  1. ALL HK91s are preban by nature of the model.  HK changed post 89 to a completely different model denoter.  These post guns not only were not called or stamped 91s but also came with the new neutered thumbhole "sporter" stocks as they called them ... models were things like HK911, SR9s, etc...   A registered HK sear can indeed go into ANY HK9x model host.. 94 (9mm), 93 (5.56), 91 (308)  as wells as the SP89 (9mm) pistol... those are the only 4 host ATF allows the sears to go in.  Monetarily nothing really special with this 91 aside from any other 91 and if he was offered $3k and turned it down then he basically turned down a $800-$1000 profit in today's market.  Unless it's unfired in the box and comes with some accessories in my opinion he's way off market.  Yes a transferable sear can be put into these....and while there technically is a finite number left, I haven't seen them too difficult to find... see one on the boards every week or so.... been so for last 15-20 years that I've been looking.   There was a few years back in the 70s where a company called MARS imported them for HK. Some of these early 91s came in with factory correct push pin front holes.  ATF quickly jumped on this and now that is why the HK9 series semis have that shelf up front.  These MARS do have value to some as you could physically, although not legally, and extremely easily put an unmodified factory full auto trigger group on them with no modifications necessary.  There was extra value in these back in the late 80s and early 90s as the proverbial SHTF nuts liked the idea they could have a legal semi and maybe another family member keep some legal full auto parts separately that would simply pop on and off with no modification should the end of the word come... we didn't really worry about Zombies back then ;o).  There is no way to put a full auto trigger group on the later semi HK/clone series host without making modifications to the trigger pack itself that immediately constitutes an illegal contraband machinegun.  Fast track to a nice stay at your nearest pound-me-in-the-ars federal prison.   So, as Dolomite stated, if it wasn't papered on a Form 1 or Form 2 as a machinegun before 1986 the host itself will never be considered a machinegun... you can purchase a registered sear (currently ~$25-30k) or a 02 SOT manuf. like myself can convert them into a post sample machinegun available only to law enforcement/govt entities.   HK sears were great conversion items as one could have 1 legal sear pack and by swapping ejectors and hammer springs only, you could legally move that pack from HK host to host.  So 1 sear would work across all the different caliber hosts. The sears themselves had the actual serial number engraved on them but most conversions would also have this serial number engraved on the host weapon.  It's impossible to see the sear once it's inside the pack so most hosts had this info on the receiver for psuedo form validation.     Another note is if a host has a sear pack on it, it can then have any length barrel, stock, etc... there was a term with these HK sears, similar to AR drop in sears where the host would be married to the sear on the form registration.  When you see them term divorce the sear, it simply means folks who would want to separate the sear from the host would have to get that host removed and legal w/out the sear.  A short barreled host with a sear would have to have it's receiver registered as a SBR if one wished to move that sear away from the host.    Many original conversion back in the 80s had these associations to keep from paying a double $200 maker fee to make the machinegun sear and another to make a SBR while at it... when you were talking about a $600 host, a $5 sear, another $200 that wasn't explicitly necessary cut deep into your profits back then.  Oh the good old days.. back in the 80s the MAC10s were $199... man then $200 to transfer it ... what we wouldn't give ;o)
  2. Heck man, you're right in Barrett's back yard... M98, MRAD ... come on ... ;o)   What do you consider long range?  Asking as some of your options above will limit your maximum effective range.    I concur with Glock55.  A Remington 700 is hard to beat as a LPR for that price range. You can get anything and everything for them...and customize them out the ARS! ... nothing wrong with the others I think you'll just find more options and accessories with the remmy. 308 is a perfect round to learn on and stay on when you're there too.  I've seen some great shooting stock Savage 10s too but I'd lean towards the 700 if given the option.   I've been extremely fortunate and have had some of what I consider the very best in the field. I've owned Barretts - both 50s and 338s, Accuracy Internationals 308s and my current rig is a Desert Tactical Arms deployment kit.  It can go from either SRS or COVERT setup and can swap between 308 and 338 Lapua calibers faster than you can read this post.... will I ever truly need that functionality, probably not... but I also know I'll never need anything above it either so it's a comfortable feeling..   My $.02 for what it's worth...   1) - buy once, cry once ... if you want something, really want it... save and get it... don't settle...  it was important for me to learn on the rig I would be carrying and keeping.  You'll find many guns may be similar but something as little as magazine release, safety location , bolt throw angle, etc... can and will mess you up as you step from rifle to rifle.  2) - read, read and re-READ.... I've spontaneously purchased so much crap before I really knew if I definitely needed it or wanted it... and if you're like me, you rarely ever get your money back ... I buy high and sell low ;o) 3) - don't skimp on glass... be prepared to spend as much or even more on a quality scope.  You'll want something that is going to track accurately and consistently or you mind as well be using iron sights.    Check out snipershide.com  ... they have a great training section and I learned a lot when I was starting out.  You'll see a ton of great pics to get you thinking and there's guys out there that forgot more last week about shooting than I'll ever learn in my lifetime.  Some of those gents live it everyday ... wealth of knowledge out there and I've found they're never too busy to help a neophyte.   If you ever get down in the Knoxville area I'd be happy to take you out and let you shoot the DTA.  It's a tack driver and a pleasure to shoot.  Being a bullpup it's a different concept but in it's covert form, the still respectible 16" barrel doesn't extend any further than the end of the scope!  It has a 16" and 22" 308 barrels and a 26" 338 Lapua and all 3 will hold a 3/8 MOA with this poor shooter behind the helm... would love to put them in more capable hands and see what they can really do.   Good luck!
