There are ways to back up the data to a online cloud, though my DVR doesn't have that capability unless I were to manually do it. The still shots, however, all go to an email account immediately, so those are mine forever. As for the DVR box, I have mine in the attic, so it would take a deliberate person with some time on their hands to locate it and take it with them. In regards to the recording schedule, all modern security system DVRs should have the ability to program the record times. I don't really get this, but you can schedule it to record at certain times of the day. I've set up just one camera (the one on my driveway) to record 24/7. The rest record on motion, which saves space in the DVR and makes it easy to locate events when searching through the recordings on the hard drive. With record on motion, the system is set up to "pre-record" several seconds in advance. So the system is constantly recording and dumping memory on the cameras which record on motion only, and when an event happens, it automatically records 3 seconds prior to sensing motion, so that you get the whole scene, not just from the moment it detecting movement.

Interesting theory. That makes sense. Of course, my truck is going on 11 years old and I just broke 50k miles on it. I'm planning on driving it for another 10, then giving it to my son. Hopefully the prices aren't too crazy in 2025.

The cost of video surveillance from alarm companies is outrageous. However, monitoring isn't that bad. Ours is $35/mo, and it's nice that I have someone who will dispatch first responders in case of fire or break in. Also, it's a bonus that the security system is not affected by power outages, and the alerts to the monitoring company are sent over GSM like a cell phone. Anyone wanting to have video surveillance which is available to monitor remotely should just get a security camera DVR. It will do all of that. I can see my cameras on my smart phone as well as on my internet browser, and it sends me still shots when motion is detected at my points of entry. Cameras are cheap too. I just replaced my cameras which were fried by a lightning strike, and the new ones cost $17/ea. Good color cameras too, with IR LEDs, and switches to monochrome when low light is detected. Total cost of a 4 channel camera system with DVR + connectors and wiring was around $200. I'm probably going to upgrade to an 8 channel in the spring, since the lightning strike also fried on of my camera inputs. If I'm gonna get a new DVR, might as well upgrade. ETA: I also run the DVR to one of the inputs on the TV in my living room, so I can switch over from the couch when hearing noises outside, or am waiting on pizza to show up.

I doubt they have anything like that these days. I need a four door though. Being able to haul kids around comfortably in the truck has been awesome.

A liberal question and his response????
TMF replied to bersaguy's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I only snore when I haven't slept for good 24 hours, so that isn't normally a problem. My creepy, heterosexual breathing sounds are made when tight shirts and pajama shorts get broken out. I'm absolutely shameless. -

My wife has told me the same thing. -

ATF Copying 4473 information in bulk

They don't magically scan themselves though. And having used those high speed technologies the government uses to scan things and automatically import it into tables was more trouble than it was worth. Even with the best technology to scan and import all that data "automatically", people still need to do it. Do you know what 20 years worth of gun purchases in the US looks like? I'm not losing sleep over this one either. -

Well, they have to pay a few million analysts to listen in on every single phone call made by gun owners in Texas. Not much left in the budget after that. -
Yah, car salesman are the worst to deal with. I know what I want, I know what my trade in is worth, and I know how much I'm willing to pay. If these criteria are not compatible, we won't have a deal, but they will just keep going in every direction. Don't ever give them your contact info. They'll never leave you alone after you walk out on them.

Sand people refers to the Tusken Raiders, not Jawas, as I understand. ETA: I'm not a Star Wars geek by any means, but this is how I understood the references to "sand people" to be. I always thought that South Park messed that up in Cartman's reference to Jawas being "sand people" and not having souls.

Thoughts? With 100,000,000 new purchases in the past decade, my thoughts would be that they have their work cut out for them if they're going to go through all that paperwork. -
Isn't California a may issue, and it is up to the county? Illinois has a way to go, but they're on the right track. I suspect Chicago is a prime target. What they have going for them is there seems to be two cops on every street corner in the city every time I go there, making response times quick. That is the only deterrent I can think of. I'm still amused by the two ISIS guys that tried this down in Texas. They were in the wrong state.

California is a gun free zone. Each of these plans would have netted them high casualties. They could not have executed these plans in states which shall issue carry permits and yielded a high number of casualties without several people intervening. I said this before the attack, and it remains true: More attacks will happen, and they will happen in states like California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Each time they've tried to do this outside a gun free zone, they've had their attack stopped shortly after starting it.

Christmas trees, holiday trees, and a CBS reporter's observation.
TMF replied to Steelharp's topic in General Chat
I suppose if I lived in Tel Aviv one might wish me "happy Hanukkah". I wouldn't find that arrogant at all, nor would I feel compelled to correct them. Living in a country where the majority of people celebrate Christmas should be enough for folks to expect the assumption that they also celebrate Christmas, without taking offense. Folks just need to chill and focus on the intent and not look for some hidden meaning to find offensive. -
What? The sand people?

Who has ever become offended or accused you of being a bigot for saying "merry Christmas"? I get that political correctness is silly, but no one is telling you that you can't say that. Are you saying you're offended because other people say "happy holidays"? -

Like I said, I've never once had anyone act offended by me saying "merry Christmas" to them, and I say it all the time this time of year. A lot more than 5% of the population don't celebrate Christmas, by the way. That's okay. They don't have to. It's a free country. Just like you're free to say "merry Christmas". I don't see why you and other folks lose their minds if someone else says "happy holidays". Why do you care? -

I haven't encountered anyone yet who gets offended when I wish them a merry Christmas. In fact, almost every service industry employee (for the big corps) will say "happy holidays" to me during this time of year, and it's been this way for at least the past 5 years. I often respond with "merry Christmas"; not because I'm making a point to it, but because that's what I actually mean. I'm sure I've encountered folks who don't celebrate Christmas, but none have ever acted offended that I could tell. However, I see all the time people get offended by people saying "happy holidays". I don't see the issue with it. We are a diverse nation, and although the majority celebrate Christmas, not everyone does. It just makes sense for businesses to water it down and make it non-specific, because not ALL of their customers will celebrate Christmas... like 20% of their customers. I will say, though, not calling them Christmas trees is ridiculous. That's what they are for. Nobody is calling a menorah a "8 candle holder".
