1. Just my $0.02 I don't ever try to recommend too much gun for a new shooter. That said, my first shotgun was a 20 ga single when I was 10. When I was 12 I moved up to a 870 12 gauge. At the age of 12 I was probably 4'10" and weighed 80 pounds put I still handled that shotgun just fine.
2.
As stated, I would not choose to open carry but I do not have anything against those that do. I just find it funny that carrying a stick to ward off dogs constitutes a club and can ge considered "for the perpose of going armed" and therefor ilegal. I also believe the word "Arms" should mean any and all weapons that can be used for self defense. As for the suggestion that an OC right is a defense against brandishing a weapon if you are "printing". The carry laws in both TN and FL do not make it legal to carry a firearm, they only act as a defense for breaking the law. I know it's semantics but it is the play of words that make or break our rights.
It would be wise to not carry a stick to fend off dogs and whatnot but to instead carry a stick to assist your stride. Tennessee law provides protection for someone who is carrying a stick to aid their walking if said stick is used in a defensive manner. This way you still get your stick without stirring the pot and letting the politicians have more say so about what and how you can carry period. I would bet you would be very hard pressed to find a single legitimate case of anyone being prosecuted for carrying a walking stick. I see people carrying golf clubs and baseball bats while walking on a regular basis. Sorry if I'm coming off as rough I just get defensive when there is talk of taking away any of my rights for any reason and I really feel like you are picking a bone concerning carrying a walking stick.
3. Nope, I couldn't get behind this for a number of reasons. First being that I often OC, just because you choose not to exercise your right to do so does not mean that you should throw that right away for people that choose to exercise it. Secondly in concealed carry states if you print you can be charged with brandishing and other related charges. If you print in Tennessee it is a non issue. My gun does everything in respect to self defense as brass knuckles (if you have ever actually used brass knuckles you would know that they are not worth the trouble as they can break your hand if you actually use them.), switchblades, or a club. I have no desire to carry any more gear than necessary and certainly don't want to trade my pistol for any of these items. Now if the law were changed to say a Weapons Carry Permit to where you could carry any weapon that you wanted concealed or open then fine, but I will not voluntarily trade my right to OC for a billy bat.
4.
Oh man, do I understand your struggle. I spent four years in the wasatch mountains, in Utah. I've NEVER felt more at peace than when I was in the mountains. I put myself at ease, most days, by remembering that I will return to the mountains one day. Here's to hoping we find our way back... Razz
Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I will only be away a few months. One of my favorite things to do was wake up on a slightly cool morning before sunrise and sit on the porch and watch the sun rise. If I try to do that now I get to watch hoopties drive by with their subwoofers rattling my windows instead of deer crossing the yard. Already missing the peace and quiet.
5. It's all about how the meat is processed and cared for. I'll take gamey over steroids, antibiotics and God knows what else they put in that meat.
6. I've done something that I never thought that I would do. I gave up my beloved mountain side home where I really felt at home. I was in love with the solitude, the vistas, and the fact that I could shoot whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted without bothering anyone. Well I wound up getting married and moving into the city because my wife's mortgage is 1/2 of my rent. As I am a seasonal worker it just made sense financially since I will be off work the next few months and she would have had an hour commute each way from my place. We will be looking to move back to the mountain in the spring when I start working again. Hopefully we will be able to find our permanent home with a nice piece of secluded land. In the meantime I'm trying to act civilized while living in the suburban jungle. It ain't easy!
7.
i know nothing about deer hunting. All i know is that they taste great and i would like to get a couple deer to fill a freezer. My brother in law has a little bit of land where he said i could hunt. I know you have to have a license and looked at the TWRA website and saw the info about limits and all. I don't want to invest in a lot of money in equipment and camo, and stands. What the best way to go about this. Also i don't know how to field dress a deer so I'm a little worry about what I do after it shoot one.
Contrary to what Cabela's, Gander Mountain, etc would have you believe it doesn't have to be expensive at all. One you get licenses and hunter safety out of the way you don't NEED a ton of stuff. If I were starting from scratch and on a budget I would buy a Mosin Nagant and some decent hunting rounds for it if you don't already have a suitable gun. Besides that buy a good knife if you don't have one and a cushion to sit on. You won't need camo since you are wearing orange anyway, just wear something comfortable. A good rifle, a good knife, and some patience/ knowledge of local deer habits are all you will need to put one in the freezer. Best of luck. I think I could easily get into the woods for well under $200.

