  1. Oh, I assumed you were talking about pistol. I keep the shotty and a pistol for home defense. All the rifles are locked up. I live in a neighborhood, so I wouldn't feel comfortable using my long gun knowing those rounds are going to burn through walls with ease.
  2. 19 year olds can legally drink in Canada. Somehow their country hasn't fallen apart for it. Allowing Servicemembers to drink before they're 21 is not about reward, it's about respect. Yeah, joes do stupid stuff, but they do it with or without the laws. Just think, when an 18 year old shows up to his platoon, you think that the older Soldiers wouldn't buy beer for him? Absolutely they do. The only thing that would change is they would be allowed to drink in bars. That's it.
  3. There is a reason there aren't battered men's shelters.
  4. .... [in Norm McDonald voice].... or so the Germans would have you believe....
  5. If insulated by walls the kids' ears will be fine. Even in homes with concrete walls it isn't that bad unless you're in the room. The standard pistol calibers (9mm, .40, .45) aren't that bad indoors. You won't notice how loud it is when you shoot it in the moment and it probably won't do any permanent damage. The magnum calibers might and the rifle calibers certainly will in addition to blinding you with muzzle flash. But, like I said, you won't notice the noise in the moment.
  6. The way you carry yourself. Besides, you live in Clarksville; you'd look out of place if you didn't have tats.
  7. Right on. I grudgingly switched one of my SWS over to a PAS-13 since those times of the month with real low illum I couldn't see jack through the PVS-22. I tell ya, after putting that PAS-13 on there I was a believer. Not great for daytime compared to having an M3A, but I felt like I owned the night for anything within 500m. Zeroing was the big pain since you had to get close to activate the eye cup, which caused the thing to smack you in the forehead every shot.
  8. I've had them a few times for rentals. Last time was 2009. I'm 5' 10'' 175 lb and found it to be a little too compact... maybe it was the ergonomics of it, but even when backed off from the steering wheel my knees were touching the dash underneath. Perhaps they've changed it on the newer models. I'd test drive it with the car seats in there to get a feel for it.
  9. Wait, this is 2006 and you were still sportin' a PVS 10 on your M24? Didn't get the new bling yet sarge?
  10. I thought those were a Range Control myth until I almost hit one with a 15 pax van on the way to El Paso. Those are large animals.
  11. Unfortunately there are more people on this thread than there are snipers using .338 Lapua in combat. 7.62 x 51 is still the industry standard, however, by 2005 we had Remmy 700s in .300 winmag downrange. The trajectory was noticably flatter and wind calls were cut significantly.
  12. It's been a while but I remember adding a hold for spin drift at 800m. If you're factoring coriolis then you're not a sniper, you're doing it for sport. I wouldn't bet my life or give away my position trying to hit a target past 800m. Unless it's an environment where it doesn't matter, like a firefight, but then I would just make adjustments based on the first round which isn't scientifc and doesn't require calculation.
  13. Ha, yeah the scrub and the tin huts gave it away. I spent a little time down there. If you were like me, you took advantage of the training value of all those jack rabbits. Best moving target training in the area. After a few days there that answered the question as to why the coyotes were so damn big. I saw one so big it looked like a mangy wolf!
  14. Hmmm.... these pics look very familiar..,... Dona Ana I'm guessing?
  15. Well, he was also 21 years old. He may have been saving up for the class or have already submitted paperwork. I would call this one 2 mins in the box, offsetting minors for the two parties involved. I'm sure he wasn't arrested just because of OCing. The article mentions that his family got involved and began arguing. Who knows how it escalated from there, but since a bystander got involved and assisted in subduing the arrested party, I'm guessing he wasn't playing nice. The cop needs re-education on the laws. Either way, I wouldn't be caught throwing support behind this guy without the whole story. Good chance he might not turn out to be squeaky clean.
  16. I'm simply not wasting my time Googling tin foil blogs. I prefer facts.
  17. No, it isn't a qualifier, but I believe it to be a disqualifier. A 400 lb fat woman can be trained to shoot targets at 1 km. The inability or lack of skill to engage targets long range I believe to be a disqualifier. Like I said, anyone here is fully capable of taking out midrange targets with any WWII rifle not manufactured in France. But, this is just my opinion based on my experience and understanding.
  18. They were in an urban environment. Not too many places to take long distance shots, especially with the lines being so intermixed.
