squirrel hunting strategy and tactics
EastHipster replied to Fire/hunting guy's topic in Hunting and Fishing
YES. The one's that I have seen have moved up to higher ground with more fallen trees and hollowed out logs. But in the first week of January, I was seeing at least 20-40 per day while Deer Hunting. -
Did you do any Locator Howls first or just the Distress calls?

squirrel hunting strategy and tactics
EastHipster replied to Fire/hunting guy's topic in Hunting and Fishing
The land I hunt, the squirrels have been nearly non existent since Deer Season ended. I've been on Sunny Days, Cloudy days, Rainy Days, Cold Days, Warm Days... And it's a nice Wooded area with every Mast Tree there is. -
TrickyNicky, I'm doing population control Ona friend's land. He has horses and dogs plus the Deer and Turkey are getting killed a lot (and not by me!!)

I've just started myself.... A Howler, a Distress Call and maybe a Squeaker. Howler locates them and gets them 'talking' to you. A Puppy Distress, Rabbit/Fawn or Woodpecker distress get them in. A "Squeeker" gets them to freeze so you can take a shot. I have a Primos Mini Howler, Catnip and a Mouse Squeaker plus an All N One Deer Call. You can Squeak with your mouth.... I've gotten packs almost in but my position/cover/wind was wrong and they didn't come in close enough. Learning.... I use a Rifle (AR)

I tried callling the number yesterday afternoon but didn't get an answer. Are they open? Any experiences there? I saw a bad YouTube video that looks like there is a $5 "Lake Fee" which I'm guessing is $5 a head. There are Boat Rentals but it looks can you can fish off the Pier. I found their Trout Stocking schedule online.

I tried it with a G26. Hated it. Felt like I had a Brick on my leg.
-
It's good. Also take a look at www.shieldedholsters.com I've had a few of each for 27, 17 and a 1911

Will do. For the record...I went back and counted my 30 yard target. 124 inside the 10" Guessing that at 40 Yards I would have been cutting it close. And I had 154 inside the 10" from 20 yards.

OK.... I printed out a few Turkey Head targets and bought some Flitecontrol #5 3" today. Will be interesting to see what it does. Also picked up a Slip-on Limbsaver :) The Length of Pull was a little short on me, I was shooting in a T Shirt and I have bony shoulders...wasn't quite in the Pocket when I was shooting. Won't make that mistake again!

I just printed a few Turkey Head targets for next time. I overlayed them over these patterns...Dead Turkey. Will go out to 40 yards next time.
-
With these patterns, should I bother with the trying out the Flitecontrol? I've never hunted Turkey before...but this looks like a large but still useful pattern to me.
-
I've only seen a few Squirrels out since Deer Season closed. And Ive been out hunting maybe 5 times.

Getting ready for Spring Turkey season....decided to shoot a couple of patterns today. First time shooting this Shotgun...picked up used from a TGO member last week. Mossberg 835 UltiMag 12Ga with 24" No Slugs Barrel Accumag Extra Full Turkey Choke Federal Strut-Shok 3" Magnum Turkey Load 1 7/8oz #4 NOT The Flitecontrol....this is the cheaper Blue Box $10 at BassPro I think. I only fired from 20 yards and 30 yards. I used small cardboard silhouettes (had them in the car) so some pellets went off the paper. The targets were on the ground leaned against a bush and I was shooting from Prone position I counted 18 in the 3" circle from 30 yards 130 total in the 10" circle from 30 yards 37 in the 3" circle from 20 yards Didn't count up the 10" circle from 20 yards (I think the Turkey died already)

Well...I'm persistent if nothing else. Went out in the rain Saturday. It was not too hard for the most part Saw three squirrels about 20min before sunrise. A bit too dark to shoot but I figured I must be in the right place so I waited. Didn't see anything else. Worked the woods for four hours. Still had fun -

Home defense and hearing considerations
EastHipster replied to PolePosition's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Adrenaline will NOT keep you from having hearing loss. Permanent or temporary. That said...I don't keep my electronic earmuffs on the night stand, -
Having Struck out on Deer, I went back for some Squirrels today. Had been seeing literally 20-30 a day over the last few weeks plus an occasional Rabbit. NOTHING was out in the woods today. It was a little colder though...Frost on the Ground etc. But even when it warmed up I didn't see anything. Is there a "magic temperature" I should look for through the rest of the Season?

Was patient...and didn't get a Deer :(
EastHipster replied to EastHipster's topic in Hunting and Fishing
"Mine" were driving me crazy. Several times I could hear them less than 25 yards away but they were sticking to the Brush. Out in a nearby open field, i counted at least 7 Carcasses but I think they must have been going out in the open much earlier in the year. I just lucked out when a friend bought a large lot of Land and he is letting me hunt it. Learned a LOT already. -
I went out six times...just in the last two weeks. Found tracks, then found beds, figured out the peak times.... Yesterday I saw a Buck but it was in thick brush. Could only get a bead on his tail. Was patient, didn't shoot and it kept on moving through and I didn't take a shot. I'm glad I didn't take a guess at a wild shot through the brush. But bummed that I ran out of season! Next year I'll start earlier.

My 'hunting experience' was only as a kid tagging along.... I've just gained access to good private hunting land...deer season almost over :( This morning I scouted for 4 hours (thick woods, 100 acres, lots of hills). I found a hot spot of Deer activity. Tracks, Scrapes, Fur, Carcass (coyote got one). It has easy access, a great natural hide where you can shoot in several directions with good Shooting lanes. I was moving way too much today but wanted to check out all the land. When j go back, should I just get in that hide and WAIT?

What is the max distance for the test there? The Range is less than 30' long...and most people aren't sending their targets to the very end of the range there anyway (target piles up on the mulch. The B29 is a 1/3 scale target. I would bet they are doing the long shots at 15' They aren't going to bring the close shots in. You could just poke holes in it with your Barrel :) Maybe they could add a Bayonet portion to the test

Defensive situation question
EastHipster replied to Newman's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
But this is the basis: When a person is assaulted, by the [use of force] [attempted use of force], in such a way as to create in his or her mind a reasonable belief that he or she is in imminent and actual danger of [death] [serious bodily injury], he or she will be justified in [threatening] [using] force to defend himself or herself even to the extent of killing another human being. The [threat] [use] of force can only be to the degree reasonably believed to be immediately necessary to protect against the other's [use] [attempted use] of unlawful force. The danger creating the belief of imminent [death] [serious bodily injury] must be real, or honestly believed to be real at the time, and must be founded upon reasonable grounds.1
