Enlighten Me: Why all the love for suppressors?
TMF replied to CapnVideo's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
I already have a nice 1911. I don't have a quiet one though. Really it just boils down to having another fun item without much function. I only have a couple weapons that serve a function. A shotgun for recreation, pistol for carry and a rifle for in case I end up in a Kevin Costner movie. Everything else is fun stuff. If you ain't into it then you ain't into it. Some of us would have flame throwers if we could. Does that serve a practical purpose. If "awesome" was practical then yes. Otherwise just big kids having fun. -
Father kills man after catching him sexually abusing his daughter

Yep, just crossing "t"s and dotting "i"s I think. What a waste of time to try to charge him. No Texas jury would convict him, ever. -

I thought they said they would send it to a grand jury from the get-go. -
Good stuff. This might irritate the situation but it seems like this guy is bent on confrontation. Might as well go on the offensive instead of always being on your heels. What surprises me is how LE just shrugs it off. Obviously this guy is unbalanced, and these situations sometimes end very badly. You'd figure LE would want to make it clear that aggressive acts will be addressed swiftly and decisively. The fact that they aren't is just making this whacko more brazen, and may lead to him making a step over the line that ends in a deadly encounter. I really hope the best for your parents. This guy sounds like a cowardly POS.

Why do I have 20 firearms? I only have two hands. Answer: because I can. -

That's understandable. I don't have any hatred towards those that tried to kill my buddies and I or the bad guys that were successful at it. My hatred was for those that intentionally targeted civilians. But then again, that was an open conflict. I would feel differently about an unprovoked attack such as the one in Beirut. In my experience I've fought those that I respect as well as those I had no respect or empathy for. The line was drawn at honor. I have no tolerance for a lack of it from the enemy or from our side. -

Oh yeah, if this Mosque is found to have real ties to terrorist activities I'd be the first to be calling a representative to have it shut down. I just don't like the idea of folks trying to curtail a citizen's rights. That is what this lawyer is all about. From what I see this Mosque has been a part of the community for 30 years. Now that the second and third generation folks are here they need a bigger Mosque because they can't fit into the old one. All sounds reasonable to me. What has suddenly changed? No one was outraged about the existence of this Mosque for 30 years; now it is suddenly a problem. Aside from that we can debate the validity of Islam and how it breeds extremism all day. Whether we agree or not I think that when it comes to rights we should be looking at it as objectively as possible. Like I said, I classify Islam right there with Scientology. -

Ask the 16 Muslim women and children that were murdered in their homes by an American Soldier what they think about tolerance. The actions of a few don't speak for the other billion. If that is logical then it is also logical to take away your permit to carry when a HCP holder goes on a shooting spree. -

That is like saying that anyone who attends Berkely is automatically a liberal. I can tell you that isn't true. Dealing in absolutes leaves no room for open mindedness. Secondly, I've done plenty of research. I can't count how many country studies I've had to go through in addition to objective books I've read. That is on top of learning Arabic and spending time in at least 7 different Muslim countries totaling nearly 4 years. I don't know what qualifies as "research" to you but I'd say I got it covered. You don't have to agree with me but you should at least recognize that I know what I'm talking about. -

Neither do I. I've spent nearly 4 years of my life living in Muslim countries so I've seen my share of things associated with the religion that I don't want to see here. I've also have had the opportunity to meet, interact and live with more Muslims than 99% of folks here will ever meet in their life. My take, there are good and bad people in all cultures. What we want out of life and our priorities are pretty much the same: family, God, freedom, and a place to enjoy all those things. I'm not gonna stand up and sing kumbaya or anything; I have nothing against anyone that agrees/disagrees with Islam or do I care about Muslim rights outside of our borders. I just am offering insight into my experience with Muslims which is more than any of he folks here that denounce it as a religion that REQUIRES anti-American sentiment. I can tell you that the Quran and the hadiths don't reject American ideals anymore than the Old Testament, and most Muslims that weren't enemy either embrace or would love to embrace the freedoms we enjoy. With that said, anyone who is an American citizen is a fellow American to me no matter their religion or political beliefs. To see a fellow American have their rights called into question because of their beliefs makes me very concerned for our country. Just as concerned as a bedwetter wanting to have the law take my guns away. -

So when a self proclaimed Catholic bombs an abortion clinic they aren't Catholic, but when a Muslim blows up girls school he is absolutely a Muslim? I'm not following the logic. -
Well, chances are it'll be him since he's driving a Corolla. When that semi driver doesn't see him it's all over.

I was trying to figure that out too. The only thing I could figure is that it was a racially motivated comment suggesting that the towns he was visiting were mostly white. It would be the same as pointing out any time Barack Obama goes to a mostly black community as something sinister. Neither is appropriate, especially for a "journalist". Once again, if this was reversed there would be national outrage and the Secret Service would be soliciting the hookers in Bill O'Reilly's home town.

