This would have to be on a receiver that was made without a stock to begin with. I don't think you can just remove the stock and call it an AOW with a barrel under 18" since it was originally made as a shotgun with a stock. I wanted to do this with mine but the consensus was that chopping the barrel would make it an SBS not an AOW. I would love to be wrong on this and be able to make it an AOW instead of an SBS and save some money even though both ways require an ATF tax stamp. Here's mine: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/76696-my-first-gun-project/ There's good info on shorting the gas system and the SBS/AOW discussion. I am glad that I shortened the gas system just to say that I did it and it was a fun project just not for the faint of heart:-) I have read that one way to do this is machine a new front trunnion and trash the old one and attach it to a stock less S12 to create an AOW.

I had to bend the spring out too, no problems since. Get the retaining plate, it has saved me much frustration since I have taken apart my S12 many times and will do it again before I am done with my project. Some people don't mind the shepard's crook or other contraptions but I hate them. Wait to order it though after looking at all the options for upgrades available so you don't pay $5 to ship a small metal part by itself. Carolina Shooters Supply is the place to go for that. Does the Bolt Hold Open (BHO) lever have a spring/wire on it, can't see it in the pic? Have you found the Saiga-12 Forum yet? That's the best place to go for all of this, the simple stuff has probably been asked a lot already and a lot of the advanced stuff (not being snippy with a "do a search" answer just letting you know it's there). I haven't seen a lot of people who have done a lot of work on Saigas here but we are here for you.

VX II 4x12x40 vs. SWFA SS 10x42

I like my SWFA 12x. The mil-quad reticle is pretty cool and one of the main reasons I bought it plus the great reviews and price. -
Gun Free Zone: "How Not to get Raped"
Romad7 replied to npgunner's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
How about if she says she is menstrating really loudly (scream it, even) and then pulls out her gun;-) I'm pretty sure that is high on the list of a guy's worst nightmare so should be doubly effective, right? And if she feels the need, she can always piss on the body just to follow as many of their guidelines as possible. -
What's the cost on that?
-
Quite boring but for a new gun owner, you might learn some good things. The test is easy, everyone passed even though there were some that looked like they weren't going to. Congrats on the new girlfriend and welcome:-)

I've noticed that most people go to about 1/4" to 1/2" over the legal length to avoid any question of legality, something to think about...
-
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll do that.

Well it's confirmed to be an 1890 Police made in 1892 base on the serial number so I'm happy about that. It's 44-40 like all 1890s. I'm still tracking down the story of the original owner through family so I pass that on for those who like a little history. Thanks for the help!

Is this actually a new thing? I am wondering if the instances of self defense with a gun are increasing or if the media is reporting it more since guns are the big topic of the day. I wish every instance of self defense was pushed on the news but this just looks like the media following the latest trend for the masses.

Don't forget Craig's List. That's where I got mine. Just had to put in some work and go pick it up but I had a local moving company install it. Mine is over 1100lbs so for what you are looking for it'll be much easier to move.

I don't have much experience with revolvers but that sounds reasonable just not for the inexperienced. I'm more of a Glock guy so my outlook is cover that trigger with as many layers of safety as possible. I was practicing with my wife's LCP which is probably comparable to the long pull of a revolver and that is definitely a different experience than the light Glock trigger that I am used to. I am much more comfortable with her having one in the chamber in her purse than with my Glock so this might work fine with practice. Reminds of the guy on Blackhawk Down, "this is my safety" when referring to his trigger finger. Definitely practice a lot with this system (as with all methods of carry).

I don't like anything that doesn't cover the trigger, might work for some but I'm a little more careful than that.

Thanks for all the comments, I should have better info later this week after getting appraised. I emailed a guy that deals in antique firearms and just from the pictures he confirmed that its an 1890 and should be chambered in 44-40. We'll see what he says in person though. Speaking of selling heirlooms. I saw a WW2 era 1911 with a matching 380 pistol on their website that belonged to a Brigadier General. It was sold to this shop by his family! Once you sell something like that its gone forever, I have a thing against selling gift guns let alone one of a kind (to me) family heirlooms. I won't be attempting any kind of "restoration". It's perfect just the way it is. I like to imagine that the dirt in the action is leftover from a dusty ride in some unfamiliar territory and the grips are stained with the sweat and oils from his hands pulling it from his well worn holster in response to one of the many dangers back then. There are even wear marks where the cartridge would rub when reloading over and over again. I'm a bit of a romantic and I am definitely falling in love with this gun:-)

I can't find much on the 44 Remington. I'll have to research some more, maybe the tolerances were looser back then and aim being too tight on the measurements. Could be too that the 45 Colt casings were slightly different too. It's a fun mystery!

It's definitely priceless to us but it would be cool to find that it's actually a valuable collectors item too. The owner of the LGS here was practically drooling over it when I asked him about it. He just about offered me any modern gun in the case. He couldn't understand that it wasn't for sale even if he offered me all the guns in the case. The cool thing is that we also have her Dad's Beretta 92 as well to go with it. He was a Colonel in the Air Force and in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He carried the same type of gun (M9) in Iraq and I carried one in Afghanistan so that might make a cool shadow box some day with both guns and our medals and badges.

Wasn't there a cop that accidentally shot a guy on the ground when he was trying to pull his taser and pulled his gun instead? This looks like a similar situation waiting to happen.
-
Oh, I won't be shooting this, it's definitely going to be a safe queen!
-
Could it be an 1890 Police? Here is the Uberti replica
-
Yeah the box is pretty nice. I am sure it was made after his death so its much newer than the gun but still shows some age. 44-40 looks to be too small. Case is .443" and this cylinder bore is .4715". Probably a .45 of some kind.
-
Most of the pics that I can find on that model have the extra support under the barrel. Do you know what the difference between the two are? Was there a certain time that these were made without? Here is a link to a pic. Thanks! http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/a/ae/Remington1875Q%26D.jpg/450px-Remington1875Q%26D.jpg

Maybe, I'll look up the measurements and check the cylinder.

Good to know, that gives me a great starting point, thanks!
