  1. Thank you very much Dave, I wasn't aware of that... I turned it on in automatic brightness mode and it did help some. It has been in a sealed Tupperware container with rice and a desiccant, and I have been checking it daily. This excessive halo I'm seeing seems to be slowly going away. It's almost like an optical allusion, with my corrective bi-focal's on it looks worse? Thanks again for your response!
  2. Thanks, I'll immediately check it out!
  3. Lately I'm having more gun related problems than Carter had liver pills. I was the Range Officer at a USPSA shooting match this weekend. I mention that because I couldn't duck and cover or conveniently and quickly protect my handgun Vortex Venom red dot optic and had to endure it. Anyway long story short. I managed to shoot the 1st stage and the optic dot was sharp and clear. It started raining cats and dogs for almost a solid two hours and me and everything on me got drenched [2-1/4 inches of rain]. Shooting the second stage I checked my red dot as usual to ensure it was still on. To my dismay, the red dot was there but, a couple hundred of other tiny little red dots were surrounding it also [a halo so to speak], covering most of the sight picture through it and it was useless. Having read the owners manual it states it is water proof, not water resistant. Given the circumstances and timing I suspect it has to be water related? Got home and took the battery cover off and didn't see any evidence of moisture inside. Took my heat gun [naturally had the heat level just lukewarm] and spent a considerable amount of time blowing it dry if there was any moisture in it; with no luck, nothing changed. I need that optic for these old eyes for the next match, so I went to order a new one and I'll send this one back for repair. I checked a lot of places and every Vortex Venom is on back order and no one has any in stock. With this virus going on, I have things on order that usually take days, now turning into weeks. So I assume it will be weeks getting that red dot repaired and returned. With my long drawn out explanation, is it probable getting drenched by rain can cause this 'halo effect"? If so, is there anything I can immediately do to correct it? Could moisture had made its way somehow into the viewing glass and could this be permanent? I received a suggestion from a buddy to put it in a tight container with rice for a week to draw out the moisture if that's the problem. Anyone ever experienced this problem? Thanks Guys!
  4. I've never used steel ammo in any handgun, too rough on them, I always use factory new ammo and never any reloads. Like I mentioned, my buddy opened his slide and slid the rounds in his chamber with no problems and fired. In retrospect, I wish I had thought to ask him after he slid them into his chamber, to put them in his magazine and try it? I used all "Freedom Munitions" at the Steel Challenge Saturday with the Walther and didn't have any ammo problems. It's got to be some bad ammo???
  5. Long story short: For the last three months at USPSA matches I've had a severe jam on my Canik TP9SFX, so severe I had to hold the slide as tight as I could and bang on the grip a lot to eject the unfired round. The rounds did not fire, and upon inspection I could not see any deformations or ammunition defects? It always occurs once about every fifty rounds. I was over at a buddies house with my brand new Walther Q5 Pro 9mm practicing steel challenge. The same thing occurred "twice" on my new Walther. Had to hold the slide hard and pound the grip to eject the unfired round. We both inspected the rounds and didn't see anything wrong. He put both 9mm rounds in his pistol and they both fired and ejected normally? I thought I had a bad batch of ammo originally but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.
  6. Hello hipower, nice to talk to you again, its been awhile. I really couldn't afford that Q5 either and it was on my wish list. Dear Santa Clause: Then a check for $1,200.00 unexpectedly showed up and a wry smile and thought came over me, LoL. I like my Canik TP9-SFX and it shoots 115 Gr. well but has problems shooting heavier loads, I've heard some do that and it can be fixed by installing a different Glock recoil spring? I have a 'rubber Talon grip installed on it, and last USPSA match my hands were sweaty and the grip was slipping around in my hands. Ordered the rough granular texture from Talon Grips and that should take care of that. Ordered my Walther from the same FFL I purchased my TP9-SFX from and was looking around at the candy in the display cases while my NIC check was in progress. They had a new one in the display case and I looked at the price. I was amazed, it was about $200.00 more than I paid for mine, it must be getting popular and everything is going up in prices? Seen the price for one little package of hamburger lately, and can only purchase one?? I've got some arthritis in my hands and fingers too, and I found out the other day when I first shot my new Q5; it's the hardest pistol I have to rack, not exactly sure why? But after I've exercised my hands and fingers awhile, I get a little more strength back in them. That's the reason I sold my Kimber .45's, I could only rack them on my better days. What good is a pistol if you're not capable of racking it each and every time? My Canik has that great little slide handle that's perfect for those days when the mind says yes, but the hands say too many birthday candles... I see and shoot much better with my ballistic bi-focal safety glasses but, I have to cant my neck back to focus and see the iron sights and it's not natural or comfortable. A red dot is the 'cats meow' but again, without corrective lenses it's not a sharp dot, there's a starburst halo to it. I also need more practice quickly acquiring the dot initially and not searching for it, but that will come with practice and time. It's really improved my accuracy but, it's just another thing that will eventually malfunction and fail at the worst time. I learned a lesson during the previous two year shortage period about not having adequate ammo, magazines, etc. for a prolonged shortage. With the exception of my .357 revolver, I standardized call my handguns to 9mm to simplify life. And ordered enough 9mm and magazines to practice and shoot matches like I normally do for at least a four year period. While most were enjoying themselves going BANG-BANG-BANG, I had to conserve, choose and restrict my activities; and that was no fun...