Maybe he should paint an orange vest on it so other motorist can see him better!

Most Muslims would argue that Islamic extremists are not real Muslims the same as you arguing Mcveigh wasn't a real Christian. I've heard hundreds of Muslims tell me that the extremists are not real Muslims. I don't think that every time Islam is bashed that Christianity has to be bashed in turn, but it is going to be compared to make a point that extremism is not something that exists only in Islam. I concede that there is a huge problem within the Muslim world in regards to fostering extremism, but that has to do with socioeconomic factors going on in that region of the world more than the religion itself. High unemployment, low education, low standard of living generally results in a violent subculture within males of a certain age group. We have he same problem in this country. So does Mexico and Colombia. The difference is that extremists are exploiting that. Blame the big/little Satan for the woes of the poor Muslims. Sprinkle a little indoctrination on top then direct them to a recruiter. Now you got yourself a holy warrior. By no means does that excuse our enemies; we should seek to eliminate their means through any resources we have to include removing them from the Earth. But that doesn't lump any and all Muslims into that category. What do you think they think about you? Early on in the war many of the enemy I met really thought I/we were crusaders looking to forcibly convert their communities to Christianity. Some thought we were resettling Jews in Baghdad. They really believed this. This is what they were told and what motivated them to fight us; hate for something that didn't really exist. I don't really blame them for thinking that.... I mean, we had guns, tanks and Apaches. What would you think the intentions would be of a Muslim army showing up on our shores with guns, tanks and attack helicopters? The (very) few Muslims that move here and become US citizens aren't even armed and you have this fear of them overtaking our culture. Now, who is the one with the more irrational fear; the insurgents I mentioned above or you? -
Wow, your parents have it way worse than me. Document everything. Wouldn't hurt to hire an independent investigator in regards to the booby traps and such around the property. If this guy is caught in the act or there is good enough evidence to link him to this aggressive behavior he will lose all credibility for every legal issue from then on out. A little physical and technical surveillance from an investigator might just turn something like that up. Especially now that this guy is getting froggier by the day. Sounds like this guy belongs behind bars.

+ a bunch I've had similar neighbor problems that resulted in a few police visits and the neighbor being charged. As much as I have wanted to "handle it", my level headed wife has been the voice of reason. We have a packet we keep full of court documents, police reports, witness statements and letters from the a-hole. It all came in handy the last time the cops came around. Haven't heard a peep out of him in over a year now. When I do he'll get another LE spanking and potentially a harassment lawsuit and restraining order. I'm guessing he doesn't want either since he's been good lately. The moral high ground has better fields of fire.

Know your operational environment. With the exception of the military, I've never worked anywhere that it was commonplace to search an employee's vehicle. If it was I wouldn't want to work there. If that is the sort of place you work then you'll have to make a risk v reward decision. I'd say keep it in your car in one of those small gunvault safes if you're concerned about it being stolen. I just bought one for my wife's bedside. They're cheap and nice.

Looks like I'm in the market for a 15-22 upper.

Ok, I misunderstood and thought you meant a bug out for the zombie apocalypse. I only keep a tourni in the truck. I figure for all other injuries there'd be about a thousand first responders on the scene in minutes in response to a shooting. All my sexy med gear is collecting dust in a tuff box.

I'll be a half wit. I'm not here defending anyone; Dolomite is a big boy I'm sure and can defend himself. I just have a pet peeve which happens to be folks that go out of their way to say they can't say something because it's classified/confidential/secret/TS. I rank that up there with folks that claim combat exploits that aren't true or are a gross exaggeration. It gets under my skin and so I can't help but throw up the BS flag. Beyond that I'm just amused by your first and second post on the thread lobbing accusations then saying you don't have time to back it up. It makes the answer here pretty evident. If you weren't prepared to back up your claim you shouldn't have posted the thread in the first place. What did you think was going to happen?

+ 1 on building your own. I would say that you'd be better off having a kit suited for the less sexy stuff since you're likely not going to need it in a SHTF scenario. I guess what I mean is if you have large bore needles for the purpose of decompressing a tension pneumothorax, or an asherman chest seal to treat the same injury you're wasting space and money. I mean, in a SHTF scenario, if you have a hole through your chest wall you will not live without proper treatment anyway. I'd even stay away from the quick clot stuff too. That isn't designed to stay inside of you; stuffing with curlex and putting a pressure dressing on will work better. These "assaulter" kits are designed as a bandaid for life threatening injuries that require care at a higher facility. Trauma shears, curlex, cohesive bandages, splints, tourniquet, alcohol, bacitracin, scalpel.... stuff like that to treat things you might actually live from. Pretty much a standard first aid kit with some additions to treat major injuries. Think hard about he stuff you think you might/could treat in that scenario and put the kit together yourself.

I would tell you but it's classified. If I tell you I'm on double secret probation.
