I thought a lower used for a pistol had to be registered as a pistol? Maybe "registered" isn't an appropriate term but you understand what I'm saying, right?

I was much more suspicious regarding the story about Feds investigating the Mormon food storage center. This, however, seems to be of pure intentions for the purpose of gathering information so that Emergency Management officials can develop disaster relief plans better. I guess the best source of information for disaster relief preparedness is to look at past events (Joplin tornado/Katrina/Andrew/Camille/SF earthquake/TN flooding) and the after action reviews conducted by Emergency Managment organizations that responded to such disasters. It sounds to me that the Dept of Health is conducting this survey for the purpose of justifying predparedness efforts; and as we know with government funding, it's hard to get money without doing a study to justify getting the money. Perhaps the manner in which they are carrying out the survey is a little suspect for some of us. I think it would be more cost effective to mail out surveys as opposed to spending man hours getting doors slammed in your face, but maybe they feel putting a face on it to make people more receptive and understanding is the reason they choose that course of action. I don't know, this one just doesn't get the spidey senses up when looking into it. If they came to my house I would probably invite them in to hear what the deal was. If there were any questions that made me uncomfortable answering then I would decline to answer them. On the other hand, there was a story regarding the Mormon food storage facility on that website. If that story is true (it could be made up or exaggerated) then someone at the agency involved should be answering questions on that.

I don't think it matters where these traditions originated, it's for the kids anyway and I'm going to let my kids enjoy it. Banning Santa Claus due to it being a marketing ploy is like not letting your kids trick or treat on Halloween because it's a pagan holiday.... or not getting your wife something on Valentine's Day because it's a BS day made up by the greeting card industry.... neither course of action would go over well. I'd just prefer to let them enjoy it no matter what my feelings are. Santa Claus, Halloween, Valentine's Day, birthdays... it's all for them to enjoy even if I don't get excited about them myself. It makes me happy to see them happy.

Yeah, I fly a lot and you can always fit more in a duffel; when it looks full it seems like I can stuff twice as much in there. You can't do that with hard luggage. The one I have is waterproof which has come in handy in the past. I've never had an issue with items being damaged other than liquids, but I wrap those up pretty good; much better than my wife does. Especially if you have your weapon inside stored in a hard case you will have no issues regarding it getting damaged. I couldn't find mine but this one is similar only mine is waterproof and black. I use the same pistol that I use for general carry. I'm not looking to score big at these events though, so I'm not investing in a speed gun that will otherwise only come out for competitions. If you're going for points then get a pistol designed for that. If you're honing your skills for the purpose of self defense then use the one you carry or use for home defense.

I have a soft North Face duffle with rollers I always travel with. I put my pistol in a hard Kimber case. Even when they sling my bags off an airplane I don't worry. If it's not enough to bust open my toothpaste then it's not enough to damage my pistol in a hard case. I do use a pelican case when flying my rifle though.

How far are you from Guns and Leather? I've used them and they're pretty user friendly.
-
Roger, I know they won't do them for new weapons but they'll do it for used.

Not that I had terrible grades in physics, but I smoked a lot of weed in those days and I think that may have cancelled out my retention of certain formulas regarding inertia.

You made my head hurt.

Tennessee Gun Country was too much? I thought they were around $25. I know that Grandpa's had an outrageous transfer fee years back (the guy at the counter said $100) but I don't know if that was because he was in a bad mood or what. I've never gone back in there to find out.

Those have to be the conversations that make all the pain of being a law enforcement officer worth it.

Ha, as many times as I've been down there I've never checked. I know I'm always going to drink when I'm there!

My Kimber CDP II Compact is the best .45 I own. It is also the only .45 I own. I'm sure a 1911 .45 that costs 1/3 as much will get the job done too. I don't think "best" is a good way to describe a pistol. "Best for you" is probably more appropriate.

