Superman - thanks for the picture, helps me visualize it much better. I just sent an e-mail to Dale Fricke, so hopefully he can help me out. I see you have plenty of room to grab the magazine. Any reason you went bullets down as opposed to bullets up? I've been sitting here pretending to draw my mag from a horizontal holster and a bullets-up orientation feels more natural for me. Inertia - the blackhawk one is one I tried at the LGS and it almost covered the entire magazine! Not enough room to grab on it for me.
-
What gun do you use it for? Have any pictures? I looked into some horizontal mag holsters, and I just checked out the model you suggested and it looks pretty good. It's just kind of a gamble since I can't see a picture of one with a Shield mag in it to see how of the magazine is accesible while in the holder. May have to send Dale Fricke an e-mail. Are there any advantages to the horizontal vs vertical orientation? I figure the tradeoff is concealability vs accessibility. Also, which way would be the proper way to orient the bullets in a horizontal holder? (I am left handed, so the mag holder would be on my right side.)
-
Thanks for the response. I realize that having a smaller holster could possibly mean too little held inside of it, but I also figured there are others here who carry lower capacity handguns and have come up with ways to carry an extra mag that works for them.
-
What rigs do you all use to carry a spare mag? (That is, if you carry one at all.) I checked out some at Guns and Leather in Hendersonville the other day, but both the Blackhawk kydex and the Galco leather one were both a a little too tall for my 8 round mag for my M&P Shield. It fit into both of them fine, but only had and inch or less above the end of the holster to grab on, making extraction pretty hard.

The only things I know of that I do left handed are write, eat, and shoot. Everything else is right handed. But for some reason it just feels too weird to shoot handguns* right handed. *One caveat = when I play paintball, I shoot right handed. You would think this translates to me shooting long arms right handed, but no, I shoot those left handed as well. I'm a freak of nature!
-
Ah, finally a topic on left handers! I am a left handed and right eye dominant. When it comes to shooting handguns, I shoot left handed and just turn my head slightly to use the right eye. As far as trying to shoot right handed...I just can't do it well. Only thing I've ever been able to shoot right hand was my mother's Colt .38 snubnose, and I could only shoot that right handed without the left hand. Probably has something to do with how I was holding it. My first hand gun and the one I have shot the most is my FNX, which has ambi controls for safety, decocker, slide stop, and mag release. The mag release is oversized, so it's very comfortable for me to get my short fat thumb to press it. Lately, I've began shooting my M&P Shield, which does NOT have an ambi mag release, and the mag release is in a good enough spot for me to pull my left hand middle finger back to press the mag release. I'm still training with this. The slide stop is a non-issue for me, because I always use the slingshot method so it's the same motion for all handguns. Holster shopping in brick-and-mortar stores for holsters is impossible for me, since I always get the "whaaat?" look when I say I'm looking for left handed holsters. This means I've ordered my Crossbreed Supertuck and most recently my Theis Holster online, since custom order is the only way I can get left handed holsters reliably.

Yeah definitely. I always advocate to my friends to always have some kind of option when it comes to self defense other than just your fists and legs (to run away.) She currently carries some no-name pepper spray like many ladies I know, but since recent events she wants to up her personal defense arsenal, and eventually get her HCP and carry - which is why she asked if I knew anything about the laws regarding buying and carrying taser guns.
-
Jonnin - I thought this was the case, but I really want to make sure from people who are much more well versed in the laws of TN than myself. And I realize that tasers can kill also which is something that I relayed to her, but she wants to have something other than pepper spray until she gets her HCP.
-
One of my friends is interested in getting her HCP and a gun, but until then she wants to look into tasers or taser guns. Now, I know enough about the HCP process to educate her on that and direct her to all the right resources, but as far as tasers I'm completely in the dark. Do you need a license or permit to carry a taser gun? Do you have to attend a certain class? Any and all information would be very helpful. Mods, if this is the wrong forum, please move this. I wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks for your time.

That's what I figured, but I like to get as much research as I can, especially when it comes to laws about firearms.

