SERIAL NUMBERS CHART download http://www.danwesson...serial-numbers/ BTW ALL of the pics I see from you folk look super nice ! The engraved one is interesting - looks like a 15-2 VH (vented, Heavy lug) tswenka's second one looks like a 15-2 also but not the heavy lug Monson Mass is good with collectors I hear. I think the other is the Palmer plant. If that is the case then according to the "chart" : Mod 15-2 167xxx = 1978 Mod 15-2 173xxx = 1978 Hopefully someone that knows more than me can correct me if I got it wrong and/or pass some additional info into this thread.

Wow! You have some talent for that. Looks great.

Thank you. Not as pretty as that horse you have in the photo ! I saw a horse actually "hug" her friend/owner using it's neck to pull her in.

Saw a brand new still in sealed package Galco High Ride holster for my old DW 15, Bid was at $7.50. I entered my max of $48.00 and won it for $15.61. Also it shipped FREE ! I feel bad for the seller but then I have "lost" a few times. Every dog has his day !

Yeah I've been looking at that website. Good to see someone carrying parts and add-ons for these DW's. I will keep an eye on it, Always looking... I would like to see some Millett rear sights for the 15-2, I see some here & there but they are for the lg frame 41 & 44. Also I would like to get the 8" shroud based & scoped without D&T. I think ebay has a couple of those no-drill bases now- last I looked they were at 50 some-odd dollars with a day or two left. Anyway THANKS for the info. Maybe we can generate some interest in these nice firearms in TGO.

Yeah I looked at it closer... I was moving the whole gun! IF it is as much as 1/64 I would be surprised and is "welded" front to back. I will keep that gap at 006 and shoot it... I imagine I will be pleased. Thank you for the help. Geno

My cylinder locks up front to rear like a weld, however while still in lock up I can get slight cylinder rotational movement. Is a little, say 1/32" normal ? And if it gets worse do you know which new parts usually tighten it up ? Thanks ****** ( Parrothead & graycrait those are very nice DW's ! I would like to scope my 8" barrel )

Yeah, I have always loved the wheel guns, but got into pistols years ago. I will likely stay with revolvers the remainder... getting older and don't plan on getting into any lengthy gun fights lasting more than just a few rounds anyway ! You will like that Sig. Let me know if you can after you range-ride it. We are anxious to get that 28 out... now we have two to go with. My wife gets the 28 out about 6 times a day to play with it

Joined a DW forum and they had a very nice download of "known" serial number ranges. Mine was made in 1978. Can't wait to get it to range. I hear a lot of internet chatter about the accuracy of these and how they held/still hold? many records in Silhouette Competition shooting. ... maybe start reloading also since wife already has a nice 1976 S&W 28-2 in 38/357.

Got in a trade. No original box but 2.5"/4"/8" barrels. 4-way original tool & gauge for setting gap between barrel/cylinder. Also 2 original signature wood grips and the Pachmayer Presentation grips in photos. Looks like it was a safe-queen most of it's life. Has recessed cylinder and was made in the Monson, Mass. plant. Does anyone have an idea as to approximate year of mfg ? Ser# 1702xx Thanks

If you can't be with the pistol you love, love the one your with. I like every pistol I see.

Colt 1911 inspection needed ? Approx. cost ?
Geno replied to Geno's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Thanks everyone ! Sounds like you guys have been at the 1911's for some time. As for the movement ( Sorry ) I meant fore and aft movement with slide in hand- barrel & bushing in. Grabbing the barrel lug and moving fore and aft. Hope that helps. I will also order the Go/No Go. Otherwise I will try not to get anal about it and just enjoy the old Colt. It seems perfectly good otherwise as a nightstand pistol and occasional CCW. Thanks again to everyone- I am learning a lot on this Forum. -
I acquired a 1976 Colt Commander and after watching AGI 1911 Armorers video (Robert Dunlap) and a cursory look into Jerry Kuhnhausen's Vol.1 1911 book I am wondering if I have excessive looseness in the breech. I can feel some movement of the barrel while leaving the bushing in - does not seem like much but was comparable to the movement I saw in the AGI video in which the comment was made " I would repair this pistol". I just don't have measuring tools and even if I did... you know, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"- I could easily measure at the wrong place. Also too much I don't know about related issues yet... headspace, etc. etc.Maybe I worry too much for a pistol I won't shoot very often ! I know nothing about the "history" of the pistol. S/N is 70sc41xxx- ( Is it likely a new, quality bushing would improve lockup ? ) I appreciate that it is impossible to be an "online" Gunsmith... just looking to generally pick some experienced/SME brains I guess. I would love to take it to range but I don't want to do damage if serious problems exist. Does anyone have suggestions or an approximate idea of what it would cost to get an inspection done ? Thanks for reading this and any assistance.

Great looking pistola ! It is amazing how 1911's can be personalized in so many ways. That's a keeper if it shoots as well as it looks !
-
Yeah, great little pocket protection. Like someone already mentioned- clean & lube it before your range trip.
-
Nice ! Great appreciation gift

Yep, showing same for yours on proofhouse.com 1973 I like the Satin Nickle a lot ... I heard it shows wear quick but I'm sure a light polish makes 'em look new quickly. Is that true ? Show us a pic if you can

Thank you for the offer ! I will be in Alabama for most of next week though. I'm sure I will make it up that way soon though. Mighty kind of you anyway.

I appreciate the info. I have been looking for a good manual. I'm not up that way often but next time I go I will make it a point to look for Larry's Army Navy... I lose myself in those surplus stores... guess we all do. Thank you

Thanks ! I watched an Armorers Course video on Colt 1911's and checked for looseness/gaps/etc. that is sometimes a problem on older "a little too used" pistols and all seems nice fitting and very tight. I would have probably preferred an original blued version but the refinish job was well done. Will make a nice classic gun for my night stand.

Thanks all, That is what I was thinking ... but I wasn't sure about my source and whether or not I was overlooking something. I first became interested in handguns in USMC bootcamp (grew up a long gun hunter only). It was a Colt 1911 of course and I have wanted one ever since but after marriage & children I could just never justify the cost. The price back then for a new Colt 1911 was something like the "astronomical" price of about $400 ! Finally got this one and am happy as a pig rolling in slop. I will now start working on finding a nice old Colt Gov. model... better late than never. Thanks again !
-
Thanks ! I haven't had range time with it yet but it seems to function like it should in general. ANYONE have an educated guess on it's birth year ? 70sc41xxx

Beautiful work ! I have a scroll saw, band saw, router, table saw, and sander... I need to give that a try. Nice eye for wood grain too! Thanks for showing them.
