7 year old boy shot dead outside gun store.

Your first paragraph and last paragraph are in conflict, Robert. I'm sorry you feel insulted. I prefer to be direct with my comments as opposed to making passive aggressive remarks aimed at folks. That kinda stuff is what chicks do so that they can elicit a certain response and play the victim. At any rate, perhaps tomorrow you can put on your thick skin when you wake up and not get your feewings hurt as easily. -
Disarmed in a traffic stop

Sure. I wouldn't lie or not cooperate with an officer. It isn't about rights, more about respect and politeness. I guess I also don't have anything to hide, so I am not worried about incriminating myself. That video posted is good advice to someone who has illegal items or wants a ticket. In some states you can be taken to jail for going 20 mph over. That officer could have simply arrested him and impounded the car. Having been in that situation before I was very polite and cooperative which resulted in the officer knocking 10 mph off my ticket, thus greatly reducing the cost. This was when I was a teenager and had every reason to get hammered for speeding. I've walked away from many pull overs with no ticket or searches just because I was cooperative and respectful. I'll teach my kids to do the same. -

I can start by never pointing a weapon at a child, or pulling the trigger of a weapon unless it is pointed in a safe direction. I can start there. I'm pretty sure I've been able to make it through life never having done this and have no plans of doing it in the future. Is that so revolutionary that you're saying not everyone has the capacity to do this? I've trained half-wit, illiterate, uneducated booger-eating Arabs how to do this with pretty good success. Anyone that can't is a moron and shouldn't be handling weapons. This isn't advanced level stuff, Robert. Perhaps for you, but not me. -

That is not the preferred technique. -

Exactly, I realize that it can happen to me, which is why I have taken many steps since my kids have come along to prevent accidents from happening. Furthermore, making the decision to place your finger on a trigger or have a firearm (loaded or unloaded) pointed toward a child is not a mistake I choose to make. In fact, I couldn't even classify that as a mistake. That is classified as gross negligence in my book. Perhaps you read from a different book, and that's your business, but do not project your own negligent tendencies to the whole of the rest of us. I will not have such a thing happen because I recognize the possibility of a tragedy occurring if I don't make the steps to prevent it. -
I think it attracts way too much attention for the type of war they're fighting. But still, there are better ways for them to employ that remote weapon system. That is something that could do some damage to dismounts from a concealed position with the operator being offsite with a quick egress route.

Multiple males in a vehicle late at night could be a pretty good reason to feel it necessary to disarm; I get that. But as a SOP for every stop is clearly not the intention of the law. I'm not arguing with a cop over it, but I would still be concerned about someone unfamiliar with my weapon taking it and unloading it. Not every LEO is a weapons expert. -
I don't disagree with you in regard to caliber efficiency in regard to 9mm vs .45, but I carry 8+1 in my EDC 1911 and I feel that is sufficient enough. The way I carry it is more concealable and comfy than my G19, plus I'm a bit quicker with it and more accurate. If I can't solve a problem in 9 rounds or less I have bigger problems than what I can solve on my own. .45 does make bigger holes, but I agree it doesn't make a bad guy any more incapacitated compared to a 9mm if shot placement is good. If my EDC 1911 was in 9mm I'd probably like it better due to better round capacity and lighter recoil. But I gots what I gots, and I'm cool with that. The folks who say it won't work after a 9 hour gun fight on the beaches of Normandy may be right, but I just need to go to Krogers to get some Cheetos and beer. I'm sure I'll be fine. We should do this in a 1911 thread. I feel guilty about pushing Douchy McDoucherson's name up to the top again.

I guess if I carried 400 rounds of ammo for my self defense pistol, a 1911 would not be my first choice. However, somehow I've managed to get through at least 300 rounds in a day of shooting without malfunction, so I'm pretty confident that my 1911 can survive through the two mags I carry if it ever came down to it. The argument that 1911s are not reliable for carry is just stupid. 99% of shooters will never be good enough to shoot to the accuracy capabilities of their pistol, and no one can carry the amount of ammo necessary to foul up a 1911 to the point of malfunction.

Yeah, sometimes I leave the toilet seat up and forget to roll the windows up on my truck. I've never had an ND or exposed my kid to a life threatening danger. I know, crazy. I must be in the minority. Having an ND into a child is a pretty big effing deal. That isn't a mistake; that is a catastrophic failure that is inexcusable. -
Some of them dudes still sport RPKs. I'm pretty sure a 7.62x39 AP round would penetrate that hull too.

