  1. Nice job... I built near exactly the same thing a while back an am loving it so far, no issues at all and it is more accurate than I am.
  2. It is my understanding that an FFL is required for all cross-state firearm transactions. This is a pretty good FAQ summarizing the reules/regulations/laws: http://www.gunbroker.com/Support/SupportFAQView.aspx?FAQID=1118&NoCount=1
  3. I have never seen it closed, not sure it ever does, maybe sometimes for maintenance. There is no staff on site to open/close the place, you just show up, read the rules, and shoot. I always try to clean up more than my own mess hoping others will do the same.
  4. Picked up some wc 842 at the show, going to give that a try with the .223 77 grain Noslers I was going to use Varget for. Near half the price so worth a try. Thanks everyone for the replies.
  5. Thanks! I was totally missing that, that is very helpful.
  6. I asked on the huge software thread and answer was that this software does not allow users to choose number of posts per page. I had forgotten what a PITA it is to have to scroll through multiple pages.
  7. Mine worked for a while after the site changed over to new software. Now I'm getting nothing - I have received PMs and seen replies posted to threads I am subscribed to but no emails for any of those. I triple-checked my settings and everything looks correct. On a side note, I tried to look in the software problems thread but just sighed and gave up after realizing I would need to go through 10 pages. I do not see a way to search a thread, and I do not see how to show the entire thread on one page so I can let my browser do the search.
  8. I'm looking to buy some Hodgdon Varget, looking for the 8lb kegs. Saw it at Bass Pro in Sevierville for an outrageous price, way more than it would cost to buy online and ship. But I'd rather buy local and avoid shipping if can find a reasonable price. Anyone have recommendations on other places that might stock Varget in the Knoxville area?
  9. Good discussion. Makes me think of the others in the house, both those I want to protect and those who may wish to do us harm. If I were in that scenario I would retreat to the hallway that leads to my wife and kids and defend it until LEOs arrive. I'm not gonna help someone and risk his accomplice(s) taking me out and/or getting to my wife and kids.
  10. I'm in Maryville and there's nothing that I know of down this way. I'm an ORSA member and usually go there. There is no place that I know of at ORSA that is friendly to to really letting loose with an AR or practice shooting pistol or rifle while moving. There is the action range but AFAIK you can only shoot there during organized competition practices. For that kind of stuff I drive up to the range at Royal Blue. I try to pick weekdays and usually there are only a couple other folks there. There are 50, 100, and 200 yard ranges where you can set up your own targets and move around while shooting as long as you are not bothering anyone else. The gravel road to the range can get rough and I would not recommend taking a car. An SUV or pickup would be better, the only car I've ever seen there was a partol car an LEO brought in.
  11. You looking for competition level accuracy or just fun to shoot with practical accuracy? I ask because that barrel plus a free float rail are adding a lot of cost. The PSA stuff has worked out well for me, I bought a complete upper from them with the Magpul MOE hand guard and a 16" 1:7 chrome lined barrel for a real decent price. I'm still working on my skills but that combo shoots 2-3" groups at 100 yards using just a bipod and standard 55 grain FMJ ammo. Good enough for what I want to do for now. I have some heavier Noslers I am going to try to see if those help tighten up the groups. All that said, if you are looking for competition level accuracy then the more expensive barrel and the free floating handguard make more sense. I have the MBUS and they work fine, no complaints. Also have a Vortex SPARC which has not given me any trouble. I have been using a traditional 4-16x scope recently to do some reload accuracy testing, my eyes just do not work well enough with the sights or the SPARC (max 2x magnification) to be able to reliably see a small target at 100 yards. At 200 yards I am just aiming at a faint image unless I have more than 2x magnification - the dot on the my SPARC is covering a few inches at that range. Lastly the Magpul poly mags have worked well for me so far. But probably need to decide what you want here as aluminum or steel might be preferable for really rough handling or very long term storage. Other things you might think about if you do not already have them - bipod, brass catcher or brass deflector (if you want to save your brass), charging handle extension, cleaning rod guide tube, flash suppressor or compensator.
  12. That's the first thing I noticed. Also no visible setting for number of topics per page when viewing a forum. I googled a bit but could not find a general answer for the IP.board software, anyone know if it is possible to set these to something larger than the default?