This is what I was trying to get across, but being the knuckledragger that I am it was difficult to articulate; thank you for clearing that up for us. I think that is really the debate here, but it's not something that would be resolved on the scene. It would have to be done in a courtroom as a part of either a defense or a lawsuit once the dust has settled. To try and raise a stink from the beginning of the investigation, well, what he said.....

Wow, incredibly infomative. This is neat stuff to know and I'm a little embarassed that I don't. I'm simply familiar with the varying speeds at distance and barrel length, but don't know much in regards to twist. It was green tip (M855) out of a 14.5 barrel. The exit wounds themselves were not symmetrical like a pass through from a 7.62 x 39, but this could also be due to the position of the individual during the engagement and how the trajectory was affected by bone. I've seen a lot more 7.62 x 39 wounds than 5.56, and generally speaking, 5.56 was incredibly devastation in comparison. This could also be due to the fact of the close engagement range and the user, but nonetheless, most 7.62 rounds passed through in a very linear fashion while the 5.56 generally didn't. Another interesting thing to point out in regards to M855 is when fired through a 1:12 it begins tumbling within 25m. I had heard this before but saw it for myself on a range where some of the rounds were impacting the paper sideways. I do feel like I became smarter in regards to my ammo though.

Except the 100m grenade toss into a 3rd story window... they could take that part out.

Opinion: What is the best John Wayne movie of all time?
TMF replied to gunrunner32's topic in General Chat
This is awesome, I just watched Rooster Cogburn last night. I had never seen it before and found out my buddy had a copy of it. I grew up watching John Wayne movies since my grandpa has always been a big fan. I believe that he has every John Wayne movie ever made on VHS. I have to say my favorite is The Longest Day. The historical aspect is the reason I like it so much, not necessarily due to his acting. I'll admit, John Wayne was a hammy actor, but I can't help but love every John Wayne movie I watch. Plus he was such a patriot. You don't see that in Hollywood anymore. -
MS-13 has been doing this for a while from what I understand.

If that was the case then police wouldn't be able to arrest someone who is standing over a dead body, holding a gun in their hand and saying they didn't do it until such point that they got a judge to issue a warrant. If there isn't a witness then there is no reason to take them into custody and no reason to take the weapon, right? Why not just take the shooter's word for it? I think "reasonable" is decided in the courtroom anyway. At the time of seizure there is no arguing with police or putting up a stink. They're going to do what they do, and chances are if you find yourself in a courtroom arguing that the seizure of your personal items (weapon included) without a warrant was a violation of your Constitutional Rights it will be decided that the officers acted appropriately based on the circumstances (the dead body full of holes or claw hammer sticking out their head).

Hmmm, that seems like a big waste. Kinda like forcing yourself to buy a Porche because you already have Porche seat covers. I guess I wouldn't put it past the government procurement system though. So would a regular BH 77gr perform well out to distance in a 1:9?
-
Yeah, the last scene in Way of the Gun was pretty good. I watched that movie just because of the last scene... and of course the first scene!

Any insight as to why standard military M4 rifles are all 1:7 then? I've seen wounds sustained at 150-250ish with green tip that left pretty knarly exit wounds; it didn't seem like there was any issue burning through at that range. A few years back everyone started using 77 grain BH and now that seems to be the cool flavor, but I never really looked into performance. I just figured heavier round = better put down power at close range. Either way, no one is walking away from a couple rounds of 5.56 to the torso area no matter what the weight or twist, but I'm curious to hear if there is a good reason other than general contract purposes for why the military has stuck w/ 1:7 for so long if the wounding capabilities aren't as good as 1:9.

+1. I used to park in that area before the flood and never had issues. The walk isn't bad at all either using that footpath that goes between the two and through a rear entrance to Opryland. Of course there was always lots of foot traffic between the parking lot and Opryland (even late at night) so it felt pretty safe, but I don't know what it looks like now. Is Opry Mills/Dave and Busters on that side even open yet?
