  1. Over the years I've been on a number of forums.  Mostly motorcycle related.  I've made donations towards a couple of them which were small forums where pretty much everyone knew everyone outside of the forum.  I'm also an admin on another small forum.  TGO is the first of these forums which I have ever paid a membership and in my opinion it has been worth the money, though I don't ever sell guns I've used the classified section for other things.  I don't mind paying the money because TGO is a well run forum.  The kinds of people that make forum life difficult are usually removed from TGO in short order, and the mods just do a great job of making it a cool place.    As for how much money you can make owning a forum, if you go into it with profit in mind you probably will not make anything.  Forum administration is a calling.  You are going to put up with more crap than you could ever imagine so it has to be a labor of love.
  2. My grandfather was blind for the last 6 years of his life due to injuries sustained in a car crash.  He talked about getting a permit but never did.  Dave S hit the nail on the head when he mentioned that many SD shootings take place at arms length.  Not to beat a dead horse but just imagine George Zimmerman, forget the circumstances leading up to the shooting, just imagine being blind and being held on the ground, no reason you could not effectively use a gun to neutralize the threat.  Blind people are already easy targets for criminals, we strip them of their right to use a gun and they become an even easier target.  While wrestling in high school and college I encountered several blind wrestlers, it was amazing what they could do and how their other senses heightened after not having another.  To say that blind people should not be allowed to defend themselves with a gun is taking a step backwards for all of us.
  3. Yep, when you start mowing the road between the house and the beer store you are asking for trouble.
  4. I have a Snapper zero turn, it has a joy stick that only requires one hand to operate, now that's a mower designed by a beer drinker.
  5. Pre-marriage I would have spent time riding motorcycles or fishing.  Post-marriage I just cut the grass.  The lawn mower is loud and slow so I just pretend that I'm riding a Harley.  Just gotta get some chrome for it.  Plus it's kosher to drink beer while I mow.
  6.     Crossing the Cumberland in winter could quickly become deadly.  Depending on where you are you are talking a minimum of what maybe 300 yards across, 50ish degree water probably?  Add into that current.  In the summer I wouldn't hesitate to swim it but in the winter that seems like a recipe for disaster.   What do you think Spots?  Would that still be a go for you?  I think in an emergency situation I would be looking for a boat to "borrow."  Yep I think that cold water could compromise my morals pretty quickly.   I just don't get the people who OBJECT to preparing, especially when they say things like "Oh, that will never happen."  Chances are that  my house will never catch on fire but I like to keep a couple of fire extinguishers on hand, doesn't hurt anything.  Of course these people probably don't do that either.
  7. $100 to play with?  A caulk gun and a bunch of caulk.  Seal up all f your windows good.  That's a project I have to do myself this fall.
  8. My wife carries a Walther PK380.  It shoots well but for the size of the thing I wouldn't carry it.  She likes it though and I'd rather her carry that then nothing.  Sometimes she'll carry a Glock.  She doesn't care for 1911s because of the manual safety.  (Yes, I'm aware that the PK380 has one as well, go figure.)
  9. I carried a borrowed BG for a few days but I didn't get to shoot it.  My normal carry gun is a G23 or 27, the BG was much more concealable than either, I'm a small framed guy as well.  Usually concealment is a non issue for me (as in I don't care if it's concealed or not.)  I thought the BG would do very well in a "need to conceal well" situation.  The trigger may not be great but it's a "get off me gun" not a competition 1911.  Would really like to see S&W come out with a non laser model.  I found the laser a little difficult to operate quickly.  In a defensive situation I would probably not use it, I would be more concerned with eliminating the threat than pushing the button just the right way to get the laser turned on.
  10. Another option is to get a bond.  It may or may not work for you in your financial situation.  It worked well for me when I was single, had 6 or 7 vehicles (all older stuff not worth much), and not much else, and rented my house.  A bond follows the driver, not the vehicle, so you are covered on anything that you operate.  I still have a bond but it only covers me for $10,000, I now carry additional insurance on all but a couple vehicles which do not get operated on the street very often.  A bond runs me about $400 per year.  Now that I'm married, and own a home, wife has a nice car, etc.  I'm not as comfortable with just having a bond.  When this one expires I'm going to see about upping it to around $100K or so, I think that I would be comfortable with that level of coverage.   Just weigh the advantages and disadvantages.  When I first got a bond if I were sued for hitting something there wasn't much they could get.  Now I could easily be homeless.  Evaluate your own situation accordingly.
  11. I'm really wanting a bike.  I just find it ironic that as a kid I always wanted a motorcycle but never could afford one, but I always had a bicycle.  Now I have a garage full of motorcycles and can't afford a bicycle.  Seriously, it looks like a decent bike is going to cost more than I have in most of my motorcycles, but I do tend to find motorcycles on the cheap.