  3.     Saw this-> https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2014/01/07/2014-00039/definition-of-adjudicated-as-a-mental-defective-and-committed-to-a-mental-institution   it's the ATF's most recent article
  4. No, drafting the trust comes first... I think you do (or you did) have transfer a single asset (ball point pin, dollar bill, etc. - anything) to initiate/activate... sorry, it's too cold and I can't remember proper nomenclature (you're basically bringing the trust to life so to speak) but you have the trust drafted before transfering your first NFA object.   However for any chance to be grandfathered you would have to had filed your form 4s and them be received prior to any rules becoming effective.... so creating the trust and doing nothing with it until after the new rules go into effect you'd definitely lose any chance of being grandfathered.    I JUST got my 1st trust form 4 back for a customer SINCE all this rule mess started.  They had been coming in prior in 5-6 months... this particular item it was 11 months!!! (filed in Feb).  I'm not saying that's the norm but you can definitely see the impact the proposed changes have made with folks rushing to get stuff sent in hopes of being grandfathered.  This was manual filing too before the eforms.   I've got 3-4 eform 4s in flight now... have yet to get any of those back.  My eform 3s I've seen great success with those so I'm hopeful... one transfer in 10 days from filing to shipping item to another dealer.
  5. Anyone know how the barrel swap works on the MRADs? I had a M98 Bravo several years ago... loved the gun, especially the looks but I tell you this DTA I have, I can swap barrels in 10-15 seconds if I needed to,,, taking my time only takes like 30 ;o). Meaning I can go from a 16" 308 to a 26" 338 lickity split! I love the look of the Barretts and if the calibers are truely 'conversions' to the receiver (as they originally claimed they would) and not simpy 'models' I too would say FINALLY ;o) .. if not, I'd think it's going to be a hard sell to compete against the AIs, DTAs, Sakos, etc..
  6. Steve, yes, you'll need to complete that before you send it in.    Best of luck to ya!
  7. Chief or Sheriff or their designee of YOUR residence... Our sheriff signs our personal Forms all the time.  Shouldn't have mattered.  I can only expect either the employee did not live within the city limits or the chief had someone else sign for him and it wasn't properly disclosed.   If you live within the city limits either will do, if you don't the Sheriff would be best.   There's others that can sign as well... not as popular as they once were.. I had a DA sign once before and when I was in SC our district solicitor was a good friend and did all of mine...
  8. They will NOT accept 2 pages but it is perfectly ok to print your own form as long as page 1 and page 2 (front and back) are on the same page.  They stopped allowing 2 page forms years ago b/c some were getting CLEO signoff on suppressors and then putting the back of one form with the front of a machinegun form, etc... Lot of the crap we deal with now b/c of a few bad apples...   If you do not have a duplex printer just print page 1, flip it over and print page 2.  The ATF forms are adobe PDFs and will allow you to type in your information. Be sure to pick up the cert of compliance forms too.
  9. Best to thread the can against a perpendicular shoulder on the barrel (or spacer if it's machined properly) rather than thread the end of the barrel against the inside of the can.  Otherwords, the barrel shouldn't bottom out in the suppressor, the can should lock against a shoulder machined behind the threads on the barrel.   I'm on your side of Oak Ridge (20 min up the road) if you want to swing by one day, I'd be happy to look at it for you.  PM me and I'll give you my info.
