Wells, as of today....may change tomorrow ;o)   If your item is in a trust, it should convey without probate or anything like that...your trust should have of course beneficiary information that shows who gets it.   If it's in your personal name and you/they want family to keep it, they'll have to fill out a Form 5.  No tax would be necessary for heirs but they would still have to get prints, signoff, pictures, approvals, etc...   If they choose to sell it or transfer it out, your probate/estate coordinator can facilitate a Form 4 tax paid ($200) transfer to whomever  - dealer or individual.   Or, they can simply put a 16" or longer barrel back on it and sell it as any other title 1 weapon... it would no longer be a SBR.... probably the easiest, if not going the heir route. In my opinion Form 1 SBRs have really no extra monetary value in resale unless they are factory SBRs ... reason being anyone can still make their own so unless there's a compelling reason (usually price and/or configuration is exactly what user wants) it's much easier to sell as a title 1 and just simply have the SBR removed from the registry... letting ATF know via a written letter is their request but currently NOT a requirement.

jeez fellas, where were you all 3 weeks ago? ;o)   I just sold a NIB Nightmare at COST a few weeks ago to a very nice girl... she happened to come up with a fella who bought a NIB 238 I sold at cost.... she saw the 9 and came back later and got it ... nice snag for em both!  I won't mention any names as I don't want you guys hatin' on em!  ;o) ... I was shocked as though I got a lot of tire kickers, I really thought they would move faster than they did.  I love these little pocket pistols.    But most definitely the 238 series ... had an Eq for several years... sold it off my hip and regretted it ... wanted to try the 938 so I picked up both ... just after handling the 380, the 9, although just slightly smaller, seemed noticiably heavier loaded to me - I keep these in my cargo pocket.  But as luck would have it, had some invoices coming due so I had to turn em both quickly...   But I am happy to say my rep knew I was a FDE fella and called me a few days ago ... had a Tan/FDE 238 model come in and he put it aside for me... So I'm back toting a Sig again!! Happy man!

  Sure it wasn't the 516?  They make a piston pistol version too w/brace ... it's a lot more than the M400 DI but $2099 is even still over MSRP of that ... just FYI though... they look very similar side by side.

Check out the Savage 220 series... sold a few to some hunters... they seem to really love them ... rifled barreled... they're a very nice out of the box gun.  Accutrigger...  retail around 6 but you can find them much cheaper ... Pretty tight groups at 100 yards... simply amazing for a slug!

This has been in the works for over a year now... ATF been trying to close the loophole for some time... as a carrot, they've promised us no CLEO anymore... personally, I think the prints and photos are ok ... The trusts will still be a vehicle for ownership and still have their benefits.  I honestly have always felt it's always been the CLEO most people had the hardest heartburn with.  Dan Shea (long time NFA'er - owner of Long Mountain Outfitters and others sat down with the ATF years ago trying to get this CLEO requirement to go away).   Removing the CLEO clause regardless will cause another surge of forms coming in so until the new help gets in and up to speed it's sadly going to stay a painfully slow process.  But if this allows more NFA ownership we in general should embrace it as a move in the right directon.    There's also a movement right now trying to get suppressor OFF the NFA list and allow a simple 4473 to process the approval.  Now how excellent would THAT be ;o)   We'll see... 

Romak, had a customer who has several of these 31s tell me a while back the end of the stocks are beat up and discolored from the soldiers kicking the snow off their boots in the field... Appears yours may have some stories to tell!   When the guy brought this by in the condition it was in, may be almost want to cry ... like when a transferable machine gun gets cut up ... I rememeber seeing these in 55 gallon buckets at the guns shows way back... super cheap... always thought they were one of the most accurate and intertesting stock weapons ever.  They've sure gained more popularity over the recent years.  Real treasure to find them in Ramjo's condition too!

Yeah on the surface I know. WTF right! Well what had happened was it was his brother's gun and he had whacked off a few inches with a hacksaw. So the cut and recrown was definitely in order. It's a Frankenstein host anyways. The flash hider actually made it look pretty decent. I was shocked. It was a Tapco that came out almost same OD as the barrel. He's going to eventually suppress it too. Just a back hard plinker for him. I'll post some more pics tomorrow if I get time. Here's one of it in the back ground with an AK He had me put the same style hider on it.

That is a nice looking one.  I got one in the shop customer had me cut the barrel back, thread, recrown and put a muzzle break on it... were the papers in the stock still by chance? 