  12. Surprised no one has mentioned pretty much the entire area of Madison.  I worked out there 2008-2009.  Had grown up in the area and it wasn't too bad.  Dad worked in Madison for 30 years and watched it go down hill.  By the time I got out of there in '09 it was crap.  Of course there are decent neighborhoods stuck in here and there, I feel bad for the people that have worked their whole life to have a nice house there.  Not to mention the other neighborhoods I passed through to get to work like Lakewood and Rayon City.  I hated that the cops enforced that 50 MPH speed limit on OHB so much I always felt 50 MPH made me an easy target.
  13.   I'm only an aspiring bicycle owner. But, as a motorcyclist I just wanted to say don't give it up when winter rolls around.  I get some of my best motorcycle riding in during the winter.  Specifically that's when the dirt bikes come out as they require more physical work to ride.  50 degrees is about my perfect dirtbiking temperature, which depending on weather is pretty common throughout the winter around here.
  14.   I think this may be a good idea.  My daughter is 4 and there are 2 things I'm waiting for her to mature enough to do, shoot with me and ride on my motorcycle.  My motorcycle friends tell me that 6 or 7 tends to be a good age as they need to be able to reach the pegs and listen and follow instructions immediately.  I think that the part about following instructions is parallel here.  I really like the idea of when the child can recite the 4 rules and tell me what they mean they are ready for the range. My question is is there anything wrong with letting a child shoot in a 100% controlled environment as in she's sitting in my lap and I have full control over what she's doing before she is mature enough to handle a task such as that?
  15. Tough question there are so many items I own that enhance my outdoor experience.  If I had to pick one item I think that it would be Smartwool socks.  I got a pair for Christmas about 4 years ago and have worn them exclusively since.  When I run out of Smartwool and don't have any clean ones left and have to wear cotton socks I feel like a second class citizen, just about to the point that I'd rather put dirty Smartwool on my feet than clean cotton.  They are awesome socks.  Expensive but I still have 4+ year old socks in my rotation, they hold up very well.
  16. Believe it or not the rider walked away unhurt.

    Facebook

I have one, and my boss is my friend.  But I'm completely transparent with my boss, he really doesn't care what I do as long as my stuff is done at the end of the day and he knows it will be because I'm not getting paid if it's not.  I saw several people fired for Facebook posts during my retail days, not smart to talk trash about the people that write your paycheck.  I have about as many privacy settings turned onto my FB page as possible, yet I still don't post anything I wouldn't want my mom to see, especially since she has FB too.
  18. Ask this guy that crossed the center line and TOTALED this Corvette. I don't want to buy a Corvette out of pocket that I don't get to play with.
  19. Ironic that the OP was in a Sears, talk about a company selling out.  I was working at Sears around 2009 when an inter company email was sent out informing us that Craftsman tools would from here on out be made in China.  The memo informed us to tell any customers who asked that the company had decided to move Craftsman tool production to China in order to give the customer a better value.  What a load of BS.  I remember when Sears used to put a sticker on all of the Craftsman packaging that read "Proudly made in the USA!"  Guess that was just a joke.
  20. You are not breaking the law.  IIRC every entrance must be posted.  Sounds to me like East Town is improperly posted.  I lived over that way for a few months, I wouldn't go anywhere in that area unarmed.
  21. I like the Nuge but I'm unable to forgive someone who cannot remember where they put their carry piece.
  22.   Very good post, even if you wind up being right how much time and money are you willing to spend to prove your stupid point?  I have better things to do than give my hard earned money to a lawyer and spend my time in a courthouse.  I also think that playing lawyer is a foolish thing to do unless you are 100% sure you are in the right, and I'm not talking you are 100% sure that what you are saying is what you read on the internet somewhere.  (I think that is what the OP is targeting in this thread.)  That said I'm pretty sure about the extent of at least some of my rights.  No cop is doing anything like searching my car without a warrant, not because I have anything to hide but because I have yet to find a cop who is willing to put my car back together like they found it before they tore it up and dumped the contents of the glove box and center console into the floorboard.
  23. I see it from both sides.  I've been asked numerous times "where are you going?" or "where have you been?"  That question annoys me, it's none of a police officers business where I'm going or where I have been.  I pay taxes to use the roads and I'm free to use them when I want without being harassed.  On the same token I have no issues with sobriety check points or even being asked for my ID.  I'm fine cooperating with things like that.  If I want to go on a fishing expedition I'll contact an outfitter.
  24. I think it is a good idea to film your traffic stop.  There are cops out there everyday violating peoples rights and they need to be held accountable.  It's happened to me in the form of illegal searches, the cops know that they can get away with it because if they don't find anything the victim has suffered no damages, if they find something a rogue cop can change a few details so that the evidence will be admissible.  I think if everyone filmed traffic stops it would help keep the cops honest.  When it's your word against a cops in a court room the cop will win 100% of the time.  If a cop is doing what he is supposed to then he has no reason to worry about being filmed.  I know they have a hard job and they are underpaid and all but that doesn't mean that they can go around doing whatever they want.
  25. I had a friend of mine that recently had some extensive dental work done.  Was discounted 60% for paying cash instead of going through insurance, which she didn't have for dental.  You do have to ask for the cash discount though.  We do live in a messed up world, the fact that there is a different price for cash than insurance tells me that the system is messed up.
