  1. Got to my spot a little late but managed to drop a fat doe a few minutes ago.  It was kind of strange.  I spotted her about 125 yards away but couldn't get a shot because there was a fence in the way.  I had decent cover to stalk towards the fence and she was walking away from me so I took off.  Right as I got to the fence she spotted me and must have thought that I was another deer or something because she started walking towards me. I took a shot as she was quartering towards me at 100 yards, she ran in a couple of circles and piled up.  I reloaded and am waiting for another.
  2. Left over tenderloin biscuits from yesterday are reheating in the oven.  About to putthe coveralls on and head out.  The landowner has seen a lot of deer where I'm headed today so hopefully I'll see something.  Need to make up for last weekend which was a wash.  This not being able to hunt at all during the week is killing me.  Usually I've been able to squeeze in a quick morning or evening hunt during the week but I've been working 8-5 so that really wipes that option out.  Good luck out there this weekend everyone and congratulations to those that were successful this week.
  3. Man that girl is dumb!  Wife said no one walked out of Vol State today and she couldn't imagine doing so seeing as she paid for her classes and walking out would be like throwing money away.
  4. Say 3600 was trying to set up members of the gun community to look bad by asking loaded questions.  I think they did not get that result here, they got caring and compassionate people that took a lot of time to help a stranger through a tough time.  How they choose to report what they found is yet to be determined.  BTW I thought this thread, along with others that he posted seemed a bit loaded, and a little out of the realm of ordinary questions.  If nothing else it shows how great some of the members here at TGO are by taking time to try to help someone who they do not even know.
  5. You know you want a Bradford pear tree.  There are so many great  things about them.  When they spend that 3 days each spring looking pretty they will emit that lovely sewage like odor.   Their quickly growing and branching out limbs are great for hitting your head on when you mow around the tree.  In 10-15 years it will surely fall in a windstorm and bless you with an unbelievable amount of wood for a tree of its size.  It should only take 2-3 days with a good chain saw to cut it into firewood sized pieces.  Speaking of which, Bradford pear wood is hard to beat when you need a quick fire, like between the time that you get up in the morning and when you leave for work 30 minutes later, because it will only take about 15 minutes for a fully stoked fire place to burn down to nothing.  Oh, and the best part is they don't even bear any actual pears so you won't have to pick them up and they wont attract bugs and other vermin.
  6. Thanks for the info Omega.  Let me ask you this.  Why do we use sabots?  I always figured it had something to do with being able to shoot a smaller bullet and get get more speed out of it than a larger bullet?  That is just an assumption?  I like the idea of being able to use a big heavy bullet for close range applications and a smaller faster bullet for longer range scenarios depending on where I am hunting.
  7. I feel kind of stupid asking this but I'd feel even stupider if I tried it and it didn't work out, that's if I lived to tell about it.  So, as the title states I have a .45 muzzle loader.  I was over at my dad's house the other day and he was loading up some 45-70 and I got to wondering if there wasn't a good reason that I couldn't shoot those 45-70 bullets out of my muzzle loader?  He was complaining that they cost about $1 a piece and I told him that was a bargain compared to what I'm paying for muzzle loader ammo.

I get steamed every time I look at my paycheck and see how much I pay into SS.  I just think of how much money I'm loosing out on because I know that I could conservatively invest that money and get a better return on my money.
  9. If the temps aren't brutally cold I just wear my rain jacket, it's Goretex and does a really good job of keeping the wind off of me without getting too stuffy.
  10. Cummins Falls would make a good day trip.  Actually once you are in that area you are not far from Burgess Falls and Ozone Falls either.
  11. Still windy.  Can't remember what a deer looks like anymore.
  12. Today I saw.  -Groundhog -red squirrel -about a million turkeys -coyote -woodcock and not a single dang deer except for when I was driving this morning to get there.  Just one of those not really good hunting days.
  13. Very windy in Wilson county this morning. Haven't seen anything except a doofus deer hunting with a shotgun who wanted to tell me guys life story.  Oh yeah and no orange, I'm done with WMAs that have road access after today.
