  1. Do a search and see how many TGO members have bough Tauruses and had to send them back to the factory for some reason.  If you are on a budget I would take a S&W Sigma, or even a Hi Point over a Taurus.
  2. Anybody seen this show Appalachian Outlaws?  New reality series about ginseng diggers.  They really can do reality shows about anything...
  3. I've never had a problem shooting at any property outside of city limits where it was a safe to do so.  I've even shot in a couple of subdivisions.  My MIL lives in a cul-de-sac and her yard backs up to a very steep hill.  All the neighbors will come over to shoot.  It's pretty cool for suburbia.  If you don't want to open that can of worms with the local SO (and it would be a SO as opposed to a PD since you are outside city limits) you could always hire a lawyer and seek their opinion.    I lived in one place in a very rural area and shot in my back yard, as did one of my neighbors (wasn't really a neighbor, lived 1/4 mile down the road.  We had a guy about a half mile down that would call the SO every time we would shoot.  I can't imagine anyone living in a setting that rural and having problems with neighbors shooting???  Sherriffs office responded a couple of times when I was having a shooting marathon.  Pretty much said something like said "Guy down the road made a complaint so we had to check it out, you are being safe, what are you shooting?  That guy is an idiot!"
  4. That's why I put Hi Point and Lorcin stickers on my safe.
  5. Just though that I'd weigh in and give you my $0.02 as a guy who has owned and shot a lot of different .22s.  As the others have said, the SA22 is very hard to beat and one of my favorites of all time.  Super compact and a joy to shoot.  Stay away from the Norinco knockoffs, they are junk!  I also really like the BL-22, another one of my favorites and the .22 that I have probably spent the most time with.  I've also spent a lot of time with a Nylon 66.  They are probably getting hard to find in good shape but they are good guns.  I have a 597 that I picked up for $50 a few years back.  Nothing special but well worth what I paid for it.  IMO it's cheaply made.  It does not like to properly function if it gets a little dirty and the magazines have always been problematic.  I just keep it clean and I have a gun that I can leave in the truck and not worry about it.
  6. This is probably what happens more often than not.  It just doesn't make the news.  A lot of sheep will just assume that you are a cop if you are OCing.
  7. Not a truck but this morning I was cleaning out my old car getting it ready to sell and found an Ipod that I lost 3+ years ago.  I remember losing it, I was driving west on I-40 around Kingston, traffic was a little hairy and I needed a music change.  While messing with the Ipod I decided giving traffic 100% of my attention was more important so I pitched the Ipod over towards the passenger seat and never saw it again.  I swear I turned that car upside down 3 or 4 times looking for it.  Well it turned up at the car wash this morning thanks to one of those industrial vacuums.   Turns out it was behind some electronics box under the passenger seat and could not be seen.  It's charging now, can't wait to listen to it at work tonight, I remember it having some good stuff on it.

    Glock 42

When I first heard about this gun my thoughts were along the lines of "Why?" or "Who would buy that?"  After reading the recent article about the 42 in G&A (first decent article they have printed in a long while IMO) I can see it.  I'm not about to run out and buy one but I can see its purpose.  I think it is very similar to the Bodyguard.  I had a chance to carry a Bodyguard for a few days back in the summer and liked a lot of things about it, I thought that the laser sight was silly and added weight and size to the gun.  I wouldn't mind having one as a BUG or a "I really don' feel like carrying right now but this is better than nothing" gun.  Like others have said bring it out in 9x19 and everyone will want one.
  9. Welcome.  I live in East Tennessee and am from the Nashville area.  Where are you in NC?  We love WNC and spend a lot of time there.  I would guess that you will miss it.  There is no job that could get me to move back to Nashville.  I'll skip on my commentary about the Nashville area, but if you do a search you will find a wealth of information on all of the questions that you have asked.  I lived in NC for a while and I will say that TN taxes and carry laws are much more friendly.
  10. A large arsenal in California is less than the amount of artillery that I carry on a weekend camping trip.  Really though, it's a matter of perspective and dare I say much like the term "assault weapon," I really think that "arsenal" is a hot word used by the media in order to incite panic in the sheep.
  11. There was once a guy that lived in a cabin in the mountains.  He drank as much beer as he damned well pleased, had a safe full of guns and a garage full of motorcycles.  One day this fella decided to get on one of those dating websites.  Now he has a wife, lives in the suburbs, and is constantly asked things like "Do you really need that many guns/motorcycles?"  I won't mention any names.
  12.   What level of stupid does it take to do something like this?  A friend of mine's kid (23) tried that on me and I stuck him in an arm bar until he screamed like a little girl and told him that was a really good way to get hurt.  His dad called him a dumb@$$.  Thing that really bothers me aside from the fact that there is a hot gun in the hands of someone who obviously is not qualified to handle a gun is the risk of the gun going of while they are screwing around trying to get it out of the holster.