Agenda 21

It really is a wolf in sheep's clothing, at a quick glance it appears to be an initiative to conserve nature, in reality it is a ploy to bunch us all in population centers where we can be easily controlled. Mass transit, bike paths, etc. are all ground work for Agenda 21. Very scary stuff. Of course as soon as I saw that Nancy Pelosi endorsed it I knew that it couldn't be good.
9. Recently tried Crocs for the first time, I love them, super light and comfortable to wear all day. I really have nothing bad to say except they are pretty cold on chilly days.
10.
Yeah.. NO thanks I think they look stupid. Why does everything get labeled Redneck? stupid... Now a just plain gold band with the Ruger eagle engraved into it would look good.. But thats just me
I agree, if a subject is remotely related to anything that someone would do outside without requiring a ball the term "redneck" gets slapped on it. It's getting old.
11. For your purposes I think I would go with a heavy carbon arrow. Might not be quite as fast as a smaller carbon but would be a durable arrow that would be resistant to getting bent/ shattered. If you aren't familiar with carbon arrows about the only way you can hurt them is to shatter them. The only one I ever shattered I shot into a concrete wall.
12. I waited around all day long for a guy to look at a jeep I was selling yesterday. Seems to happen more often than not when CL is involved.
13. I'll play. I'll keep in theme with a recent popular topic. You either love my deep fried turkey or you haven't tried it yet. One turkey 16 pounds is ideal. One pint of creole butter and an injector Tony Chacheree's (SP) seasoning 3-4 gallons of peanut oil Make sure you give the turkey plenty of time to thaw. After it is thawed put the turkey in your stock pot and add water until the turkey is completely covered. Remove turkey and mark the water level with a sharpie or grease pencil. Empty the water and replace with peanut oil. Go ahead and fire up your burners it will take a good hour or so to get the oil up to cooking temp. In the meantime inject the turkey with the creole butter and pat all surfaces with Tony Chacheree's. When you think that you have used enough creole butter use a little more. Once the oil is up to about 400 degrees gently lower the turkey in and watch your thermometer closely you want to keep the oil temp as close to 350 as possible. Cook 3 1/2 minutes per pound of bird. After everyone is done telling you how awesome the turkey is hand them a bottle of Dawn and ask them to clean up your giant mess.
14. Man that thing is so big that its rack wouldn't even fit in one picture!
15. Mothballs work great too, or what if a few pieces of plywood fell off of your truck where they are crossing. I would hate to have to explain to a property owner why my truck has 4 flat tires on his property. Other than that I like the way Flatwoods is thinking. For a more highroad approach maybe call the sheriff or game warden after you see them drive in.
16.
I have no sympathy for the guy. He committed a crime and became a convicted felon. Then he committed another crime and is now going back to jail. Looks like he didn't learn the first time.
I have a hard time agreeing with this statement. It as if you are stating that we should accept and abide by whatever laws the government puts on us without questioning anything. That could get to be a dangerous proposition.
17. My wife and I were both carrying on our first date unbeknownst to one another. It wasn't a big deal for me, if I was going to date someone and she was that adamantly opposed to firearms I wouldn't want to date her anyway.

got laid off

Sorry to hear, you are the third person that I've heard about getting laid off this morning.
19. We tried them this year, maybe we did it wrong but I didn't care for them at all. They were very hard to chew.
20.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't homeless. Looked far too well groomed. Guess he was just in a big hurry. Probably could have walked faster if he had pulled his pants up, though!
Can't tell you the last time I saw someone with their pants on the ground and a straight billed cap that looked anything like they were in a hurry. Must be nice to not have to be anywhere at any certain time.
21. As long as I'm in the back country away from the tourists I OC. It's the people that refuse to be more than 100 yards away from pavement that you have to worry about causing a stink.
22. My place of voting was not posted but it is a very rural community center. I could have likely OCed and an eye would not have been blinked. I went with my wife to vote (We just got married and have not yet combined households) and we were having a conversation to which we could not agree on an answer. I did a little fishing here today but could not find an answer. Say she is going to vote and she leaves her weapon locked in her car, is that legal since the car is parked on school grounds?
23. A few years ago I deep fried a turkey and brought it to Christmas dinner, I'm now required to do this. Outdoor and propane is the only way to go in my opinion, but a friend just bought an indoor fryer and we will have a cookoff on Thanksgiving and I will report back. I inject mine with creole butter and rub it down with Tony Chacherees. Here's a little tip to avoid using too much oil. Before you season your turkey put it in the pot that you are going to cook it in and fill the pot with water so it is just over the top of the turkey. Now remove the turkey and make a mark on the side of the pot where the water level is. Now you know the perfect amount of oil to add. We usually lower the turkey into the oil using a broomstick with a man on each end.
24. My God taught me to love everyone. It's hard but I try. Or at least I try not to hate people. That being said anyone have a manure spreader I may be able to use mid morning?
25. I know a Monroe County detective that has told me stories about people up there that don't have electricity but have some 12 volt lights and will bring the car battery in to use them. I'm not too far from the area that you speak, 15 miles due north maybe from Tellico Plains. I won't give a lot of details, I'm probably more isolated than anyone here and I would like it to stay that way. I'll put it this way, it's 12 miles to the closest gas station and 14 miles to the nearest traffic light. I go weeks at a time every now and then without seeing a traffic light, which suits me fine because I hate those things.
