  1. I haven't been hunting in about 15 years but, Hayden wanted me to take him this year. Last year, Santa bought him a shotgun that had an extra barrell for shooting slugs in case we ever did go hunting. (Thanks for the great deal, Range USA!) This weekend is the Youth Hunt weekend for the State of Tennessee so I figured it would be the best time to go. Hayden and I got up at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday to head out to Shelby Forrest with NO IDEA of where we'd go in the woods. I figured we'd just walk out there and sit a while and get it out of his system. (As you know, Hayden doesn't sit still very well.) When we arrived around 6:30 a.m., I remembered that you have to get a special WMA permit from the front office before you can hunt on the land. We went back to the front of the park to find out the office was not open. At about 8:15, I saw one of the Park Rangers going to the mailbox and asked him about getting the special permit. He told me they didn't open until 9:30 but, took us inside anyway to take care of the permit for us. By 8:30, we were on our way down the hunting roads. We tried to turn in to the first open spot we saw and noticed there was already someone parked in that area. Not wanting to disturb the other hunters that had their act together, we moved on to the second area we could pull off and it was open. We started hiking blindly in to the woods and I saw where someone had pink markers on some of the trees so I decided to follow their trail and hoping it would be worth our while. After about 250 yards of hiking, I was tired of HIKING and told Hayden that we had found the perfect place!!! We sat down by a tree and I checked my watch. It was 9 a.m. and I was about ready for a nap. I figured he might make it until noon and this whole deer hunting thing would be out of his system. A few minutes later, I noticed some movement about 25 yards from us. I looked up to see a spike buck. I reached over and tapped Hayden the arm and then another buck came behind that one! It was bigger and had bigger antlers. As the deer moved through the opening, Hayden had to turn to 90 degrees to his right, while sitting, and raise his gun for an awkward shot. The bigger deer looked directly at us and stomped his foot. I whispered to Hayden to remain very still but, I could see the weight of his rifle was causing him to lower it. The first deer turned around and came back past the bigger one, looked over at us, and then back to the bigger deer as if to say, "Nothing's there". When the smaller deer moved, I whispered to Hayden, "Take him. Take him." BAM! The shot from the 20 gauge, with the end of the barrell only about 18 inches from my head made my ears ring and I could barely see through the smoke. However, I did see that bigger deer buckle from the force of the impact and then dropped within the next two seconds. It was a very humane harvest and the deer never knew what hit it. I looked at my watch and it was now 9:15. We had only been in the woods for 15 minutes and this little punk had dropped a buck in its tracks! In the several years I hunted, I did good to just see a doe. This is NOT FAIR! Hayden had sat with his grandfather in a blind before but, this is really the first time he had gone on a real hunt and got to hold the gun. We waited 20 minutes and then went over to check it out. On Hayden's first hunt, he had harvested a 5 point buck within 15 minutes of sitting at the base of a tree that we decided on because I was tired of walking. Not even knowing how to field dress a deer, I really didn't know what to do next other than drag it 250 yards, through the woods, back to the truck and deal with it then. I don't know how much the deer weighed but, I'd guess around 10 million pounds by the time I made it back to the truck. (I only had to stop 7 or 8 times along the way.) Fortunately, another hunter stopped by to see what we had and walked me through the field dressing part. We checked it in at the closest station and I've taken it to the processor. We should have deer meat in a week or so for Amy to cook although, I doubt she will eat it. God couldn't have given us a more perfect day to hunt or hunting experience today. Jay
  2. I don't think MemphisMason will go for Logan's!!!! Colton's out in the Wolfchase area is usually not very crowded.
  3. +1 on the MTAC. It is a very hard holster to beat. I use a UBG Canute with my Glock 23 and I find it VERY comfortable.
  4. I'm obviously Jay and this is my group of rednecks. CZ PCR in a K&D Thunderbird Defender if you didn't notice it......
  5. Same thing here when I had a Warthog. I had to have a deathgrip on it for it to function. I learned to do it but nobody else could shoot it without it having one mean 3 point jam. I didn't want that to ever happen if I had to used it in self defense. I loved the idea of the pistol, 1911 design and holding 10 rounds but, I couldn't say I would always have a death grip on it in a quick self defense situation.
  6. Shouldn't db99wj be posting this? He seems to have appliance trouble at least once per month! Jay
  7. The first time I met my daughter's current boyfriend, my wife and I just returned from the range and I cleaned 3 guns in front of him. Six months later, he's still hanging around. True story.
  8. I have one for my 5" Kimber and it does a great job!
  9. I took the family down there last year and the only issue was the condo we rented. The management company had a "no weapons on the property" policy. That's all I'm gonna say 'bout that.
  10. Did't have time to shoot but great to hang out with some like minded folks. Baaaaaaaa!
  11. If the bank would agree to pay the $50K for the attorney to argue it for me in court, I'd neutralize the threat immediately. Otherwise, I'd have to waid for the robber to do something a little more provoking than point a gun at the teller.
  12. Just found the post and nobody else in the house is awake yet. The wife was just talking about going shooting this week! If she doesn't want to come, I'll see if my 12 yr old wants to. He'll want to bring his Bullpup 10/22 that he brought to the April meet. (Although we were late and only met a few people on the range.) Work has been crazy busy and I haven't been on the forum much. In such a "bad economy" where people can't find a job, I'm trying hard to hire 5-6 people! If anyone knows of someone looking for a job, I need people with a great attitude and good mechanical/electrical aptitude to talk to. I also am looking for at least one person with great LEADERSHIP skills and experience in management preferably on a technical side. (Great benefit: I carry every day at work.) Just might be able to make this meet!
