  1. In the unlikely event that my wife would go camping she would love a game of Scrabble and a glass of wine in the evening.
  2. Welcome RED, good to see you here.
  3. Exactly, there are already 100s of flights a day over our cities with the same capability and there is no probem with that. The government and the people making decisions is the problem not the tools that they use. The government already has the technology to watch every part of your life should they decide to do so. All this does is give our law enforcement officials (most are honest folks just like us) a very valuable tool to catch bad guys and protect us. I am more concerned with guns in the hands of criminals since it is much more likely that someone will commit a crime with a gun than most of the conspiracy theories spouted in these threads about technology. Hmmm, maybe we should do something about this evil gun technology, ban it? regulate it? That way people won't kill each other anymore without the technology to do so.... If the government does go too far we have enough rednecks with guns (I count myself in that group) around the country to do something about it. Until Skynet comes online and Terminators walk the streets, I will embrace technology and promote oversight on the people using it.
  4. I am using Willmaker based on the suggestions of many others on the Saiga 12 forum who have successfully done it that way with their SBSs.
  5. 6 months in Afghanistan as a radio operator/CAS coordinator supporting the 10th Mtn Div showed me that if I ever have to move cross country, on foot, in the winter, with your whole life on your back, you had better be in great shape. I am not a big guy, just lean and strong. That's why Crossfit is popular among guys who operate in the worst conditions. So if you aren't fit to travel, get good at building fighting emplacements:-)Here is my indoor gym (edit: There's my drywall square, been looking for that)One of my outdoor gyms, move a pile of rocks from one place to another.
  6. I use a USB converter for the 3rd monitor http://www.amazon.co...ils_o01_s00_i00. The Mini supports 2 but you will need adapters based on your monitor's input type. This work great for static stuff (email, text, PowerPoint, etc) but not great with movement. On Lion you'll have to download the new drivers from the site. I don't have any real complaints, works great for a second/third monitor
  7. That's a good price on a Lion Server but you can find cheaper Minis if you don't need the power of the i7 and Server. I have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 2.53 core 2 duo and it runs CS5 apps with no problem. The new Minis don't have internal disk drives but external ones work fine (I have 4 hooked up). I also have 8gb RAM and a 512 gb ssd that I bought instead of upgrading the whole Mac. I use Parallels for the few windows programs that I need to use and also have 3 23" monitors running too. Even the older Minis are very capable machines. Small and very quiet too.<b><b>also, while looking older Macs do not get a pre-intel one, only intel processor based Macs can run Windows.
  8. I ended up finding a guy with a machine shop who let/helped me do the work. While this is ok, you cannot leave your gun with a non FFL gunsmith without you being there. There may be guys who will say that you can loan it to him but don't take the chance of getting him in trouble and hurting his business or worse. Also, making it a habit of taking all your guns to him regularly could give the impression that he is running an illegal gunsmithing operation. Just be careful and know the laws. I just do 90% of the work myself, better for everyone that way.
  9. That drum is expensive but full auto might be an option in the future...
  10. Check out my post for the latest on this project. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/76696-my-first-gun-project/ I cut the gas system by 3.75"...
  11. I'll have to check that out, thanks.
  12. Yep, we have been trying to find more organic wines to minimize the crap in the wine. Can be expensive but there are some decent, inexpensive ones.
  13. We moved here from Redlands, what part of CA did you come from? You made the right choice, welcome!
  14. What area is that? I am in the Johnson City area and it's impossible to find someone to do lathe work on my S12. I'll probably have to go to Knoxville but not having luck with that yet. I just need the barrel turned down and The Monster Brake reamed out to slip on. I know I can mail it in somewhere but I would prefer to discuss this in person and watch how its done so I can learn something. Dolomite, do you have any suggestions?
  15. Is this going to be a regular need? We have a lot of full wine bottle since the wife is pregnant but after May/June we will start up again. So, if you need them on an ongoing basis we can help. Aren't you near Bristol?