  14. Gun's loaded.  Fanny pack (yup I carry a fanny pack hunting) checked and double checked for powder, primer, boolits, tools, quick loaders, powder measure, and anything I may need.  Taking my dad out on his first muzzleloading hunt.  Just can't get to sleep.
  15. This happened a few hundred yards from my house.  I'm not usually an advocate of warning shots but everyone went home or to jail unharmed so I guess all is good.  Oh yeah, and I'm really getting tired of people from places like Michigan that want to come here and cause all sorts of trouble.
  16. I have to remember the 5th of November because it's my anniversary.
  17. I'm going to give this a try I have two questions. 1)  Do you mix in any pork or other fat? 2)  It sounds like once you roll it up in the wax paper you leave it in the wax paper until it is consumed, is this correct?
  18. I would absolutely go to court.  Simply because that's the only way that you are going to get driving school.  If your record is clean they are going to send you to driving school and dismiss the ticket more than likely.  If you pay the ticket it is going to stay on your record and possibly make your insurance rate go up.  Like yourself, I have a clean record, my rate came down substantially when that last booboo came off my record.
  19. I'm always looking for more ways to eat deer.  I'm blessed with good land to hunt and the land owner wants me to take out as many as possible as they are interfering with his farming.  I keep 3 families comprised of about 10 people fed throughout the year plus I give some meat away to other friends here and there.  Through the years I've learned what my family will and will not use, of course the backstrips and tenderloins, then we cut a few roasts from the hind quarters and pretty much grind the rest, we are always looking for new things to do with ground deer.  I sampled some smoked summer sausage last year and really liked it so I decided that I want to make some different kinds of sausages this year.  I want to make a cheddar jalapeno summer sausage, some Italian sausage and maybe some breakfast sausage.  That would be about 75 pounds.  I have a stuffer and have been looking at seasonings and casings at Gander Mountain.  I'm looking for tips on making sausage as I've never done it before.  I've read to add 20% pork fat.  Should I try to make it all at once?  Any other good ideas with what to do with deer meat?
  20. I'm sorry for your loss but you may be in luck I think there are more than 2 gems here.    -Doesn't look like the 5100 is in great shape I would expect it to bring around $250 in current condition, possibly a little more if you clean it up.  -That 03A3 is a Remington 1903 I'm no expert on the different nomenclatures of 1903s, you need to have someone that is an expert on them take a look at it so you know exactly what it is, it wouldn't surprise me if that gun brings $1000 from what I see on GB. -That DM 101 I think should bring around $250.  There are two on GB that are in better shape for $350 but there are no bidders.   -If that Sport King is as clean as it looks it may bring around $400, these are superb shooters. -Your 1911 could bring better than $2000 that's another one you need to get a professional opinion of, I'm just a guy on the internet. -Lastly, your 15-4, I think you will see $400-500 out of it.   Please don't rely on anything I've said, I'm shooting out these prices based on what I've seen and a little help from GB, I'm just trying to give you an idea of what they may bring.
  21. It certainly takes a little common sense to use them.  Basically it is Corps of Engineers land where I hunt.  The Corp has 5 feet above the normal pool of the lake, naturally most of the huntable land is flat and low lying.  All of it that I have explored which is a pretty good bit but still not a significant portion is marked very well with a boundary marker at least every 100 yards, sometimes closer.
  22. Man that is awesome!  Was he taking candy from all the other kids and trying to redistribute it?
  23. I grew up in Mt. Juliet and spent a lot of time in Lebanon with my grand parents.  I've lived elsewhere since 2004 and moved back to Mt. Juliet this summer.  Well, Lebanon isn't the bigger of the two towns anymore and the whole county has been saturated with tons of people moving in from other places.  Unfortunatley it seems that most of them are yuppie liberals that didn't like it where they lived and want to make our home exactly like where they came from.  Mt. Juliet was more or less an agricultural community when I was growing up but now there are very few farms left.  We traded all of our farms for yuppie housing, if that's not depressing I don't know what is.  I did see a tractor on Mt. Juliet road between Walmart and Providence during rush hour, made me laugh when I thought about how many of those yuppies must be mad about being stuck behind a tractor.
