Well, if it's any consolation, you didn't smell so good, either. And I tricked you twice - there wasn't any film in the camera! JK!!!!!!

Yeah, I had a bad guy in downtown Denver, Co. a few years back who was pretty damned surprised that I was "packing." Actually, to be more accurate, I was packing a laptop in a heavy duty case with a shoulder strap and he was completely surprised that, instead of giving it up, I used it to beat the hell out of him "render him a non-threat." It also, I think, caused him to re-evaluate the wisdom in accosting a white guy wearing a black cowboy hat at 11:00 P.M. in downtown Denver. (Surprise can indeed be a good thing!)

To OC or not to OC? Since so many who CC seem to be offended by those who OC - in fact some who CC seem to be down right OCD about OC - and since so many who CC dress in such a manner as to be immediately obvious to a reasonably observant person that they're attempting to CC and so might as well OC, except that they're OCD about OC and insist on CC even when they should probably just give up and OC... ...I think I'm just gonna' try and find a whole new acronym just to be different. Like AOC or MIC or PFMFOCBITHTWACAIWRTKMSTI.

Actually, with that space, you could do two 3X4's with a foot or more room between them to make it easier to harvest. That'd be what, 12 plants per area? The neat thing about square foot gardening is that you can produce so much more in so much less space than in a conventional garden. Plus, it's a whole bunch easier to take care of. As to the hanging gardens, I sure like 'em so far - we mixed our own planting soil mix from composted manure, peat and palm kernel vermiculite, so if nothing else, we're already ahead of the game where slugs, grub worms, weeds and other residual/indwelling undesirables are concerned. Will definitely update as the season progresses.

Wouldn't carrying a hcp badge be the same as admitting that your carrying? And if so, why not save the cost of the badge and just make yourself a sign?
-
Actually, if you go with a 4'X4' size and leave room between them to walk around, harvesting is a breeze! Another option is 2'X8' which makes harvesting even easier yet. We tried our first (4X4) last year with good success and I'm looking at adding a couple of 2X8's next year - would have done it this year, but we're experimenting with "hanging gardens" this year and I just haven't had time to build the frames (I'm a cheap barsteward and just can't justify the cost of the ready made frames). Blueberries & blackberries... love 'em! Thank God they grow wild up on the ridge, 'cause I doubt I'd have the patience to grow 'em myself (although we did start some Concord grapes a couple of years ago and hope to start getting grapes next year. MMMMMmmm!)

I eat the kind of corn bread that starts off round, but gets cut into square chunks so it'll sop up more chili. Oh, and a couple of weeks ago I invested in some rubberized spray sealant and spray on bed-liner to coat the keel of my canoe. It cost me a total of about 20 bucks. Given that I've had this particular canoe for going on ten years and this is the first thing I've ever done to it, I figure that brings the cost trout up to about... well, let's just say that at this rate, in about two more years the trout should be paying me to catch them! (Actually, come to think of it, in a way they already do.)

...And forgot to start again? Or felt like you should say something, but couldn't quite figure out what to say and so remained silent - Then had your silence taken as an opinion? Or heard someone say "Opinions are like @$$holes." And realized that it's true, but not because "Everybody has one and they all stink." but more because nobody really wants to hear yours? (Might have to think about that one for a minute.) Or tried to explain something to someone in "simple terms" only to find that some things just can't be simplified? Or found yourself in a situation where you suddenly realized that you knew exactly what you were doing and no conscious thought was required? But then started thinking about it anyway and screwed things up completely? Or tried to make something sound more exciting than it really is, only to realize that it really is more exciting than you initially thought it was? Or had the epiphany that not having a clue about the best way to proceed, sometimes IS the best way to proceed? Just curious... **I wrote this several years ago for a different forum, but was inspired by recent personal events to post it here. ...TS...