  16. I am working on my s12 right now just waiting on my tools to arrive. I'll be moving the gas block back and eventually will have about an 11" barrel. Here is my project thread so far. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/46051-saiga-12-project/page__fromsearch__1 Did the conversion already and it went well. Definitely something that I think every s12 owner should do themselves. It's not very difficult with basic tools and I learned how the gun works and how the parts go together. If you do the conversion here are some of my lessons learned: Get the axis pin retaining plate, the conversion kit comes with a shepard's crook but I hate dealing with the wire retainers. The plate is so much easer. Modify the BHO if you decide to use it, I can email a template if you need it. I just visually copied the one at CSS. Dolomite also had a good idea to grind the button round so it's less in the way. That's all I have for now but ask away and we'll do our best to help.
  17. Idea for the trunnion. Although, I may go with a steel back plate so that I can weld it to the gun for cleaner lines. http://store.carolin...al-Stock/Detail Another one, I just don't need the holes for my design. http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-134/TROMIX-SAIGA-RECEIVER-BACK/Detail
  18. I don't think that I will have iron sights at all. I can hit what I aim pretty well at close range, an SBS isn't good for much else except for maybe slugs. I never really used the sights on my 500. I have an optional top rail so I can add my Eotech clone if I like. I am going for a clean design, I might even fit the rivet heads and weld them flush and remove the side scope mount. There was one that I saw with a hand guard longer than the gas system with a small light mounted in the gap, I am thinking about doing that with a small laser for quick acquisition. Have an auto plug makes it so I can block the adjustment knob without concern. I have only recently started thinking about the rear of the gun. I would like a quick detach stock that can be removed with a pin and a single point sling attached. I don't like folding stocks, just too much going on and I like super clean looks. When I finish the gas system I'll take a closer look at the stock while I wait for the SBS stamp. I still have to find a use for the Monster Brake. Thinking about milling the fins a little so it points more out to the sides than back and integrating it into the hand guard somehow. I didn't notice much recoil reduction anyway but I still need to do more testing. Might get a drum too... This will keep me busy for a while and I am going to take it slow and keep doing lots of research, no need to rush things.
  19. I'm committed now. Haven't decided on the barrel length because that depends on a few factors like how the brake is going to integrate with the hand guard and how I decide to address the gas system. This gas tube was a pain! I didn't have to resort to buying a press but I did bend a couple of punches on the pins. Now I just need to find a lathe and TIG welder to work on this thing. At the very least I plan on starting classes in the fall for my "Machine Tools Certificate" so i can use the equipment there. I just need to use up my GI Bill and always wanted to get better at metal working.
  20. Good thread on the S12 SBS. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/38318-sbs-technical-info-thread/
  21. I think I am going to go the SBS route and shorten the gas tube as well. I am taking it slow and not totally sold on the idea but I think it would be fun and I have the necessary basic skills to get it done with some help. I may have to take your offer of a visit and pick your brain for some ideas. We'll see how it goes, did some grinding/polishing today and I think the project has its hooks in me. Going slow and triple checking the measurements would be key and there are enough parts available to get it done right without needing a machine shop to fabricate them. For example, I think this solves the piston length issue, http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1284/Tromix-Saiga-12-shorty/Detail It's mostly just making sure your cutting/welding/lathing is accurate and clean. The steps are pretty straight forward. I'll document here as I progress. It will be a learning experience at least.
  22. Dolomite, Do you have a muzzle brake for your S12?
  23. Here's another similar to the TAC-47, http://randrtargets.com/site/products-page/saiga-parts/magwell-w-release/ I do like how the TAC-47 is integrated into the trigger guard and the button looks better, I would prefer the maxwells with the built in mag releases. I haven't tried any though. That is my next purchase consideration.
  24. I haven't tried that rail but it looks nice, I just couldn't justify the cost when I could get mine for $99. The Chaos does look better though.
  25. I may just have to stay away from Walmart stuff, not a big deal. Thanks for the tips!