From what I gather, you can have a rifle or shotgun in your vehicle loaded without one in the chamber but in a self defense situation you can chamber a round. My question is, does this mean it is only legal to defend your self if you are still IN your vehicle? Or does it mean you can legally keep a rifle or shotgun in your trunk, without one in the chamber, and if a situation arises you can pop your trunk, chamber a round, and take care of the situation? The reason I ask is because technically you are no longer in the car, and the law says the rifle or shotgun has to stay in your car.

I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you. I've carried in a Supertuck many times at Stones River and have never had any problem. I carry a full-size pistol, so I am not worried about printing a little bit and I still have never been accosted by the rent-a-cops there. Hopefully this doesn't happen again to you or anyone else.

Good range report. What does SYA mean ?

What do YOU use to clean and oil your gun?

Doesn't Breakfree CLP have teflon in it? What's wrong with using it in the chamber and barrel? -
Carrying a "Compact" 1911 - "Advanced" carry gun?
pattywak replied to Viracnis's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I carry a full-size FNX-9 double stack 9mm pistol just fine IWB in a Crossbreed Supertuck. The 1911, like some have said, is slim and the shorter barrel will make it no problem for you to carry I believe. As far as it being an "advanced" carry gun....I'm pretty sure you could say the same thing about any pistol that one hasn't practiced using many, many times. Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more. "Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast." -
I do love that Federal Champion. Shoots great in my FNX and cheaper than what I can find online. Wish I could snag some in 124gr to see how that does though.
-
I also am interested in this thread. I usually buy Federal Champion from wal-mart at $10.97 a box before taxes...it's hard to beat that price online once you factor in shipping, etc. And there's always the thing about buying in person vs. anything digital.

Welcome from a fellow Murfreesboro-nian. I'm also looking for a place other than On Target to shoot, 20 dollars range fee is kinda expensive for my budget.

Ahh, okay. Maybe someone here may know definitively that's better with the legal language. -
Carrying laws and Private Schools
pattywak replied to pattywak's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I wasn't talking about leaving it in my car while I was at class, I meant carrying it while picking someone up from campus or taking someone there to do something and remaining in the car. When I asked about this in another thread, this is the verbage I got in response: 39-17-1310 Affirmative defense to carrying weapons on school property: "It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under § 39-17-1309(a)-(d) that the person's behavior was in strict compliance with the requirements of one (1) of the following classifications .... (4) A person entering the property for the sole purpose of delivering or picking up passengers and who does not remove, utilize or allow to be removed or utilized any weapon from the vehicle." I'm not a professional by any means with reading legal language but to me it sounds like this conflicts with the verbage previously posted in the beginning of this thread. Unless this one is just a direct exception to that rule. -
Carrying laws and Private Schools
pattywak replied to pattywak's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Thanks for the information guys. Now I have a clarification I need - I've asked before about carrying while picking someone up on campus and the information I got said that it was perfectly legal as long as the firearm remained in the car, etc. But this section of the verbage is what I originally found when searching for my answer to the question of carrying while picking up someone from campus and it conflicts with what people had said here since I am a STUDENT adult. -
A visit to my high school alma mater my be in the near future, and I was wondering if laws affecting carry on school grounds applied to private schools. I couldn't find any specificity in the laws distinguishing private from public. Anyone have an idea?

Looking at either a FNX-45 or a S&W M&P 45 opinions on either
pattywak replied to Tom_in_SoddyDaisy's topic in Handguns
I've shot the M&P 45 at the range, and I currently own an FNX, but the 9mm version. I have handles the FNP-45 though. I don't think you mentioned if you were right or left-handed, but myself being a left-hander, I found the full ambi controls of the FNP-45 to be fantastic. I also have a great track record with my person FNX. The M&P was a good shooter, it was actually the first .45 I've ever shot. My hand fit it better than the FNP-45, but that is the only benefit I would give to the M&P over the FNP-45. Since you said this would be for home defense and size doesn't matter, I would have to suggest the FNP-45. More rounds in the magazine, great ergos (in my opinion, even for my small hand), and a good shooter. -
Some Clarification needed on carrying in a Restaurant.

Thanks everyone for the information.