I like that theory, I really do! (If only because it means that maybe my ex was wrong and I'm not really such a lard-ass after all.) As to all the stuff about Pi - well, I knew I was sunk the day my high school math teacher tried to tell that us "pie are square" and I told him he was wrong because any darn fool knows that pie are round -cornbread and brownies are square!
-
Yep, take it from a self-confessed cast-iron snob, original Griswold and/or Wagner Ware is the very best way to go! (Okay, I'm not really a snob - I have some Lodge that I really like, too, but my favorite is still the old Wagner Ware dutch that my mom got as a wedding present back in 1950 (from my grandmother who'd gotten it from her grandmother - they can have it when they pry my cold dead fingers from around it!)

Speaking of high-school physics - I have yet to figure out why a pinhole in the bottom of my canoe will let water in when I'm on the river, but won't let water out when I forget to turn it over and it fills with rain... must be one of those "lost socks in the dryer" sort of things. (I'm also still trying to figure out why the socks I lose in the dryer never match the ones I've already lost in the dryer, but then I digress...)

Doomsday preppers false sense of security
Timestepper replied to Glenn's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Actually, that is NOT a federal law (although most carriers have their own rules against it). And currently, the only state which specifically prohibits the carrying of firearms in a Commercial Motor Vehicle is Illinois. -
Hmmm.... Hundreds of hours and miles on rivers, creeks and lakes and I've only swamped once and that was my own fault. I'd love to say that it's due to my superior canoeing abilities, but the truth is that it's probably just the design of the canoe.

Although I'm not entirely mechanically inept, I've still found that the simpler I keep things, the better it generally works out for me. I guess that's why the sum total watercraft I own consist of an eleven foot leak in the shape of a flat bottom John boat and a sixteen foot canoe. The canoe does come with one "motor" and two "propellers" and generates approximately 1jap (jackass power): The "primary prop" is a standard canoe paddle and the secondary or "turbo charged prop" is a long-shafted kayak paddle for those times when I need extra power and/or speed. So far as I can remember, neither has ever failed me, although I will admit to the "power train" having become pretty well pooped a couple of times. I don't get there as fast, but man, oh man - I sure do enjoy the ride!

My humblest apologies. I obviously mistook humor for confession. Also please understand that I based what I said upon personal experience: I know people who are never late and I know people who are chronically late. The ones who are never late make plans, while the ones who are chronically late make excuses. You've asserted that this does not apply to you so, again, please accept my humblest apologies as I contritely rescind my unsolicited, unqualified and evidently completely inaccurate "diagnosis."

On my model, I once turned half the knobs all the way to the right and the other half all the way to the left... she voted Libertarian.

Actually, that's pretty much how I live my life. My best friend has often said about me, "If you want Don to show up Wednesday afternoon, tell him he doesn't need to be there until Thursday morning." That's a little extreme, but he's right - I'd rather be two hours early than five minutes late; Two hours early doesn't hurt anything. Five minutes late could make one helluva difference... maybe even life or death. Guess I'd just rather be bored for two hours because I'm on time than frantic for three because I'm running late. Oh, and with all due respect, your problem isn't with being "on time." Your problem is that you are habitually late and you'd rather blame the exigencies than your lack of planning for them. (Notice how that kinda' goes back to what I said about being responsible?)
-
I don't shoot at a range, but on time is on time, no matter where, what, when, how or who. With me you get one chance to be on time whether it's fishing, hunting, work or church. After that I don't ask anymore. I may be way off base, but it seems to me to be a matter or respect and responsibility - i.,e., if someone doesn't respect me enough or isn't responsible enough to be on time, then I'm probably better off with out them there, (especially if guns, swift water or sharp objects are involved).
-
Brother John, Seems somehow odd that I find you with me more now that you are "gone" than I did when you were "not gone." Or maybe that's just the way it's supposed to be and only feels odd from my narrow perspective. At any rate, it won't be long before I will be back on our favorite river with others we both treasure. And, in true fisherman and dreamer fashion, we will float and talk and feel and listen. And some of what we'll be talking and listening and feeling for will be the very essence of you. I'll see you on the river...

How is this for a fortified home

Sorry, I've always been opportunistically claustrophobic - I don't mind staying in one place, but I hate being told I have to. -

Impressive, but the very problem with impenetrable fortresses is that they are, by definition, impenetrable. Sure, no one can get in, but under siege, neither can they get out. So... just how long would it be before the fortress becomes a jail?