Fred,   I've seen a few SCARS with Elcans on them ... may want to check that out... makes for a sweet setup...  but if you're wanting to push it out a little further though, I think a Nightforce or Leupy would do you well.  I wouldn't go any less than a 3.5x15 ... Personally my short list is S&B, USO and then Nightforce but there's much more great glass out there too.   I have no experiece but SWFA has gained a lot of momentum and a lot of guys seem to like them... they are a great scope for the value.   Guess you'll have to bite the bullet and figure out what it is you want to shoot and how... then pick a recticle you like.   I know Leupold got a bad rap several years ago but it was their customer service not their quality... Lot of guys will tell you they still make some nice dang glass... I had Mark IVs on my Barretts from the factory - both 50 and 338 so that will tell you what Ronnie Barrett thinks of their ability to hold up.  I've even seen a few VX series riding atop SCARs.. My only personal issue with Leupold is the lack of recticle choices like some of the others offer.   But good luck ... I have a USO SN3 3.2x17 with an H25 recticle here at the shop.. you're more than welcome to come by and look through it... heck you can even mount it on the SCAR and try it out if you'd like... I wouldn't mind.   What color SCAR did you wind up with?

Yeah, we're using some of them now. Did a F3 yesterday.  Of course they can only be used where photos/prints are not needed.  So dealers, corps, trusts, etc..   www.atfonline.gov/eforms   As of now, per examiner, only thing we're saving is the mailing time but hey every little bit helps.  When you hit the button it's the same as having dropped a forms in the mail and them reaching Martinsburg or Atlanta.   But any movement I think is a positive one!!!

Like a puzzle eh... tie our hands and see what we come up with ;o)   Got any Ammo for it?  If you have a 308/7.62x39 take the largest diameter of the shell casing - the lip around the primer area.... on a 1/2x28 this diameter will be 'almost' the same as the barrel diameter...   If it's a 14x1 factory size barrel there will be a noticable gap all the way around. - 1/16 - 1/32 easily ...   Good luck... buy some tools man! ;o)  Just Kidding... this way is much more fun!

Is it threaded now and you're wanting to determine the thread pitch? Or are you wanting to get it threaded? If you get no takers and happen to be coming thru the oak ridge area I'll be happy to measure it out. If it's a standard AK barrel, it should be a 14x1 metric left hand thread pitch. Although I have threaded a few for 1/2x28 as well which drops OD down a bit from 14mm to little under 13mm. Your 1/2x28 is a right handed thread. If it's threaded now you can visually look at the thread pattern and determine if it's left hand or right hand.

Kegger, get yourself a dedicated 22 upper with a suppressor and go shoot in THEIR back yard ;o) ... love shooting the AR platform suppressed with 22s... full auto even better.   All seriousness aside, we had a Yotes problem around here few years back.  Tried to get the county to allow a few deputies to go out and take care of them.   Depending on where you live, you may can use your experience and services to offer something like this ... I've seen Coyotes, deer, hogs and other animals drive local farmers crazy .. might have some fun and be getting paid a little too.    Anything you do would be best if you could swing for a suppressor... no doubt you know how distictive a 5.56 is fired unsupressed on a silent night.   If you get a chance, post some pics.... I had a nice Thermal on mine but sold and and have been teetering between 14s head-mounted or behind an aimpoint or something like that ... not sure... lot of folks who do night crawling recommend the 14s be head mounted and that may be very well what you're experience was too.  I'm just wanting something to fit my patrol that would be easy and effective and quick to deploy.  I have an AI 308 too that's so itching for PVS-22 setup out front of it ... but I think a set of 14s on my 416 would be adequate.    As of now, I have an old set of 7Bs that I've used for 20 years or so ... they work but need to be upgraded bad.   Welcome back!

Price wise, given he already has the hosts now, it should be cheaper for him to convert one of these into a SBR rather than the expense to buy a complete new weapon.  In the case of an AR15, it is a lot easier to just swap uppers.  Next easiest thing is to replace the barrel ... finally, have your original barrel cut, threaded and recrowned ... cheapest being the later since you're using your old barrel -  no parts replacements, just modifications to it ....   Given he'll be traveling (possibly unknown times), the piece by piece, step by step, build it yourself may afford an easier approach to get from a to z in my opinion.   Legality wise, the time, cost and paperwork to either "make yourself" ATF Form 1 or "transfer" ATF Form 4 is the exact same ... same requirements for fingerprints, CLEO signoff, photos, etc... same approval process and time period.  Same $200 tax stamp (make or transfer).  Approval times have been slipping up and over 6 months now... last 2 I had came in 8 months .. heard rumors a year may be the norm soon.   If you decide to make the SBR yourself, when you fill out the form 1, it will ask for an actual barrel length. They require you to enter this initially but Caster is correct, once the paperwork is approved and the receiver is a legal SBR, you can then put ANY length upper on it.  You'll just need to pick one to put on the paperwork.  It will ask for overall length and barrel length. Once it's approved, ATF "prefers" that you notify them in writing if anything changes (I changed length from 12" to 10", etc.) but this is NOT an actual requirement, it's just something they ask that you do and very, VERY few of us do it.   If he gets his paperwork approved, there's plenty of smiths around that can take his original barrel and shorten it to whatever he wants (myself included) .. it is a very simple process if you have the proper tools.  Or he can keep the original non NFA upper. The neat thing with a SBR is it is ONLY an SBR when the barrel is < 16 inches... if you were to travel interstate for instance you could simply put your 16" barreled upper back on and legally cross the state lines with no requirements to notifiy anyone - as long as the weapon was legal in the destination.   If he ever decides to sell the weapon and has trouble finding a buyer for a SBR, he can always put a 16" barrel back on it and sell it just like you would any other rifle.  When we remove items from the NFA registry, it is not required again but this is a time when we DO send a letter stating we wish to have item x, serial # y removed from the NFA registry as it no longer meets the specifications of a short barreled rifle, etc..   ATF does require the "maker" of a new firearm to engrave their information on the receiver.  This includes your name, city and state.  So if he does a form 1, he'll have to have someone engrave this information on his lower receiver whereas, if you buy a factory SBR, it will already have the manuf. name engraved.

