I'm still not intimidated. Maybe it's just me, but I've never been intimidated by any valid form of correspondence which legitimately states that I owe money. And when I receive notification in writing that I owe the aforementioned money, I do my best to pay that particular debt as promptly as possible. I just don't find email particularly intimidating. OTOH, if they send a 7'-14" gorilla to my door and he threatens to shoot my goats and burn down my hen house if I don't give him 'X' amount of dollars right now... then yeah, I'd find that to be slightly intimidating.

No seat belts in 42% of fatal police car crashes
Timestepper replied to gregintenn's topic in General Chat
I guess if we really wanted to oversimplify it we could say, "Seatbelts don't save lives - not getting killed in a car wreck saves lives!" Man, I'm all for that! -
Noted. Should be back through tomorrow sometime. (Going to Marion, Il. to unload, then should reload in Paducah coming back this way. I'll know more this evening.)

The definition of a "good trade" is when both parties think they got the best part of the deal. Had a guy bragging to his buddies a few years back that I'd bought an "old flag holder" at his garage sale for 3 bucks! In the mean time, I got to brag to my buddies that I'd picked up an original Civil War Bayonet that some dipstick had turned up side down, stuck in the ground and put a flag in the base and only paid 3 bucks for it!

Wish me luck, yet another health issue
Timestepper replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
Best of luck with this. Painful or not, the last thing any guy needs (or wants) is problems with his boys. -
Taking a stab in the dark here, but it seems to me that anyone who is "intimidated" by something as innocuous as an email - which might very well be a scam, considering all the junk I get nowadays - probably ought to go ahead and pay the tax.

Doomsday preppers false sense of security
Timestepper replied to Glenn's topic in Survival and Preparedness
You're right, of course. Sorry. But it does at least establish a basis, even if it doesn't cover the most relevant areas. ('Course I guess that's like a road map that doesn't bother to actually show the roads.) Bad Timestepper! -
It was indeed, Dave, and I was lucky enough to be home to get it. THANK YOU! Should get a chance to stop at the Mapco (exit 24) today and I'd be tickled to buy you a cup of coffee if you're available. I'll shoot you a pm a little later this morning with the approximate time. Oh, and I wanted desperately to float the Clinch on Saturday, but my dear, sweet better half has informed me that I'm going to a rabbit show in Loudon instead.

I think I've finally figured out why the whole CC vs OC thing bugs me to the point of being uncomfortable. It's because it's like every religion vs non-religion/God vs atheist thread I've ever read: Person 1: "My way is better than your way because there's no scientific evidence that proves that your way is anything but stupid and uninformed." Person 2: "Just because you're too close minded and cynical to accept that my way may very well be the true way doesn't mean that my way is stupid." Person 1: "Your way may have had some merit 150 years ago when no one knew any better, but now that incontrovertible evidence has come to light, you really should accept my way." Person 2: "If my way was good enough for my daddy and his daddy and his daddy's daddy and his daddy before him, then by <deity> it's good enough for me!" Person 1: "Why can't you see that your way is nothing more than outdated, superstitious rhetoric?!!" Person 2: "Why can't you see that my way has its own personal merits?!!" Person 3: "Well, I grew up doing it that way, but I don't hardly ever do it that way anymore except on special occasions." Person 4: "I don't do it that way at all anymore, but that doesn't mean that I don't still believe in doing it." Person 1: "I've given you fact after fact after fact showing you exactly why my way is best, so why don't you get it?!!! Persons 2,3,4: "No, you've given us fact after fact after fact showing why your way is best for you." Person 5: "Person 1 is so obviously right that it doesn't make sense to me to approach it any other way, but to each his own." Person 6: "Well, what it all boils down to is that if your way is right, then none of this matters to any of us, but if my way is right it matters a bunch to all of us..." Person 7: "You know what? I don't really give a damn whose way is best - all I'm interested in is which way is best for me." Person 8: "I'd attempt to inject some humor into this free for all but I'm afraid that you'd all turn against me. Then again, what the hell - at least you'd be united on something!" I could go on (and on and on...) but I won't. We're all, as gun owners/HCP holders, supposed to be on the same side, and yet it seems that a little thing like how or where to carry continues to divide us. The CC guys talk about the impression that OC may leave with the uninformed public and don't take into account the occasional down right vitriol that threads like this one contain - Wanna' turn someone against gun ownership? Let 'em read one of these threads! And the OC guys talk about how honest they are and how they never have any problems because they continually comport themselves in such an aboveboard manner of decency as to garner the respect of the general public - Wanna' lose the gp's respect? Let 'em read one of these threads! From here on out, the long and short of it for me is that I no longer give a damn (not that I ever really did) who carries what or how they carry it, so long as it's done legally. I'm no longer going to state my particular preference or the reasoning behind it or the fact that said preference might change depending upon circumstances. Heck, from here on out, I may not even admit to carrying at all just because I'm tired of the vitriol exhibited on both sides of the fence. (Almost takes us back to the religion thing, doesn't it?) Bottom line, you wanna' carry concealed, do it! You wanna' carry open, do it! You wanna' go both ways and stick it up your @ss with a flag tied to it, please feel free. I promise to give absolutely not a damn - and I further promise follow my own advice and keep my nose out these threads in the future. Have a great week, everyone!