I know a mechanical device can fail, but a trigger can't pull itself, and a striker fired weapon can't cock and fire itself. A lock in my house can fail, but the doorknob can't turn itself. My car can fail but it can't start on its own. The notion that guns can go off on their own is false and lunacy because it is something that is perpetuated so much despite being a falsehood. In all my experience around firearms, the only time I've witnessed a firearm discharge itself was when the trigger assembly fell out of a M249 machine gun, but even then it was operator failure because the operator did not properly check his weapon and failed to notice a missing retention pin. -
Pretty neat from an ingenuity stand point. From a practicality standpoint, that is a lot of work invested into a contraption that will be chewed apart by one AP belt from a PKC. That remote weapon system set up would be better served from a static ambush position with the operator off site. Very low tech and can be sacrificed and replicated easily.

It is truly a tragic story, and I can't imagine what the father is going through, but the fact remains that there is no acceptable explanation for how this happened. The laws of physics are what they are. Bullets fly generally straight out of a gun barrel, and firing pins don't smack primers unless a mechanical action tells them to do so. This puts the blame squarely in his hands, and the only logical explanation is gross negligence. It isn't that I don't empathize with the horror this father is feeling, but the notion that the gun "just went off" is absolute lunacy. -
Someone comes on my property and shoots my dog I'm thinking I'd be feeling like I had a reasonable belief that I was in danger of death or serious, bodily injury regardless of what kind of outfit the dog killer was wearing. I mean, what reason would I have to believe that the psycho was going to stop with my dog?
Well according to the owner she went outside to see what had happened and the officer just apologized to the woman and called his supervisor to come out. Apparently this guy requires adult supervision when playing cops and robbers. If it were me I would not be interested in a settlement; I would only be interested in seeing the officer fired.

I've run into folks that don't feel comfortable doing this although it is totally legal. It is how I prefer since I don't have to pay a ridiculous transfer fee. It drives me nuts to get soaked with a transfer fee and TICS fee if I don't have to.
Works on some dogs, but not all. I have one and it works great on my dog. Our neighbors tried it with their dog and the dog just ran through it, so they built a real fence.
If it doesn't work you can pair it with a good e-collar to drive the point home, it just requires more work. Any way to avoid killing a dog over a human mistake.
-
Suggest to the owners putting in an underground fence. For a few hundred bucks it will save their dogs' lives. I'd be real hesitant to shoot my neighbor's dogs without making it clear that the onus is on them to prevent their dogs from killing your livestock. Underground fences work very well, and after a few weeks they won't even have to wear the collar anymore.
I didn't say it was smart to play with it like that but legally it's not against the law to be .07 and armed. Now a lot of law enforcement officers may say "Yeah dude .07's close enough. You're going to jail tonight!" And since there's probably not a court in the country that would take one of our words over a law enforcement officers word in that sitution you could concievably blow a .07 and still be punished like you really blew a .08 but in a prefect world where everyone is 100% honest all the time, technically, yeah they would have to let you walk. Didn't say it would definately happen. Didn't say this was a perfect world either. Just sayin'.
The popo takes folks to jail for DUI all the time who blow less than a .08. Why would it be different for weapon possession? If anything, I would think they'd be more sensitive to that. I dunno, I'm not a LEO but some are here.
-
Well, legally they don't have a leg to stand on to do anything to you unless you're breaking the law and the last time I looked they had to pass laws through the legislature and make them known to the public before they can enforce them. If there is some other standard that they have specifically carved out for handgun carriers that I don't know about then please sir, enlighten me. They can give you a stern warning about toeing the line with your and everyone elses safety by being intoxicated in public while armed but unless they lie and say you blew a .08 then if you were at .07 yeah they would have to let you walk/drive away as far as I know. Why wouldn't they?
Ha, I wouldn't say it's advisable to test this. Of course, it somebody wants to be a wind dummy for this please let me know how it goes.
So it shoots .50 MOA at 100 yards? How does it do at 300, 400, etc., if you have took it out that far? Is this done with hand loads or factory loaded ammo? Match grade ammo?
Not being a smartass, but it would be 1/2 MOA no matter the distance. So at 400 meters it would be 2 inches... in a vacuum anyhow.
Wow, many in this group have judged and passed sentence on this guy. I realize it isn't even up for consideration that the "media facts" may be skewed. It's just a sad, sad story. Dfsixstring SR9c LCP RST4S
It's hard to be "skewed" when the facts are simply the child is dead from his father's gun. Unless it was being wrestled away by an assailant when it went off, I can't think of a reasonable explanation for how a round traveled from his magazine through the boy's chest. It didn't get there by magic. Based on my limited understanding of the laws of physics, two things had to happen: 1. The pistol had to be pointed at the child, 2. The trigger had to be pulled. There is no excuse for either thing happening, let alone both at the same time.
