law and she is just doing her job but, I feel like a little harassment since it was not busy at all and I was the only one in line. And at my age you're not happy unless you're giving pretty young woman a hard time. After I presented my drivers license and she looked at it and verified I was indeed older than 21, I paid for my 12 pack of making me feel 40 again for a couple of hours after rapid consumption. I then asked, "doesn't it make you feel awkward to have to ask for identification because TN state law says your too stupid to tell an old man from a young whipper snapper"? She replied, "No, as a matter of fact, just a few minutes ago a couple fisherman came in and tried to purchase beer. It was a father and son, the father didn't have his identification on him and he appeared to be about 60 or so. The son had to purchase the beer". Mind you, I had just given the cashier my drivers license for age verification, then I asked, "how old do you think I am"? With a classic smirk and hee haw, she replied, "54 or 55 maybe" Now that's "feel good legislation I can live with" With that, I left her a five dollar tip for putting up with my B.S.
  10. Yep, been there done that! I know what you're feeling KahrMan. It doesn't really matter how old they get, you still worry about them and want the best for your kids. All part of becoming an independent adult, but that doesn't mean I like it. It was especially tough with my baby girl.
  11. Not to scare or deter anyone but... I looked into it awhile back for myself. My research found that people getting Lasik surgery had about a 2% irreversible failure rate and either became worse off vision wise or blinded by errors in the procedure. All-in-all, the odds and benefits are with you, unless you're like me and always fall into that 2% group.
  12. Wish I wasn't so far away. The best to you and your business!
  13. I'm not going to bash our military selective service system, as it has served us as a nation well for almost 240 years. I believe you could have signed up for the Confederate or Union Army legally at sixteen years of age? My opinion is, if your old enough to do a man's (or woman's) job, you're responsible enough to obtain all the rights, benefits and privileges of a full citizen. My reasoning has remained the same all my life, so I don't think my advancing dementia affects my attitude, but, how about our federal and state laws? Reason this out... At 19 years old I went through the NCO academy and became an E-5 buck Sargent (a legal minor). At that same age tens of thousands went through Officers Candidate School (OCS) and were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant butter bars, by the age of 19 (a minor). Both are military leaders responsible for tens of thousands of dollars of equipment, and more importantly, responsible and accountable for the lives, safety and well being of their subordinates in combat, garrison and on military leave. My definition of a minor is a child. Someone who is not an adult. You're one or another, not both at the same time. To me, it's logical to assume any person, organization or entity sending "a minor" into harms way, is committing child endangerment, child neglect, child abuse and taking advantage of someone that can not make experienced informed decisions on their own. See the conflict I'm presenting? In my original post I forgot to mention, I was too proud to ask "permission and signatures" to get married to my girl friend when I got back from VN. I waited until I was 21 and got married when at Ft. Campbell, KY. IMHO... Discriminating against those that provide you with piece of mind and a good nights sleep, getting up in the morning and speaking to your loved ones in ENGLISH, is not the American way. I would personally entertain the idea that anyone, regardless of age, who has a military I.D., including Reservists and National Guard, have at least the same rights and privileges as the rest of U.S. citizens. Oh yea, I wasn't allowed to cast a Missouri absentee vote from the RVN in my spare time from fighting Charlie based on my child status. Too young to even vote for my own Commander and Chief, go figure...
  14. Let me start off by saying that, when I returned home to Missouri in 1972 at twenty years old, after two years in the Army and one year as a helicopter door gunner on a gun ship, I was still considered and treated as a minor. I was not allowed to vote, buy a 1972 Pontiac Firebird I had saved for with my military pay on my own, nor could I go with my dad to the local watering hole and have a cold beer with my father. I can't tell you all the places I was allowed to consume alcohol on base, in foreign countries and surrounding military base communities. I wasn't happy then, but now I'm a little livid at our laws and system of treating our military "children". Watching a TV program the other day where a twenty year old Iraqi war veteran got pulled over by the Sheriff's deputy. He and his Army buddy were headed home and had a cold twelve pack of beer in the car. They had not been drinking and were not cited for anything other than, possession of alcohol by a minor, and given a ticket for such. I don't know about you but, that's a slap in the face and real discrimination against our troops. I know it's "state law" on these issues but, does that make it right?
