  1. If you don't find anyone to take you up on the pizza and beer offer give me a call at the shop next week and I'll talk with you for a few minutes.  No special tools really needed for the lower assembly.  Probably got everything already lying around your house.  About the only speciality tool you could use comes into play with the barrel assembly but there's even ways around that too.   But call and I'll be happy to tell you what to watch out for and some shop secrets to keep from marring or losing parts...   Good luck and it will be a rewarding experience for ya!
  2. Headspace will be determined by barrel extention, chamber and bolt.  As long as these are ok now and are kept together, you should be ok. The barrel nut is only to retain the barrel inside the upper receiver and should never be used to adjust headspace.   You'll need a small punch to remove the gas tube pin and depending on what type of barrel nut you have (if original plastic 2 piece handguards or free-float one piece, etc.) you'll need a barrel nut wrench.  I have seen people use pipe wrenches and I have seen people ripped the teeth off the nut doing so.  Not the end of the world but to replace the barrel nut, you have to remove the entire front sight/gas block assembly... then you get to messing around with being sure the gas port gets lined back up, etc.. can be a real challenge if doing this for the 1st time.   If you're still needing this though and plan to be in the Knoxville area anytime soon, I will swap them for you for free.  I'm sure others are a lot closer but just offering if you can't find any other alternative.  10 minute process with the proper tools and that's taking your time ;o)   Good luck
  3. I wasn't a big fan of muffs either.. tried several brands - had a pair of PRO EARS for years but they're kinda Bulky...understand you'd not prefer muffs but I picked up a pair of Howard Leight IMPACTs - electronic... love them.. they're very compact, thin, etc... fold to a small footprint and I've forgot I've had them on they're so light and comfortable... may be worth looking in to... can be found retailing around ~$60-~80.  I can get you a pair if you're remotely interested... email me for the price..   Good luck!
  4. Yeah, you'll see that quick turn around when you see Bigfoot riding on a Unicorn ;o) ... don't mean to bust your chops... given the holidays I'd wait another week or so... they very seldom lose anything until after the check clears...  just try to get it out of your head and forget about it.  We're waiting 2-3 months on dealer to dealer transfers now.   But, if you really want to call... # (304) 616-4500   Good luck
  5. You can write a letter to the branch stating you wish to cancel the form.  Same mailing address and attention as you sent your Form 1s to...  Even after it's been approved you still have a short while to cancel so you'll be fine. As long as you haven't "made" anything and it's a reasonable amount of time, understanding once you have your stamp that timeframe will be expected to be very short... You can always change your mind and they will eventually send you back a refund.   As far as databases go, I concur, the NFA registery would be the least of my worries.   Good luck,
  6. Here's the link to the 5320   Fill it out in duplicate.  Make sure the box is check to say "no" the items will not be returned to original location as the move is permanent.   Good luck, they'll send the forms back unfortunately to the original address... so hoping you still have mail forwarded, etc..   http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5320-20.pdf
  7. Rab, Same price to thread the 541 - $50.. timing wise, I can thread them both in a few hours... the protectors take more time to thread than the barrels since they have to be bored as well.. just more setup... Be best if you could bring it down one day and pick up the next or a weekend would be even better but if you had plans to visit Knoxville or had something to do for 3-4 hrs I could get it knocked out with prior scheduling.
  8. Ramjo, If you can send it, I will be sure there's no problems with it but I'd rather have the suppressor for a function fit ;o) ... You'll be ok either way buddy.
  9. Sure Rab, I can make a knurled thread protector for $25. If you're shorting the barrel and it's the same OD, we can usually create a flush mount that uses the residual and matches very well.. otherwise, a nice knurled proctector works great too.
  10. Ha, yeah probably could have chosen a better selection of words there )
  11. Sounds like a plan Ramjo... be thinking too if you'd like the barrel shortened any (if it's not already 16 inches).. By all means something that doesn't have to be done but just keep in mind the extra length a suppressor will add and if you want to try to compensate for that. No extra charge while it's already set up in the lathe to just whack it off but it's your personal preference on what ya want. The 10/22s look tacti-cool with the short barell/suppressor setup. Just PM me when you're ready
  12. Hey Rab, If you can remove the barrel, I can still do it for $50. If you don't have the barrel wrench, you can ship the whole gun and it will be $70... the S&Ws just take a little bit of extra time removing the barrel and such. Plus you have to recrown because the factory cut crown doesn't get completely removed during the turning down on the lathe. So it leaves a little lip. Some leave it but I prefer to machine the face square again and cut a new crown. Plus shipping back depending on what you sent. Be happy to help though.