  13. In addition to what JWC and the others have said which is correct.  Do yourself a favor and read the TWRA hunting manual cover to cover, it is available online at TWRA's website or you can pick up a hard copy for free just about anywhere that sells licenses.  I seem to constantly hear that you can or cannot do something hunting related that is completely false information.  Hunting laws are not mythological, they are written out in an easy to read and mostly easy to understand format.  There are several laws in this state that either don't make sense or are in place for a peculiar reason, and even things that a non hunter or new hunter wouldn't think of but may accidentally violate.  Game wardens generally don't have a very good sense of humor and are pretty big on the whole "ignorance of the law is no excuse" thing.
  14. That's the whole point of taking the first shot at 15 yards.  There is no need to pull the bolt and the shot will almost always be on paper at that range with the windage and elevation adjustments in the middle.  From there complete your steps 4 and 5 and you are good to go.
  15. There is no need to go through that much ammo to sight in a scope.  Set the dials on the scope dead in the middle and shoot at a target at around 15 yards.  You should be on the paper. Get your windage close then move out to 50 yards and set your elevation.  Move out to where you want the rifle zeroed at and make your final adjustments.  I've used as little as 2 rounds to sight a new scope in before.
  16.   I know people like this as well.  We probably all do.  I know one guy in particular that OCs a large revolver, carries a CC badge (which I know he has flashed at another driver in a road rage incident in the past week,) has had his HCP revoked by the state previously, and regularly carries while drinking.  This is the kind of people that give all of us a bad name.  Competent enough to pass all the "background" checks but honestly not stable enough to carry a gun responsibly.  I say Constitutional carry as well.  There is nothing to stop the buffoons from legally carrying.
  17. I had a good year this year myself, actually the most productive year that I have had in several seasons.  That said I had to sit the season out due to a shoulder injury last year, and got skunked the previous year.  I'm rapidly losing hunting properties just like it seems everyone else here is.  I live in East Tennessee but travel to Middle Tennessee to deer hunt.  Being that far away it's hard to make more than a couple of weekends during the gun season.  I used to hunt archery and ML years ago and may get back into that this upcoming season.  It seems that access to private land, though always difficult, has gone from bad to worse over the past few years.  Most of my hunting is done around Wilson and Sumner Counties, which are growing at an alarming rate.  I'm seeing the really good places that I was hunting 10 years ago are now subdivisions.  I've never been kicked off of a property or asked to not return, everything that I've lost is due to development, or as some would call it, progress.  I did come into a really productive new property this year!  Another property that I have has deer on it but I can't seem to shoot them.  First day I hunted it this year the land owner had watched deer for 2 hours the morning that I got there.  I then saw a deer out the kitchen window while exchanging pleasantries, but it was gone before I could get my rifle and get around the back of the house.  They actually went from seeing deer daily to not seeing any deer at all since that day.  I swear there is a black cloud over me when I hunt that place.
  18. I too have my grandfather's old pipe. Ran across it the other day so I thought that I'd throw a pic up from this thread. I've never smoked a pipe much, just a few times when I was younger. I think I may clean this one up and go buy some pipe tobaccoo and give it a shot.
  19. Anyone who has spent any time in a tow truck or repoing cars will tell you that it is quite exciting at times.  That said I can't watch these shows though as they are horribly scripted and poorly acted out.  I do like Hardcore Pawn, I think people in Detroit just act that way, I don't think it's really scripted much.
  20. I haven't taken the shot in years as I try to avoid putting anything unnatural in my body.  Personally I don't think it's a good idea for otherwise strong and healthy people to take the flu shot every year.  I'm not an expert on these things by any means, though I have done quite a bit of studying to determine whether I want my children vaccinated and whether I want to personally be vaccinated for certain things.  It seems tragic to hear about children in America dying because of a preventable disease.    Because of the severity of the flu this year I have decided to go ahead and get vaccinated this year.  A lot of that has to do with my 4 year old daughter who has a compromised immune system.  I just can't risk catching it and passing it to her.  If it were just me I would probably pass.
  21. I was thinking "An argument for .22 short as a defense round.  I have heard it all now!"
  22. I'm the same way with my ENO.  I keep it in my car at all times it takes up very little space and I don't have a good place to use it at home.  I use it a lot in the woods, IMO it's better than the best ground mat sleeping bag combo.  Just curious, is the machete used to break your 5 gallons of ice into more manageable pieces for thawing
  23. I've had luck with Cabela's when they offer it on their website but it is out of stock go ahead and place the order.  If and when they get it in, which can be several months later, they will send you an email and ask if you still want it.  Thing is they don't charge your card until they fill the order.  I scored 1000 rounds or M-22 for $60 back in the summer this way.  It took a few months but I had no other prospects at that price.
  24. I've struck up several good conversations with others while looking for ammo at Walmart.  Most are good guys, polite, and in the same boat that I am.  When I found .40 for the first time after the big shortage there was another guy there looking for .40 as well.  There were three boxes and we about had to fight over over who got the third box because both of us were relinquishing it to the other.  I wound up taking it and selling it to a female friend for what it cost me.