  15. This will not be a popular answer and goes against the grain of rapid response if you need to employ your weapon instantly, but... For me anyway, I normally don't carry one in the chamber, y'all ought to thank me for that. No matter where I'm at or what I'm doing... Murphy is my side kick! My pants and stuff get hung up in the most unlikely places, dismounting my little farm tractor and my shorts / pants getting hung up in a control lever, my seat belt grabbing the top of my CCW getting out of the vehicle, I could go on and on. Hell, just last week, one little stick in my lawn and just walking along gets stuck in one of the loops in my shoe, and I have to untie it to remove it? Everything always gets hung up on me, go figure? I myself, with Mr. Murphy looking over my shoulder, would rather spend the extra second racking a round in a life or death situation, than Mr. Murphy presenting himself and having a ND, and paying the price. I think a quote from a Clint Eastwood film is appropriate. Son, you have to know your limitations. IMHO, with my luck even wearing the best custom made holsters as I do, I would rather be a victim than have a ND and hurt an innocent bystander. If it were not for bad luck, I would have no luck at all.
  16. I recently traded for a Ruger SP101, great gun by-the-way! Ran across a thread on how to really polish that bugger and make it shine like a brand new silver dollar. Hey, that's for me he says, not ever polishing a revolver to send mirror signals to airplanes searching for me lost in the jungle. Anyway, I spent hours and hours going through the process of sanding from 800 grit sandpaper to 1200 grit. Then hours and hours spent polishing it with Mothers wheel polish. The results were outstanding! I took it outside and focused the reflection like a magnifying glass on my dry grass and started a fire in seconds, well not really, but you get the point. Anyway, I finally got around to shooting this beast for the first time this weekend. I'm glad I only took a box of fifty .38 +P to try it out. To say, "I got a kick out of it" would be an understatement. I'm a decent shot, or at least I thought I use to be. At seven yards on my first five rounds, I grouped them all inside of a full size dinner plate? I got a little better with the stock sights further into my 50 round shoot. But here's the kicker (pun intended), when I got home to clean this little monster, the finish on the SP101 was messed up in places. I guess from the heat generated from firing it, and it looked terrible finish wise. I had to go over it again with some Mother's polish to get it looking pristine again. No amount of cleaning and wiping would remove the distortions on the stainless steel? Any thoughts?
  17. Now you guys have me interested. Anyone ate a Ferrel pig? I would assume being wild it would have a gamy taste.
  18. In 1970, in Army basic training, when issued my M-16A1, my drill instructor didn't take kindly when I asked, "do you have this in left hand"? I was serious too! Nothing like having to do a bunch of push up's for a serious inquiry. So, everything I own is right handed except for my Browning A-bolt 30-.06. So many years having to adapt and over come, it's awkward using anything left handed anymore.
  19. As sad as it is to say, we have become "subjects" to our government. I would say there are at least 50% of the American population that don't like where America is heading. They don't like government to interfere in every aspect of their lives. The 50% don't like the government as a Nanney state and squandering the wealth of our nation on foreign influence and propping up their economies. They (we) don't like social economic welfare programs providing a life long entitlement to those to lazy to work and earn a living. They (we) don't like the with holding of federal funds we paid into, to blackmail us to conform to federal programs and socialistic policies. We don't like wasting tax payer dollars on frivolous research projects, building other nations, being the check book for the world! Yet somehow we always end up picking the lesser of two WEEVILS between the only two parties that can possibly win the presidential election. Tell me the "system" is not being manipulated in favor of the established elite? I could go on and on... A one world government is closer than you think. /rant off
  20. Not to disparage Berkley, as I have one of their systems also, but... Not long ago their "black" filters were separating and failing big time. I have the white filters and they are fine. On the forums I never read if they corrected the separation problem or not. Might want to check into that.
  21. I'm going to attempt replacing the front sight with a XS Big Dot sight on my new Ruger SP101. Anyone have any experience changing it out? Looking at it, it appears it is held in with only a roll pin (1/16"?) and probably some lock tight? Would I be correct guessing I'll only need... (1) A 1/16th inch pin punch if that's the size. (2) A 1/16th inch metal drill bit if the XS Big Dot is not pre drilled. (3) Red loctite. I have blue loctite, will that suffice? Any hidden hazards I will wish I had known about before I screw it all up? Be on the look out for my next for sale ad, "Parts-O-Gun" for sale. Thanks Guys. Oh, I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for.
  22. If that were me they were writing about, the article would have read, "ex-wife". If my wife were that stupid, I wouldn't trust her with the laundry. Great outcome though!
  23. That sure is a wealth of information reported?
  24. Since we're about to talk about Memphis, barbecue and ridge runners, anyone seen any Elvis sightings lately?