  13. Can't help it..... "I wish my wife was that dirty!!" Sorry....
  14. I traded for one and was at least the third owner. I'm sure it had 500 plus down the pipe. I loved everything about it but, I was the only one that learned to shoot it without it jamming. You had to keep a "death grip" on it for it to function properly. (It would get some horrible 3 point jams that took 5 minutes to clear.) In an emergency situation, I wasn't sure I would be able to have such a grip every time and decided to trade it off. Great gun once you learn to shoot it. Small 1911 platform that holds 10 rounds, hard to get better than that. Hold on to it firmly and it'll get better.
  15. OK, you recently repaired your refrigerator and now it's the dishwasher! You know this kind of stuff comes in threes. Keep a close eye on the stove! LOL!!!! Jay
  16. Irregardless of all the AR / AK debate, I think I'm going AK to start with. I'm pretty ignorant about all the diffferent brands so can someone enlighten me? I don't like buying the cheapest of anything but I will pay for quality if you know what I mean. I've done some reading and Norinco 56s seem to be a good buy but I thought I'd ask the experts here. Thanks, Jay
  17. I didn't think you had to clean Glocks? That's why I bought one! Kidding, I'm really pretty anal about cleaning all my guns..
  18. Kimber 5" TLE in a MTAC is good to go! I even wear it tucked in dress slacks with a button down shirt and tie at work.
  19. Personally, the "can't stand this place" memories far outweigh the "that wasn't so bad" ones. Almost 20 years ago, I bought the new wife a pocket Beretta for Christmas there. (Don't recommend that by the way. Another long story.) At the time, there was a 14 day waiting period and they had given me the owners manual for the .25 caliber I had originally paid for. After I paid for it, I called back and had them change it to the .22 but, still had the .25 caliber manual, all 4 pages of it. I patiently waited the 14 days and sped to get there on the day I could pick it up, December 23rd. They were closing up and I got in just before they locked the door. The guy at the counter was just about to hand over the gun when we realized that I still had the manual for the .25 and forgot to bring it! (At this point, I was only 22 years old and had already purchased 4 guns from them and knew Burt, the owner, and his right hand man, Bill, personally as I had been doing custom work on Burt's vehicle at my shop.) The guy at the counter called Burt over and told him what happened. Burt looked at me and said, "No manual, no gun!" and proceeded to walk off. I chased Burt through the store as he held up his hand for me to leave him alone and I explained over and over that this was a Christmas present for someone and they would be closed until after Christmas. I finally talked him in to letting me leave a $50 deposit for that 4 page manual so I could take the gun home. ($50 was a HUGE sum to a newly married 22 year old back then.) After I returned the book and got my deposit back, I didn't go in there for 15 years and I really only go in there now when they are the only one that have something I want or it's just too convenient and I'm in a hurry. Most of the experiences have been OK since I've been back but, there is one guy behind the counter that just seems to have the same attitude I remember from Burt. I think his name is "Eddie" but, I could be wrong. The tall older gentleman has always been nice and helpful. Maybe I've held that grudge tooooo long but, for a four page manual, there is no telling how much it cost them in what I've bought elsewhere and how many people I've told that story to and directed them elsewhere.
  20. I waited a couple of months before my "elusive" PCR came up on Angus' site. Kevin at K&D made me a great holster for it and it's my regular weekend OWB carry. My G19 gets more weekday carry in a Smartcarry holster because it doesn't have the "beavertail" to poke in to me when I sit down. The PCR is an awesome gun though!
  21. I've had one for a couple of years now and love it. The "fluff and buff" made a HUGE difference. That's great shooting with that gun from 10 yards! I can hardly see the sigts on mine. It's a point shooting kind of gun for me.
  22. Yes. One of my sons was the one with the Bullpup. He cut yards last summer to earn the money to buy that stock. As I said from an earlier post, yesterday was his 12th birthday and he wanted to go to the range. The first thing he wanted to shoot when we got there was my Kimber. He likes .45 but prefers 9mm. If I don't watch him closely, he'll burn through a couple hundred rounds in no time! MemphisMason, I'm assuming you were the one with the black Mason shirt on? Here's the link for the BullPup if anybody is interested in one. It does use a rod to reach back and push the trigger so that makes the pull a little heavier but, it sure is fun when you add a 30 round magazine to it! http://www.bullpupgunstocks.com/ Jay
  23. I hated that I was running late and wasn't a part of the "meeting". I thought it might have been cancelled because of the weather when I couldn't find anybody when we first arrived. It was nice to meet a few of you out on the range though. If I didn't get to meet you, I was down on lane #4 shooting with my sons. I didn't know if we'd have enough lanes for everyone so the wife sat in the restaurant, behind the glass, and the boys alternated shooting with me. Hopefully, next time, I can be there in time to meet everyone. It was truly my loss!
  24. I've had the velcro about a year now and it conceals very well. Here are some pics of when I first started using it. I can tuck the shirt in MUCH better now! The gun is a Springfield XD45C.