  7. Thanks for the information and sources. I've checked all the main vendors to find just a replacement guide rod spring and nowhere I've ran across does anyone mention Glock springs for Walther's. Would you happen to know where I can find out what the factory recoil spring weight is on a Q5 Match Steel Frame? Also, will a standard Glock spring work, or does it have to be a flat wire spring? Thanks a bunch!
  8. Hi, long time no see... I think Walther is the second oldest gun maker right behind Beretta and had a great reputation. I'm shooting a Canik TP9 SFX in competition, and for the money it's an excellent gun but, for me it doesn't "feel" right in my hand [my logic and reasoning to purchase another gun]. A buddy of mine showed me his Walther Q5 Match Pro SF and let me shoot it. By far, the ergonomics and fit to my hand and liking is like no other. For months before buying one I was struggling between it and the CZ Shadow 2 and I was leaning towards the CZ because of its popularity. But, not having access to actually holding one and shooting it, I elected to put my economic stimulus check toward it [good ole Uncle Sugar ]. I'm having nothing but trouble with Walther since I got the gun last week. My FFL ordered the wrong spare magazines I needed and went to their website to order them and other spare parts for it, and they're all sold out of everything I wanted with no back ordering or expected due dates. The only other place I could find that had them in stock was "Cheaper Than Dirt". I can't disparage that place enough and won't say how much I got soaked to get two magazines delivered. Finally got around to shooting it yesterday morning, after adjusting the iron sights some, I'm going to like it. But these old eyes need the advantage of a red dot, shooting with my bi-focal's I have to cant my neck back. After contacting Walther about the three optic plates that are suppose to come in the box, they sent me a link to now get 'one' free optic plate, no telling when that will arrive? Trying to find that information on their website is deeply hidden, and I still can't find who or where to buy just a replacement recoil spring without the guide rod, just the $129.00 Tungsten replacement. I hope everything I need and ordered arrives before my 'Steel Challenge' this month so I can get it together and use it, this is taking forever it seems. Somebody please pass me a Kleenex
  9. Nah, I gently pour them into the ammo can. The more I think about it and some of the comments above; I think I bought that WWB sometime around the Obama scares and shortages? I think I'll chock it up to shortages, maximum production with less quality control to meet demands. Yeah, it could be over-pressure but, you would think if it was too much powder we would hear and notice it? Shooting my competition Canik TP9SFX, everything feeds and ejects just fine except about every roughly 50th round, when the casing gets stuck in the chamber and you can't manually pull the slide back to eject it. The casings are getting deformed after they are fired.
  10. Big problems at my last 'three' USPSA matches. I've got casings stuck so tightly in the barrel chamber they will not eject. I've had to hold the slide as hard as I can and punch the grip many times to eject the casing. Needless to say how my match results turned out. I use a number of brands of ammo and all new, never reloaded [best deals you know], I just dump a few hundred into my little ammo can to make sure I have more than enough for the day and go. Long story short and I'm going to get to the bottom of this issue. I dumped out the 200 rounds or so when I got home and inspected each of them. Of the 200, four of them the projectile was way too far pressed into the casing. I assume that would cause a casing expansion issue? Upon further inspection, it was all Winchester White Box. I don't know if this is normal quality control or just a bad batch I picked up? Anyone else had issues with WWB? You're zipping along doing pretty well and having fun when this time consuming jam occurs and wrecks your entire match and day. Disappointing. I suppose the best solution is to individually inspect each round for deformities before use... Who pays attention to the ammo when you're rushing to reload magazines for the next stage? Being a R.O. at 67 years old, having to pay the same match fees, not having the time to re-hydrate or sit down to relax a minute or two, having to rush my reloading, and these consistent severe jams are starting to wear me down and it's becoming work and not pleasure. Looks like with age I'm becoming a whiner.
