No profession is immune from people doing stupid things. The story carries an extra tragic connotation to it because he was a SEAL, however, if he was some drunk Billy-Bob from the backwoods who shot himself not many of us would have much sympathy. He should have known better (not because he was a SEAL, because he was an adult who owned firearms). Unfortunately he won't have the opportunity to learn from his mistake.

One in the chamber a no-go at Bass Pro...
TMF replied to deerslayer's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Eh, I had a paint guy at Lowes tell me I don't need to have my primer tinted. I just nod and continue with what I was going to do anyway. If they want to be ignorant, let 'em. It's only gonna irritate you that they won't listen. -
Roger, I thought you meant without PC. As a taxpayer and father/husband I would think that it is reasonable to pull someone over after leaving a bar if they appear drunk, and that's what I want my community officers to do. Not everyone that leaves a bar is drunk, but it's somewhat obvious the ones that do. Having left plenty of bars drunk before, I know what a drunk guy looks like and I assume most LEOs do too.

Pumps are cheaper normally. Some people just aren't interested in investing a bunch of money in something they may not use much. I have a nice pump I picked up new for less than $200. It shoots every time and is just as comfortable to fire as most all other pumps.

It's entrapment to pull over a drunk after witnessing them stumble out of a bar (an area known for drunks)? By that logic it should be entrapment to pull someone over in an area known for speeders. Breaking the law is breaking the law no matter where you do it.

Not enough information to start condemning the actions of the responding officer(s). Some things are cut and dry, but in the heat of the moment mistakes can be made by even the best trained individuals. Maybe a 4th grader will write a follow up story and shed more light on the subject than what we have here.

Turn In Your Neighbor for Illegal Gun
TMF replied to Oh Shoot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Foreign troops? I dunno, gun control didn't work too well in Iraq and they didn't even have a Constitution or a sense of national pride. I'm not losing sleep over the thought of limp-wristed European blue helmets. -
Run your mouth and get punched. Don't see the problem here.

AP is reporting that the shooter was a former soldier (94-98). I'll be interested to see more information about this. I remember not too long ago a SWAT team assaulted the house of a Marine that ended up being the wrong house. The Marine defended himself and was killed in the process. Don't know if that happened here, but I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt before labeling him as veteran that snapped... the media will handle that part just fine.

I don't think that under-reporting from the media is race related at all. When this first started happening it made all the major news outlets. Since then it has happened quite often apparently. It's not a shocker anymore, and therefore, no longer considered national news that will keep people tuned in. Trying to find something sinister here is no different than Jesse Jackson trying to find the "white devil" responsible for inventing crack and distributing to the poor black communities. Smash and grab burglaries used to be big news when folks started plowing stolen vehicles into store fronts. That happens all the time now. No longer considered news.

If I received 100 million because my wife cheated on me I would probably do something stupid with a good portion of my money. It may not involve destroying a mansion, but would be frivilous nonetheless... probably something involving two chicks, a lifetime supply of Jack Daniels and more weed than Willie Nelson... not that I've daydreamed about it or anything.

That won't stop me from defending my family, my property or myself. What happens afterward is irrelevant to what is going on at the time I'm being victimized. -

That was fun. Next topic: Cyclists v. Motorists ....... aaaaaaaaaaaannnnnd GO! -
Then how on earth was he able to shoot 5 people? Wouldn't he obey the law?? I don't understand!!!

Well in this instance it was a LEO that intervened. I'm not going to risk life/injury protecting a private business, however, I'm also not going to stand by and let an innocent be killed/injured by a criminal. At this point it is difficult to determine what exactly happened. The article might as well have been written in crayon since it leaves out any detail or explanation of what may have happened. I interpret it to be the ATF agent attempted to subdue the robber and was shot (along with the criminal) while scuffling on the ground. At this point, however, who knows? The AP needs to start vetting their stories before publishing them.

FEMA Document (Pulled!) on the Coming Lockdown

Most officers I knew when I was in always had a Constitution/Bill of Rights quick reference guide on them at all times. I know a couple of them were VMI grads. I'm not sure if that is something that is required while they're cadets, but some of those officers were religious about having it on them... even downrange. I agree, the jack booted thugs that are going to throw you in jail under Obama's orders would be the combat arms units of our Army and Marines (Infantry/SF/Cav/Marine Band). Anyone here that has ever served in such a unit would immediately recognize that this is something that would never happen. I remember seeing a poll in the Army Times during the 2008 election which had polled the percentage of combat arms personnel that were voting for McCain rather than Obama... it was over 80 percent. If that is not enough proof to those here that our military still swings to the right of center.... well... if the tinfoil hat fits... -
A shame indeed. It's hard really to point fingers on this one. He was a LE agent himself; maybe not organizationally obligated to intervene but some could argue "ethically" obligated. The responding officer obviously interpreted the situation incorrectly, but when you only have a split second to make a decision stuff like this can happen.

Hopefully he froze to death; that doesn't seem like it would be a pleasant way to go. He deserved a lot worse.
