Looking for a Reliable gunsmith in the Memphis area.
PolePosition replied to a topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
There's no 1911 smith in Memphis that is worth writing about. I've been asking for years. All the locals I've asked, including all the shops, have said to just ship the gun out to a reputable 1911 smith for anything beyond installing sights. One person who I've contacted before is Tim Calhoun. His email address calhouncustomfirearms @ comcast.net. I haven't done any business with him yet but so far he has been pleasant to talk to and am seriously considering him to do a build from the ground up for me someday. I believe he is around Nashville and also has a username on this board. -
Aero makes all of them, so they should all be the exact same quality. Just different logos to my knowledge. I found a manufacturer that makes logo-less lowers for $75. Place called McKay Enterprises. All the reviews have been positive too. I think I might pick one of those up. A little bit more expensive than Aero and its re-branded counterparts, but I hate all of those logos! Haha.

I'm thinking about building a dirt cheap AR as well. I already have a precision build and another high end build on the way, so figure I'd buy some tools and try a cheap one for a change. I plan on using all new parts though. Is buying all the PSA parts the most cost effective way? Or are there other vendors that would fit this criteria as well?

Whenever I've taken girls shooting, they have ALL shot my 1911's better than the other guns in my collection. So it is not uncommon that you would prefer the .45 ACP, especially in a 1911. I say go for it
-
PSA is slow. Why? Probably because they do not have the manpower to get products shipped as quickly as other companies do. That being said, I have ordered from them multiple times. Whether it is sooner or later, you WILL get your order. Just be patient.

SEALs raid pirate compound and rescue hostages
PolePosition replied to strickj's topic in General Chat
Awesome rescue and SEALs are beasts... but a friend of mine brought up a good point. These must not be ordinary Americans or aid workers if they were only held captive for 3 months and the U.S. sends SEALs to rescue them. Far more other Americans have been captive in other areas of the world, including Africa, and held for much longer periods of time, and no such rescue. -
I'll try to address one of the points somebody brought up earlier about the sense of justice. That is, a horrible, wretch of a soul, being allowed into Heaven through faith, whereas the other, a person much better by generally accepted standards, is not allowed to pass due to a lack of faith. Justice in the eyes of God is like this: Everyone has messed up and no one is perfect. Big or small, your foul-ups (sins) warrant an eternal separation from Him, because He is holy and cannot allow such filth in His presence. A white canvas is tainted by a black spot no matter how small the spot is. It isn't perfect anymore, even though it only has a minor blemish. God's justice requires a sentence to be pronounced. But God's grace and mercy is seen in the fact that His perfect Son, Jesus, says something to the effect of: "Ok, I don't deserve to be punished for something I didn't do, but in order for you to restore your broken relationship with my Father, I'll take the punishment on your behalf. I'll die so that you may live." This might be an oversimplification and there might be holes but I think the core tenets hold true. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." "For it is by faith you have been saved, through grace - and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast." "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Faith leads to action. Faith in the Bible is not simply a mere acknowledgement, but results in a changed life that reflects who God is and what He has done. In the end, it is God who gets the glory, praise, and accolades, and those who have restored their relationship with Him partake of this joy and live out the rest of eternity in His presence forever. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away and behold, new has come." "Faith without works is dead. Show me your faith without good works and I'll show you my faith by my works." "Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise our Father in Heaven." "But in keeping with His promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness." I have faith in God, through Jesus, because He opened my eyes and made me aware of my flaws and showed me that if He was willing to suffer for the wrongs that I did, then He is most certainly worthy of my affections and worship.

Ok I'll take you up on that offer. I'll give you a holler next month when my scope comes in so that I can zero it there.

Hey Byrd, no I haven't been cuz that first year fee is staggeringly high lol. I know I spend more than that on stupid stuff but just something about that high fee makes me not want to go. So you're a member there now? How often do you shoot there to you feel like you're getting your moneys worth?
-
I forgot all about them. I tried signing up on some other nearby club's website (either Desoto or another one in Jackson, can't remember which) and they never approved my account. But I went to Natchez twice a couple weeks ago. One day to shoot an AR and another day to do some trap shooting.

Rock River Arms Mid-length A4 Rifle - $725 SHIPPED - AR15.COM That right there. Good, solid rifle. Inexpensive but its got more than just your basics. 2 stage trigger, mid-length (which is smoother and better cycling than carbine length gas system), and lightweight barrel. Some people might say build your own, but for lower end stuff, I always say its good to just get an off-the shelf model. RRA is one of the best values for the that price range. Right now, 5.56mm ammo is about $0.27-0.29/round. The other specialty calibers are going to get more expensive...you COULD get a dedicated .22lr AR15 instead if you want to go super cheap with ammo. The Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 Smith & Wesson 25 + 1 22 LR w/16" Barrel/Collapsible Stock $411.00 SHIPS FREE is a great rifle for that.