  13. Agreed, not that difficult to get a permit and then you do not have to worry about someone nit-picking those definitions. I recently got my permit and this was one of the reasons. Before that I put all of the mags and ammo in a locked ammo can and kept the guns in locked cases when transporting. I hoped the fact that both were locked separately would keep everything within the law. But it would not hurt to put as much distance between the guns and the ammo as you can in your vehicle.
  14. Agreed, no real point in that law. And yes, as I understand it you can legally have as many 10 round mags as you wish but would be illegal if you had a single 11 round mag. The whole "assault rifle" thing is odd as well, there are "non-assault" rifles with detachable mags which are legal and I do not see a whole lot of difference. Of course neither law matters much to the criminals, just restricts us honest folks.
  15. I could make you some but the cost approaches that bullet belt listed above. My cheap 55 grain FMJ bullets cost about .09 each (bought in bulk box of 6000) and once-fired brass is worth something near that. So around .20 each round excluding the labor for cleaning and assembling vs. around .20 each round on that belt and you also get some cool links that might be useful in your art work. If you want to DIY with your own used brass we can work out a deal for some of the bullets out of my box as they get more expensive if you want to buy small quantities. Now that I look at it I might order one of those belts myself, would be a nice decoration over the reloading bench :-)
  16. Great, thanks. I put them on my server and just posted links. Was hoping to be able to create an album on tngunowners but hosting elsewhere works fine.
  17. My Palmetto State Armory build: PSA lower PSA lower parts kit PSA mid-length upper with 16" chrome-lined 1:7 barrel Magpul furniture Magpul back up sight Magpul bolt assist device Vltor single-point sling attachment Crosstac front sight picatinny rail (occasionally used for a bipod but works for a light as well) Added up to somewhere in the $8-900 range excluding optics. With a Vortex SPARC: With a scope on it ready for some reload accuracy testing:
  18. New member here living in Maryville. Have enjoyed lurking on the forums for a while so decided to join and start actively participating. I'd like to post pictures to a thread but I'm not seeing how to do this... I've read the FAQ and it says to use albums from the control panel but I see no such thing. And my posting permissions say "You may not post attachments." Is there more explanation of this somewhere? Do these features turn on after a certain post count is reached?
  19. That sounds possible to me, especially for the last few rounds that go into the mag where significant force is required to compress the spring. Maybe experiment with a near full mag and load/unload the last couple of rounds several times to see if this happens?
  20. I'm a fan of the rock tumbler with stainless media. Rinsing/drying does add time to the process but I have been cleaning my brass in advance and storing it clean, that way I am not waiting for brass to dry the same day I am wanting to load. To speed up drying I take an old household box fan and set it horizontal supported by 4 blocks at the corners. Quart sized paint cans work well for this. Then put the wet brass on trays under the fan to dry. I have to start pulling the primers before tumbling, have not been doing that be the pic above shows such clean primer pockets that I'll be doing that from now on. Should also make drying quicker as there will not be that little bit of water stuck in the spent primer. I already had a rock tumbler so just use that. As mentioned above, the rock tumblers have rubber-lined drums but I'm not sure that is required for case tumbling. I would be wary of a bare steel drum but one made of plastic or lined with plastic would probably work fine. So seems like the plastic cement mixers might work.
  21. Thanks, that was an interesting read.
  22. Very nice. I am loving my PSA 16", I built it a little bit differently from yours, more of an M4 clone with Magpul furniture. Shoots really well with the 1:7 barrel.
  23. I think one of the Ruger .22LR autos would be nice. Initially as an introductory gun but forever cheap and fun to plink with. I would only mess with a revolver if you think she will want a full size revolver later.
  24. I firmly believe in such education. However, my wife still does not like the idea of my guns being accessible to the kids when I'm not around. I also worry about what their curious friends who do not respect firearms might do so mine stay locked up. I hope I'm never in a home defense situation where I do not have time to open the pistol safe but realize that is a risk/tradeoff associated with my setup. On the original topic - good discussion, I've learned from it. I will not plan to rechamber a round more than once or twice before it gets used up at the range.
  25. I use a rock tumbler and small stainless pins as tumbling media, the combo works great. Tumbler was "free" since had bought it years ago to tumble rocks with the kids. Stainless media was fairly expensive but does not wear out. More details here Stainless Steel Reloading Supplies | Tumblers, Seperators, Media & More!