  11. Ah Walther... My first Walther, I just dropped $1,800.00 for a PPQ Q5 Match Pro SF. Did all my diligent research and watched many Youtube videos. When it came in last Friday, it was missing all three of the optic plates. Every video I watched it came with the three plate, there was absolutely nothing on Walthers website I could find about the optic plates. [it's buried in the manual section somewhere they said?] Long story short. Got an email from Walther stating they stopped including the plates last November, not to raise the cost of the pistol again. You can order "one" for free, still waiting for it and haven't shot it yet. After two matches shooting an optic on my Canik SFX, I'm still having difficulty picking up the dot in a timely manner. As soon as I do pick it up, I like and shoot it better than the iron sights [old eyes]; but it's just one more thing that can and eventually will go wrong in a competition.
  12. Just curious? I don't believe I've ever seen even one person take advantage of these trigger guard cuts?
  13. I feel ya! Just got the Vortex Venom and the wind-age / elevation adjustment screws just float around and could not adjust. Pressed hard on the screws to try to adjust and it worked and was able to sight it in. Hopefully it holds with no further adjustments [the adjustment screws still rotate the way they want to go under recoil. Going Trijicon or Sig Romeo next time.
  14. Sounds like you're most interested in the Sig P320 series? I have two of them, Sig P320 subcompact & P320 X-carry; love them both with never even a hiccup. Some of the Sigs come optic ready, as my X-carry, but you have to be careful selecting which optic you select for it [even in the Romeo optics] for fit and screw alignment. I also have the Canik SFX in 9mm, great Turkish made gun overall. There's a problem with some of them like mine, mine will cycle 115 gr. all day long. Anything heavier and have ftf, fte issues but can be fixed with different Glock springs. The Canik is the best buy for the money and has every base plate you need to mount almost any reflex / red dot on the market. It's considered a fully size but I don't have any problems making it concealed. Good luck
  15. They're beautiful revolvers, had one in the early 1980's and unfortunately sold it. Everyone needs to own at least one nice revolver. I now have only a S&W 686 plus, 4" barrel. I don't want a pricey safe queen. With my age came a little more practicality in owning handguns. If I were younger I'd have a different outlook on investment or passing it down. These days, what practicality is there with a six shot revolver compared to a semi-auto with 10-15-17 rounds or more? For home or CCW defense, one doesn't know how many assailants or the situation faced. I'm old and slow, and can reload a magazine much faster than speed clips when necessary. The only practical use I've found with my S&W revolver; is the occasional rotation if I want to win my division in USPSA steel challenge [being the only one shooting a revolver ]. The handgun used in a self defense situation is going to be confiscated for evidence. I've heard horror stories about the treatment of their expensive handguns when confiscated, if they were ever even returned at all without hiring a lawyer.
  16. For the second time in ten years, I had another attempted break-in at 2:00 A.M. We stayed up late watching a movie and just settled into bed, when the wife and I both heard a series of louder unusual mechanical noises for lack of a better descriptive. Someone and not something was causing them. Living in the country it's very dark outside and last time someone tried to break in, it took the sheriff's deputy 45 minutes to find my house and get here. Had no idea from where this noise was coming from? If someone is out there they can see in, but I can't see out with the living room light on. What to do? Well, naturally I had my bedside gun in hand and went down stairs. Should I call the sheriff and request a deputy? I'm not absolutely positive it's someone trying to break in, it just sounded like it. I really want to go outside and have a look-see, but if my suspicions are correct, and I make an encounter, most likely in this state it would be considered "hunting". Besides, I want to avoid any legal criminal / civil potentials at all costs. I have my burglar alarm on and I best wait for daylight, go back to bed and sleep lite. Next morning sure enough; the basement door / frame was all messed up from working and prying the dead bolt and door lock. If broken into they or he had access to the upstairs house. No sense calling the sheriff's office and reporting it, what good would it do other than a report and waste my time. The following day I installed heavy duty chicken wire over every window in the basement and garage. Glass will have to be broken and the wire cut to enter through there. I installed a 2 x 4" with brackets on the basement and garage doors. As additional backup, I went to Lowe's and bought a few of those door stop bars you put under the door knob to floor that prevent the door from opening. I installed motion detector lighting outside for one side of the house. Here in Tennessee I suppose it's better to be passive and reactive, rather than proactive and on the offense, for legal justification reasons. It seems to me, someone trying to break into your home [home invasion], knowing someone is inside and you're home... They have to be dangerous, desperate and not rational with their intentions. The criminal has the upper hand of where, when and how he strikes. The criminal is on the offensive with their intent unknown, while the victim [even under the Castle law] for a better defense, best retreat and avoid confrontation, especially outside of the dwelling.