More than know how to grow coffee, I'd wager. Funny thing: In the historic journals, diaries, etc... I've read, more folks complained about the cost or lack of availability of coffee than about the cost or lack of availability of alcohol. Not saying that alcohol isn't a good thing to have on hand, but when it comes to comfort items (which are at least as important for mental health as actual survival supplies) I'll take a good pot of coffee over a gallon of booze. If only because I've never yet seen anyone turn into a raging @sshole and threatening bodily harm from drinking too much coffee.

Doomsday preppers false sense of security

By all means trust but verify. But I can save you the time because, as a truck driver for well over twenty years who was grandfathered in when the CDL was instituted, I've already done the research and I can tell you that, not only is your "CDL State Instructor" giving false information, but also - as I already stated - there is no federal law banning firearms in CMVs and, currently, the only state which specifically prohibits the carrying of firearms in a Commercial Motor Vehicle is Illinois. Happy trails! -
Generally, coffee will store quite well if kept dry. Keep it sealed in a plastic food grade bucket and it should keep for a loooooong time. Maybe the real question(s) isn't what it costs now, but how much will it be worth after SHTF? There's a thread about liquor as barter, but personally, I'd be inclined to think that coffee will be worth more - ultimately, booze is relatively easy to make, but coffee is going to get real scarce, real quick and I know more folks who "can't do without" their coffee than I do those who can't do without alcohol. Just something to think about...

Back when I was working construction I used to live on Luzianne coffee and I still enjoy the occasional cup. Big thing with me is that after I got heavy into experimental archeology and living history and started harvesting (digging, roasting & grinding) chicory root for my own use just to make what meager coffee supplies I carried last longer... well, it didn't take long to realize that there's a big difference between drinking it because I wanted to and drinking it because it was either that or go without. In other words,as much as I used to love chicory coffee and would take it over a regular cup any day, there came a time when I absolutely despised it and would have given all the chicory in the world plus a flintlock rifle and a good mule for a pound of pure unadulterated coffee beans - even if I had to roast them myself in a frying pan. I found the O.P. quite interesting - never tried the sweet potatoes, but it's something to keep in mind I guess - but my advice to those planning/preparing for an eventual SHTF/TEOTWAKI scenario would be to forget the store-bought, chicory laced stuff and try harvesting/preparing your own. There's no big trick to it and chicory grows all over the place. If you really like the taste of chicory coffee, it's a great way to save money, plus you'll have the bragging rights of having done it yourself. Otherwise, you might as well start now in preparing and planning for the time when coffee of any kind is worth its weight in gun powder and gold...

Guess ticks just don't like me much - I've only found one crawling on me so far this year (and that was after I'd gone to bed - damn dogs!) and none imbedded. Other than a fondness for garlic, I don't really do anything any differently. Heck I can't even remember the last time I used bug juice.

Anderson County Prep Fair 5/5/12
Timestepper replied to Timestepper's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Was actually fairly impressed. Maybe the best part was the Lodge Cast Iron booth with their skillet coupons (Basically picked up two 10" skillets for five bucks each), although there were several vendors/organizations represented and most were well staffed and informative. -
Nice catch! We used to specifically target channel cats during the spawn at Waconda Res. up home using lead heads tipped with live leeches - came back once with a mess of 10 fish each (two of us fishing) running from 7 to 16 pounds (came out to well over two hundred pounds of fish for an evening's fishing). Don't think I've gone after catfish since I moved to East Tn., but then again the trout & smallies have kept me pleasantly occupied.

This might give some insight: On a serious note, I think people always react differently to women than they do to men, regardless of the situation. I'd go a step further and posit that when women open carry, most automatically assume they're (the ladies) off-duty LEO. Or at least that seems to be what I've observed here in Tennessee. (My home state of Kansas, where open carry is more prevalent due to permit being needed only for concealed carry, is considerably different.)

Ummm, yeah. Good luck with that.

After fighting traffic on the Redneck 500 (I-285, the Atlanta Bypass for you non-travelers) earlier today, I decided that I needed something stronger than beer and sweet enough to put me in a more "cordial" mood, so I cracked a bottle of Phillips Union Cherry that I'd been hiding in the freezer for the past few months. Aaaaaaahhhhhh! Just the thing! (My apologies to true whiskey aficionados.)

Screw the email, I'm still waiting for them to send the Amazons I ordered back when I was single!