  19. I give them plenty of respect, but like you said, they had neither the training or equipment for long range precision. Their low power optics were fine for the targets they were hitting which were under 200m and I'd venture to guess that the majority were less than 100m. I would say that their task was certainly more dangerous than modern day snipers, considering their proximity to the enemy and limited egress in an urban environment, but I don't consider it to be different than a task of a designated marksman. Don't mistake my opinion for a lack of respect, because it isn't. I have a great deal of respect for what they did.
  20. Considering how most people understand the concept of a "sniper" it would be revolutionary to explain descriptions of pooping into an MRE bag for several days or crawling for several hours just to make it a few hundred meters. Since folks are educated by Hollywood and the media on the capabilities and role of a sniper, most believe that normal shots are made from 900m while aiming at the center of the forehead... ya know, since all scopes are 500x magnification and real snipers don't worry about silly things like wind, gravity, spin drift or the vacuum margin for error that comes with a 1 MOA gun. To answer the OP's question, I think the term "sniper rifle" is subjective. I believe it means different things to different people. For me, I relate the weapon to the role of a military sniper. This would require that the weapon be of precision and capable of performing reliably at distances greater than 300m while having the ability to kill or severely wound at those distances. In addition, the weapon would need to be rugged enough to withstand the abuse one would expect during military activities such as airborne/maritime/air assault operations, stalks and exposure to the elements. Certainly there are plenty of long range weapons systems out there that are precision in nature, but I wouldn't dare use as a sniper rifle because they are impractical as military rifles. However, those same rifles might do just fine for a law enforcement agency that would use the weapon primarily for standoffs or event overwatch. So that is my subjective opinion of it as it relates to military sniper weapons systems. Of course, the term "sniper" itself is subjective as well. The above referenced Soviet sniper of WWII wouldn't so much fit my opinions of what a sniper is. It would fit my description of a dedicated marksman. Those kills were all done in an urban environment amongst conventional forces, not much different than dedicated marksman of WWI during trench warfare. These shots were not taken at great distances, and, therefore, didn't require the skills necessary for long range precision shooting. Most folks here could easily nail human sized targets with any WWII rifle at distances of 200m or less, which is the range of the kills. The reason these Soviet snipers racked up numbers so quick and dramatically was due to the target rich environment they were set in. A little knowledge of concealment techniques and exploiting the urban landscape during hours of limited visibility is what kept them alive. They didn't even need much patience as the rate they were killing Germans showed that they weren't in any one position for very long. Not trying to detract from the brave deeds they did for the sake of their country, but my understanding and definition of sniper does not fit that category. Kinda like the press labeling the halfwit DC beltway shooter as the "DC Sniper". He wasn't a sniper. The shots he made weren't difficult. I could have had the same effect on target with a muzzle loader. They called him a sniper because he fired from concealment, usually once. That was it. Hardly fits my definition of sniper. I guess what I'm saying is, having the ability to put someone in your sights and squeeze a trigger does not a sniper make. At least in my opinion.
  21. The only people I make an effort to determine if they are carrying are folks who look like they are up to no good like folks dressed like gang members, drug addicts or just plain suspicious people. The folks I've noticed who are carrying have been noticed simply by accident, as in they just happen to print or catch a glimpse of a holster as I'm looking in that direction. Doesn't happen often. I don't care to be observant of normal looking folks who may or may not being carrying.
  22. Police have been "beating and arresting" Ron Paul delegates? Where did this happen? The entire article is discredited for having just blatant lunacy in there.
  23. Exactly. I would be very forgiving if given the opportunity. It might sound crazy to some, but if it were me I wouldn't be looking to punish the PD in this case. Clearly it was not the intent of the officer to shoot a defenseless person. I'd let them do their investigation and would only expect reimbursement for medical and time off, if not covered by work. But, the second they go to the press and try to discredit me, it would be on. I'd get the slickest lawyer and sue them into the ground. What a bunch of bafoons. She didn't do anything wrong here. They shouldn't be giving her a hard time.
  24. Simple reasoning. If this were such a big deal this wouldn't be the first thread about someone being institutionalized. It just so happens that thousands of these cases happen every year and only this one stands out. This is because of his anti-gov statements. The articles supporting him all focus on that aspect. How about he is a lunatic? Let's focus on that first, and worry about the government reading my thoughts next.
  25. In that case I'm sure they'll find a history of bozo antics. I would like to believe there is an excuse for this one but there isn't an immediately reasonable explanation. At any rate, the PD should be accepting responsibility, not trying to discredit the claims of an unarmed woman that was shot on her own property. The cop should be punished based on the outcome of the investigation. The Public Information Officer should be fired and replaced with someone that isn't a moron.