  17. Still legal, I'm sure I would have heard of any changes. Just make sure you retain a signed copy of the sale with model, serial, D.O.B., address, telephone, cal., date, drivers licence, etc. for your records. You just never know?
  18. Again we have a lot in common. I was going to upgrade my G26 gen 3 to the gen 5. Looking through the glass counter I spied a Sig 320 sub-compact and asked to see it. Long story short, I walked out with the new Sig and kept my G26. BAD, BAD sales counter gun guy! There should be another liberal law against impulse buying
  19. Apparently he didn't watch any American cowboy movies with the 12 ga. shotgun blowing a person back 15 yards
  20. I was in the same thought process. My primary CCW is also a G19 Gen 3, and I also have a baby Glock 9mm Gen 3. I also had a Ruger LCP, small great dependable gun. I was inventorying my ammunition one day during the last ammo crunch, to see how many rounds I had for each caliber or gun I had. To see if I was getting close to having to cut back on my shooting matches and practice, as all popular ammo was difficult to get at reasonable prices. Then the thought hit me... Why am I stocking so many calibers, I don't carry a back up gun, and about the only time a use the LCP is to walk the 200 yards down to the mail box or trash, and I slipped it into my pocket. I've since standardized my handgun collection to 9mm, with the exception of my .357 revolver. Now a short trip to town or the mail box, I slip a small 9mm into my belt with a sticky holster appendix position and good to go. Being an old man with diminishing eye sight and not wearing my glasses; not long ago running late to a pistol match, I reached into the safe and grabbed a few boxes of 9mm for my G19 I was going to use. Long story short, arrived at the match and began to load the first magazine and the round wouldn't fit. I grabbed .45 caliber by mistake. Do you know the feeling that came over me? But anyway, the LCP is a great little gun and has its place. I find since I consolidated ammo it's much easier grabbing what I need, how much I have and need to keep on hand, etc. Just a matter of personal preference I suppose.
  21. I've bought a number of holsters from Tulster, I give them 5 stars. The latest being one for my recent purchase of a Sig 320 sub-compact (left-handed). As you're probably aware, you can't get a holster for the P320 just everywhere. I'm happy with every Tulster I've bought for my other pistols too. Just have to make sure the plastic belt hook is snug under the belt. I ordered and installed their snap loops for better more secure retention of the holster. But, hard as I try, I can't get those snaps to wear in so I can unsnap them to take off the holster, so I switched back. This quality holster has attention to detail, is well made and no snagging or sharp areas. The cant is adjustable and depending on my activity that day, I comfortably wear it appendix or at 8 O'clock. CAUTION: Think twice about securing your holster screws with blue Loctite. It's a bugger trying to get an offset screw driver on the backside to make any changes. I ended up using needle nose vice grips to remove the screw from the thread end.
  22. I like and use Talon Grips myself on all my Glocks. Really like the aggressive texture one for competition, but tears up my t-shirts and creates a lot of dust bunnies in the gun if I CCW with it. Been there done that... I use skateboard tape on the slide so my fingers don't slip off.
  23. Say hey everyone, [1] My Glock 19 generation three is getting pretty worn and scuffed and thinking about getting a new G19 fifth generation. Will my spare parts for my G19 3rd gen. fit the 5th generation? [2] Ordered a new Wilson match grade barrel for the G19 and read some reviews that some minor filing might be required to make it fit? Filing what and where? The new barrel or inside the slide somewhere? Yeah I know, if I'm that stupid I don't need to be doing my own gunsmithing! Thanks!
  24. I will be, the 'wired' camera's from Harbor Freight and hook it all up to a computer monitor. For some reason, satellite Internet will not work sending to mobile devices. They did not explain to me why? Out on the main country road a couple of miles from here they are installing underground high speed internet. But they are not going to branch off and run it to us recluses. Discriminating against us protected classes of recluses I tell ya
  25. Yeah that's what I wanted also through ADT and had a guy come out to give me an estimate for full house video surveillance. The only Internet service I can get here is satellite and ADT system will not work off wifi and satellite. So, guess I'll order a 'wired' system from Harbor Freight?
