AR Bolt/Carrier Problem
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to Clod Stomper's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
How much carbon do you see in reciever and on the bolt carrier group? Any signs of stress on the gas key? the most important question to me would be who did the build. If you bought it as a complete build I would expect it to be good. Something else also came to mind. From what I've seen grendels add substantially more pressure on the gas system in the shorter barrels then 556. -
AR Bolt/Carrier Problem
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to Clod Stomper's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I'll second whats already been said. Faulty ring. On the bright side it failed as designed. The ring gave way and nothing else. Being the softest piece in that area I would be surprised if there was any meaningful damage. -
Bullet shape/feature purpose
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to ReeferMac's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Hollow base usually to increase accuracy by putting more weight forward. They can also act as a type of gas seal. Flat nose is just as you said, clean hole. Think wad cutters. -
Bullet shape/feature purpose
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to ReeferMac's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I always look at what I'm trying to accomplish and then make a selection based on that. Hunting, weight retention and expansion. Dangerous thick skinned critters, heavy, solid, large meplat etc. Never really looked at the marketing/ company description stuff since I started reloading. I focus on the simple truths. Weight, intended bullet function, coefficient. From there everything is an equation I can plug into a calculator. -
Welcome. I myself am an escapee from the PRK (San Clemente). For a good open range out to 400 yards check out Montgomery County Shooting Complex. Going to be a bit of a drive, but its an amazing setup for cheap. There temporarily closed right now due to the virus thing but I imagine they'll be opening back up soon. https://www.shoottn.com/

Fort Campbell is locked down. What do you think an entire division, most of which live in the barracks or base housing is going to do. I can only imagine the number of njp's, office hours, and all the other goodies that are going to accumulate. Its only a matter of time before idiots start spider dropping off the tiers out of sheer boredom.

Looking for a reference to a qualified and respected gunsmith who is able to do a re-barrel job (including finish reeming and threading) on a standard M1A. Prefer to keep the business in our state if possible Note: Douglas Barrels did give me the name Gene Barnette, but I have been unable to get him to answer the number they gave.

Scope bases and rings for bigger calibers.
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Long Guns
Cant beat lapped vs plastic in my book. Also, a small drop of silicone in the front ring is what a lot of people I know do to avoid the scope slipping along the length of the rings. For a hunting rifle like yours though. All this might be a little excessive if your only worried about the rifle being a minute of beast platform. -
Scope bases and rings for bigger calibers.
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Long Guns
I would put more thought into scope slip then actual ring strength. I think just about any quality steel rings would work. Btw that is a light rifle for that caliber. Hope you got some shoulders. -
I regularly shoot distances 400 to > 1000 yards with everything from heavy 5.56 to .50. I will say that bang for buck and less punishing recoil .308 and 6.5cm are my two go too rounds. The question I would ask is how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Accuracy is consistency so while a larger sexier caliber might seem better on paper, does it matter at the end of the day if you end up teaching yourself to flinch everytime you pull the trigger. Personally I would start with a proven platform such as a weatherby / Rem 700, etc and see what you do up to 400. Then make a new set of decisions from there. You can take an action and re-barrel. You can adjust stock, glass bed, play with optics. It's been my experience that most decent factory rifles can outperform there owners especially while learning the ins and outs of "longer then usual distance" shooting.

M107A Supressor
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to PoofNoEyeBrows's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
Honestly I would think it's worth it if it dropped the noise factor from 5 inch naval gun down to a SMAW. And yeah I double up also. Hard to believe I used to sit behind a M2 with nothing but fluffed up cigarette bits in my ears. -
This is for all the M107A owners or others with practical experience. From a noise suppression standpoint, is it worth shelling out for the can on this system?

Powder for reduced muzzle flash AR pistol
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to Dirtshooter's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Honestly I think just about anything you cook up in 5.56x45 is gonna be pretty bright out of a barrel that short. Maybe a combo of reduced load with a better flash suppressor... -
What kind of accuracy do you get from your AR?
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to jeff43's topic in Long Guns
Depends on the build. I have a Rock River that is mil spec that shoots 2 moa and then I have a PRI mk12 mod 0 that shoots sub .5 moa. It just depends on the build. I find it more important to first have a solid idea about what the platform is for and how it will be utilized, and then fit the tool to the need. -

Where do you buy your reloading supplies?
PoofNoEyeBrows replied to enfield's topic in Ammunition and Reloading

Dont have any experience with the 229c but take a look at both safari land and blackhawk for a holster. Both make a couple of multi platform compatible holsters. Safariland 579gls Link