Steelharp,   SIG's NFA side is next to impossible to charter... I've spoke to reps for them that didn't even know they made NFA items much alone sold them...  I tried and finally gave up....  I know they've recently got on the band wagon seeing the consumer side and value so things may have gotten better but they are not as easily available as one would hope.   If he's stuck on buying a factory one, you have to first find one.  If it's out of the state he is domiciled in (TN I'm assuming but wherever) it will first have to be transfered to an in-state dealer where he/you reside.  So if you find a dealer in MN who has one but it has to get to TN, dealer in MN will have to transfer the item to a TN dealer... this is done tax free but can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 4 months ... then once his dealer has it he can do the paperwork to start the process of his ownership.    I think in your situation the best approach would be to get approval to MAKE an SBR (as opposed to buying one).  This way you can find a host (should be much easier than an already SBR'd in inventory item) .... you could have the rifle now and use it in its non-SBR form while you wait... or you as his father could still legally have the non-SBR rifle there and hold for him ....  then when the forms are approved he can have the barrel shortened and/or puchase a new upper.   Should ask which model is his looking to do?  If it's their folder models (556/551, etc.) ... a simple thing to do is to puchase a pistol version of that weapon now... apply for the form 1, when approved add a stock...   If it's their 516/716/400 AR type series you can have the barrel shortened and/or puchase a new upper when you get the approved forms.   Feel free to call or have him call me and I'll be happy to discuss the NFA process, pros and cons .... can go over the trust info too as 173rdABN mentioned.   I, as others I'm sure appreciate his service!

The registered "part" on your new SBR will be the receiver.  You can purchase a SBR but then you'd have to wait on the form 4 to clear before you had it.  You can form 1 it yourself.  If you go this route, you'll have to have your information (name & city) engraved on the receiver somewhere.   Sounds like the host right now is a 16" barrel.  Given this, the form 1 would allow you to hang onto the original weapon and enjoy it while the ATF processes your paperwork.   The only negative to the Form 1 is the receiver will then have YOUR name on it.  Many prefer a company/business name for better resale down the road but given the current conditions you shouldn't have too much trouble selling it either way if you ever chose to.   There's several places that will do the engraving for you.  If you can't find anyone local I'll be happy to help with that as well.

Form 1 is tax paid  "Maker form" ... use this when YOU make something ...SBR, SBS, Suppressor, etc..   Form 4 is a tax paid "Transfer" of an item already made.  This is when you get something transfered to you.   Both are $200 and BOTH need to be approved before you have the item in your possession... re, don't buy a barrel and then fill out a form 1 to SBR your rifle.  Form 1 it first, get approval and then you can add the barrel.   as mentioned, in your example above you would more than likely do a Form 1 yourself for the SBR, then purchase a suppressor that would transfer to you on a Form 4. Another alternative would be to buy an already made SBR and it would transfer in to you on a Form 4 just like the suppressor would.   I have a NFA page on my website that lists some of these forms and what they are used for.  Be happy to explain more if you drop me a call sometime.

You can't get the forearm slide assembly out of the receiver (push slide assembly forward, then both rails push outward back towards the receiver walls/sides - there's 2 locking areas in the receiver)    The magazine tube out of the receiver? (It screws in but they use locktite .. will have to use some kind of strap wrench or carefully place it in a vice - be careful not to booger it up)   or you having trouble getting the forearm off the slide? (there's a round castle-like nut that holds the forearm to the slide assembly)    Sorry not quite following exactly what you're needing help with.
