Got pulled over this morning with handgun in vehicle
TMF replied to 93civEJ1's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
It traffic stop happened long before I was even able to get a HCP... I was 19ish. I'm not overly nuts about it since I'm sure it could be argued in the court of public opinion that I gave consent to search, it was just an inconvenience and I didn't like being treated like some kind of criminal threat just for speeding. It was simply a thought provoking experience I wanted to bring up in conjunction with TGO member stories of having their weapons confiscated and run on routine stops. It's more of "right" vs "wrong" and why question. I'm not much of a legal expert, but it just seemed to me after my personal experience and the experiences mentioned by others that this is something in common practice but doesn't seem (to me) to pass the sniff test. -

I don't think that speeding alone is reasonable suspicion to have your personal effects confiscated until the LEO determines that they aren't stolen. These are the cases I'm referring to that I've seen posted. -

The point I was making is you can't do any of this without probable cause. Just because you see high dollar items in a vehicle doesn't mean you get to start taking serial numbers to see if it's stolen, or hold someone on suspicion of being a criminal simply for having expensive stuff. When I was pulled over it was for speeding, and I did give the officer permission to search the vehicle after I informed him there was a rifle in the car. I guess my consent was implied when he took the weapon back to his vehicle to run the numbers, so I'm not bitching about that. The point I'm bringing up is that I've seen here posted before that members have had their weapons temporarily confiscated during traffic stops where the officer went back to run the numbers. It doesn't seem that would pass the 4A sniff test. I'm not asking for the purpose of what will hold up in court and what won't if it come back stolen, I'm asking about normal, law abiding citizens showing no suspicous behavior or fitting a description that would give an LEO PC to search. It just seems to me that there is a consensus that taking private property to check if it's stolen (when there is no PC to believe that it is) is somehow okay. -
My wife shot one mag through my compact 1911 and was done with it. She gravitated toward the Sig 226. I got her a smaller Keltec P-11 and she digs that more than any of them.

Check here: campellyardsales.com Go under the "Military Items" for sale. There's so many joes selling off stuff as they get out or PCS.

many DOD contractors and companies buy it commercially all the time. I know of contractors that go online and purchase and are reimbursed for the cost, and the stuff they have is level 4 stand alone body armor. I can't imagine there are laws against it if so many people are doing it.

Why stop there? Why not run serial numbers on other high-dollar items in the vehicle? If you see an iPod docked in the car why not check that? If you see a laptop in the backseat why not check the serial number on that? Good people end up with stolen laptops and such too. -

That's not what I'm talking about. The only time I had a weapon taken and serial numbers run were when transporting a rifle in a closed case with no ammo in the vehicle. I'm talking about probable cause. There is no probable cause to believe ANY items of my vehicle are stolen, and it's not illegal to transport a firearm... I didn't need a permit to do what I was doing. Seeing a laptop/iPod/rifle case in plain sight is not probable cause to suspect me of doing/having anything illegal. What I'm asking is whether or not running a s/n without consent to search on a normal traffic stop is a violation, and if it is why is it done so often? I've seen it posted here many times that people had their weapons run. -

Taking any property from me (home or not) and running serial numbers to see if it's stolen without probable cause is unconstitutional. The fact it is a firearm shouldn't matter, especially if the firearm is stored in a legal manner (which is how mine was stored when I was pulled over and had the number on my rifle checked). If it's not unconstitutional to run serial numbers on personal property to see if it's stolen what's to keep an officer from confiscating my iPod/laptop/phone to see if it's stolen? -

Criminals are mostly opportunist cowards. Simply pulling a weapon in self-defense would be enough to see a**holes and elbows from the lot of them... they ain't willing to die for it. -

Hahaha, perhaps, but the girls fell for it every time! That's what sucks about being married... they only fall for it once.

I remember stories from old Vietnam era SF vets who worked closely with CIA guys during the war. They didn't talk very highly of them... the stories I heard were dismissive "young guys in over their head" type stories, but I remember one story in which the old guy made mention of "carrying around his shiny pistol like he was a cowboy" or something to that effect. Somehow I doubt this is one of those pistols.

Science Proves it! Right-wingers are racists/of low intelligence
TMF replied to TMF's topic in General Chat
The manner in which the data was collected is suspect to me. What is considered to be racist/prejudiced/homophobic is subjective. They reference part of the study done in the UK regarding questions about opinions on homosexuals. Well, a liberal might think my opinion on homosexuals is homophobic, although I don't have anything against gays... I just think the mechanics are gross and I don't get it. I don't think that's homophobic in the same way I don't think it's wrong to be grossed out by someone who likes to eat brussel sprouts. I don't care for either, but I don't care if someone else does so long as I'm not involved. I think liberals would classify me as homophobic because of that. It's very easy for them to skew the data in how they judge the answers to the questions they ask in the surveys. Hell, for years my wife accused me of being racist because I don't use the term "African-American"; I say "black" instead. I don't think that's anymore racist than calling someone white. It's taken her years to accept that. So I think the data here isn't reliable; it's completely subjective. -
Hmmm... I used to do that to the popcorn bag at the movies in my younger days.... never the potato chip bag though.

While I don't doubt that lower intelligence can contribute to racism and other prejudices, but this article suggests that the liberals were right it making the (prejudiced) assumption that right-wingers are racists. Cliff notes: People of lower intelligence gravitate toward right-wing ideals, therefore, conservative movements are populated by racists. I'm glad they got this study done before the election this year.. ya know, so the left can say that if you don't vote for Obama you're a racist. Oh, and for those of us who supported Herman Cain... yeah, were racists too. Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice - Yahoo! News

The only thing I enjoy about MMA are the actual fights. Everything else (to include the idiot culture it's inspiring) is like nails on a chalkboard.

Eh, the $3 dollar bill ain't out yet... when it is I'll pay with that one. -
Oh wow, I guess it's been a long time since my guard days. There was no entry control point or anything like that... just a local gym with an armory attached to it. I guess after 9/11 things may have changed a bit. I guess if you get the Comany Commander's approval (or whoever runs the NG Armory) it'd be fine.
-
When I was in the guard we weren't allowed to have personal weapons at the armory as I understood the rules.... however, our Company 1SG owned a local gunshop so that rule was violated constantly. If I were you I'd leave it in the car.

The UFC promotes things such as Tapout gear, Axe body spray, Affliction shirts, sideways hats, malt liquor, crappy energy drinks, neo-nazi t-shirt companies, Spike TV ........ AND Joe Rogan?????? All this and they want to ban gun sponsors. No longer is the UFC flypaper for douchebags, but now it's flypaper for PC douchebags.