  13. Hey Ramjo, Nothing wrong with selling your barrel and buying a factory but threading isn't that bad. I do it for $50. A new threaded .920 barrel is going to run you easily $120+ for the cheaper ones. But yeah, the .920s look very nice with a Sparrow, Quest, Outback type 22 suppressor. I did a 10/22 tactical for my son a few years ago and with a quest, you couldn't tell where the barrel ended and the suppressor started. It was pretty slick. I have a stainless .920 in the shop if you're in the area you could look at. Be happy to help with the threading too. Or, if you're interested in a stainless bull model, this one I have in the shop was brand new. Took it to a demo a few weeks ago... < 20-30 rounds through it. I'd take $50 and your barrel in trade if you want it. I have a used quest suppressor in the shop as well. Have some Sparrows on order but the ATF is dragging here lately. Good luck, the 10/22s are excellent suppressed weapons.
  14. Have to say this is my favorite. It's my patrol rifle and I just lub it. Still a loud little booger even with the suppressor. Unbearable without!
  15. V9'er, I had a S&W come in the shop a few months ago with a similar issue. Customer wanted to replace the gas system with a piston kit. I winded up making a cap for my press and pressed it out under steady slow pressure... if you can't get it out that way and don't care about the factory block you can mill it out as well. If you've applied heat it's going to be more stubborn now than ever if that didn't get it budge. I'm in Oak Ridge, about an hour and 1/2 from Chattanooga. Will be out next week on vacation with the family but I'll be back around the 25th if you haven't gotten anywhere with it I'd be happy to help if you still need it. Good luck!
  16. Dealers like this have always amazed me. When I receive anything in whether new or used, the item is logged and then if possible I immediately tape the box sealed. I never show anyone a customer's item much less let them hold someone else's stuff and OMG would never think of shooting anything unless the customer specifically requests some kind of service to be performed. I routinely will meet a customer somewhere to allow them to shoot their new toy and even then have never ever shot anything even when they have asked me if I'd care to WITH them standing right there mind you. I only handle and fire when service warrants it. Sorry you had to go through this. I'm sad to say I've seen it happen on higher end machineguns and rare collectibles too. I can honestly say though I've seen poor decisions like this kill someone's business faster than anything else. Here's hoping your Form 4 comes back quickly. I agree with the post above that no monetary action can make this right. Exit gracefully and show them that you at least have more class than they do and just take your biz elsewhere. Good luck and stay safe! 17. Wolf, I would agree that from all I have read over the years, Savages are usually very decent out of the box. There have been a few, as with all shelf rifles, that have been hit and miss. In my personal opinion, if you could double your entry amount you can get into a nice used/proven entry gun (rem or savage) that will serve you well until you need to step up. Keep in mind, as others have said, to go any distance, optics is as if not more important than the rifle itself. When you start shooting that distance, sure you know there's more than just putting the cross hairs on the target. Reading the wind, holdovers, MOA/MIL, etc... lots of phrases start to come into play. My advise would be to go read as much as you can on a forum like snipershide.com ... there is a wealth of knowledge about distance shooting. I am new too to long range having shot most my life at things measured in feet (law enforcement), I'm slowly venturing out so I'm in no way trying to say I know more than others who have posted, just giving you my experience as I too go bit with the bolt action bug... I got bit BADDDDD ;o), if you don't believe it, go check my ad out on the classifieds for the Barrett 338 Bravo. I was smart enough though to know I'd better get something smaller and cheaper to learn on before I went slinging $4-$5 downrange every shot!! I slowed down a bit and started by reading, reading, reading... all while I was saving, saving, saving .... In the end, I was fortunate that I was able to do the buy once, cry once approach and I opted for an Accuracy International AE Mk III. No doubt the weapon will always outshoot me, hot , cold, whatever. But plan to have $5-$6k in a decent balls to the wall setup. I have since upgraded it to a covert 16"/suppressor version. Thing is so dang pretty I'd about bump my wife out of the bed if she wasn't as good looking ;o) However, I have seen a ton of Remington, Savages, Tikka, etc. for sale from good trained folks looking to step up to something else. Whatever you decide, I do recommend putting as much reading time beforehand ... I thought I knew enough and winded up buying scopes, mounts, etc. that I had to move to other rifles or sell off because I just didn't plan right. Keep in mind, there would be nothing wrong either with picking up a jam up good scope and putting it on the Colt. You can learn to read the wind and the 5.56 will go the distance if loaded right. Whatever you do, have fun doing it and stay safe. If you get up to Oak Ridge, you're more than welcome to come and shoot anything I have in inventory if you want some seat time. I've purchased several nice Remington 700s for a few of our deputies and they do well and are very pleased. Find what you think you want and drop me a PM, I'll be happy to let you know what I can get you one for. Good luck and happy hunting!
  18. Both can be SBR'd successfully. The issue with both Umarex and GSG, as some have referenced, is the stock barrel's diameter is too small and its thickness too thin to accommodate the thread depth needed for the 1/2X28 pitch most 22 suppressors use. I have seen several thread to a smaller diameter and then put a thread adapter to step up to 1/2x28 but that barrel wall is very thin and I've always been concerned to cut any thread pitch in it. I machined a slightly undersized sleeve for mine, pressed it over the barrel, pinned it, and then had the extra material necessary to thread for the suppressor. I can say the GSG I did was a very reliable gun for what it was. But it looks like you went with a Sig so moot point ;o) ... Good luck and stay safe!