12.5" is probably ideal for gas cycling. Shorter than that becomes less reliable. And you want to use a flash hider instead of a muzzle brake. The brakes are designed for longer barrels, so not only will they be louder on shorter barrels, they will also overcompensate. Get you a Noveske 12.5" barrel (switchblock is optional. I don't think they are absolutely necessary) and a lightweight rail system like the KAC URX II or III. Flash hider like somebody above said depends on suppressor. That's Noveske 12.5 with a different rail (edit...Daniel Defense) than I mentioned but gives you a general idea of what the 12.5's look like. That is with a Surefire flash hider as well.

Welcome from Bartlett as well

For defense, go with pump. Easier to operate, maintain, clear jams (which should never really occur), handle light loads, etc. I use a Benelli Nova Tactical with 7 round tube, but the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are good options as well. All 3 are inexpensive, used by military and law enforcement, and are considered by many to be the standard for home defense/tactical pump action shotguns. You really don't need semi-auto but if you really insist, there are options like the Beretta AL391, 3901, Benelli M2, M4, Super Vinci II, and Remington 1100 that are all pretty good. The Beretta and Remington are both gas operated as opposed to inertia/recoil so they are the smoothest and lowest recoil of the bunch. But maintenance is much more involved since you have to disassemble the whole shotgun and piston system and it does get pretty dirty (at least it does when I'm out trap shooting). Also be aware that capacity is lower as well.

I use CLP to clean, Hoppes #9 if its really bad, but I lube with Gun Butter...GB is so nice and slick and doesn't just run or burn off under high temps like most lubes when used in AR's.

Hellow from LMT (lower middle tn)
PolePosition replied to Johnny Rotten's topic in New Member Introductions
When I saw LMT I thought at first that you were an employee at Lewis Machine and Tool haha...until I saw the rest of the subject line =( -
If you don't mind going the 9mm route, the Colt New Agent or Colt New Agent Talo are both good options. I have the New Agent (no sights) and have a CT grip on there for my carry gun. If you'd rather have sights, you can get the Talo edition. It is pretty concealable and I'm a small person. Most friends are surprised to find out I've been carrying around then. So far *knock on wood* it has been reliable on the range. You'll just have to find ammo that will feed properly through your gun....I've owned officer sized .45's in the past and I think the 9mm is a better round for that size on the 1911 platform.

I like my Wilson Combat TTU. Very crisp and no takeup or overtravel. Like somebody else earlier said, it is much like a bolt gun trigger.

Ammo and how the sights are set up from the factory determine unadjusted elevation, assuming of course you are aiming properly. Some factory sights are set so that you cover the target with the front sight. Others set up to where you align the top of the front sight with the bottom of the bullseye. Windage depends. Sometimes factory sights may be either misaligned, or they may be centered but the gun appears to be aiming left/right even from a benchrest. For example, I've heard many Glocks shoot a little to the left, so some people push their rear sight a little to the right. Best to shoot from some sandbags/benchrest and also have somebody watch you to make sure you aren't shooting with improper form. And then swap out with your friend and have him/her shoot to see if the point of impact is still the same.

Is this a search and is it legal?
PolePosition replied to chances R's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
HCP doesn't automatically guarantee to the LEO that your weapons are legit or that you are not a felon. I've been searched before. I didn't do anything wrong so I complied and even chatted with the LEO's partner while waiting. I dunno why people get so bent out of shape. Generally, police will not search without probable cause (close friend of mine is an LEO and I ask these questions to him all the time). At the very least, they do "integrity checks". If the person had refused, then that would have alerted the LEO that something was up. If the person complied, the LEO would just continue with the search, knowing that he will probably not find anything. -
1911 a1 holster recomendations
PolePosition replied to UncleJak's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I've got a 1911 holster for sale here: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/gear-classifieds/65546-fs-various-holsters.html The leather IWB one is pretty inexpensive. I also have a CTAC/MTAC Minotaur IWB as well (looks same as the Glock one pictured but is for full size 1911's). -
Gun Safe Desiccant Silica Gel
PolePosition replied to graydw1's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I use Dri-Splendor silica gel. You can get it from Hobby Lobby and it is used to dry flowers. I just package it up in pouches made from coffee filters. You can microwave it or bake it when it changes color to recharge its dessicant properties. So lasts forever pretty much. It was $5.99 for 1.5lbs.