  10. Ha didn't see the forest for the trees :o) duh! Thanks Kris. Picked up a sweet DTA last week. 338/308 deployment kit. USO scope. It's nice. Still liking the AI though. Got a Eberlestock GS2 and she folds up so nicely in the back of it. Even without the scabbard deployed. Let me know when you guys are shooting again and I'll fill the truck up and come on down.
  11. Yessir!   My Covert loves the FGMMs as well - suppressed and non.  What's your powder and charge on these?.. sure be nice to duplicate the factory rounds and save a few pennies... getting pretty expensive to feed this thing and I just picked up 338 this week.... don't even want to start thinking about that one ;o)   I've been trying to develop a nice sub sonic recipe for my AI.  Had started with the 180 RNs but I think I'm going to step up to the 208 AMAX... heard they do well in the coverts.   Thanks for sharing.
  12. All downhill from there TGR! ... pocket change is all that's left... glad to see you're knocking it out highest to lowest ;o)   Heck, if you have visioned what you're wanting that's the hardest part... my problem is in between the ordering and receiving I change my mind 57 times! ;o)
  13. Main thing with the castle nut is if the tube doesn't have a shoulder and/or you can't fully seat it without it interfering with the buffer retainer. I've seen many tubes you must index to properly locate for the retainer. In these cases the tube didn't seat against anything and would freely turn left and right. I wouldn't shoot anything that wouldn't seat fully myself. You're going to wind up with the buffer spring inside your lower and/or unnecessary wear and tear on the tube's thread area of the lower. If it seats and you can get a decent lockdown tightness with it you'll be fine. In the pic above you can see that tube has a shoulder. That's the type you'd want to be sure you had. Something that provides some negative resistance when tightening to put Newton's theory to work :o)
  14. You'll need to complete what's called a Form 1 (application to "make" a firearm).  If you're doing this in your personal name, you'll have to get 2 sets of fingerprints and 2 photos of yourself (facial shots).  The best/simpliest way for photos is go to CVS and ask them to take passport photos.. they're perfect size.   You'll have to schedule a visit with your Sheriff's Department / Local Police Department.  There's a section on the back of the form you need to have the chief law enforcement official (Sheriff/Chief) of your jurisdiction sign the forms.  TN is a must-sign state so you shouldn't have any issues there although there are many local municipalities that are unfamiliar with NFA forms and such.   You can get the forms off the ATF website.  The form has a front and back that MUST be printed on the same page... so you'll either need a duplex printer or print one side, feed the other in and print the 2nd... ATF will not accept forms on separate pages.   The final package will consist of ...   - (2) Form 1s - (2) Certification of Citizenship - (2) D-258 fingerprint cards - local PD can do these for you - $5-$10 - (2) Passport size photos   ATF does everything in duplicate.... just keep this in mind.   - Chief LEO signature on back of Form 1s - $200 check made payable to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives   After the CLEO signs, you put everything in an envelope and mail ... the approval time right now is around 8-9 months.  A form will be sent back to you either approved or not ... if not, there's usually an error form they send telling you what is wrong, get it corrected and send back in ... WHEN approved and NOT before, you can then mount a stock on the pistol.   At some point in between filling and approval, you'll need to get your Name, City and State engraved in the pistol reciever somewhere.  You're basically manufacturing a new weapon so your info has to be on the receiver.  The existing model # and serial # can be left from the pistol and used.   Just some small details here and there.   Send me an email and I'll email the Form 1 and Certification forms.... If you want to proceed I'll be happy to take your information and fill out the Form 1 for you.  I have them in PDF format here and can type your info in within a few minutes.  Be happy to help.   I'm slammed this week but if you want to you can call me sometime next week and I'll be happy to go over everything with you.  None is uber difficult but there are a few steps that have to happen before others, etc..    I have a NFA/Title 2 web page on my website that has a little information about all of this if you have time go read it.. may answer some stuff in the interim.   Stay Safe!
  15. Keal,   14.5 with pinned and welded compensator perfectly legal so long as overall maintains at least 16 inches... nothing about ports applies.. total length to end of compensator.   You'll be fine
  16.   Ha, come and spend some more money Daniel... be good to see ya again!
  17.   Hi Garufa,   I'm one of the original 3 FFLs and in your neck of the woods if you so choose.  Offering ALL TGO'ers my LEO/govt xfer rates ... $20/one, $25/two ... I know it's going to be some work but I'm happy to help you guys out and finally put some faces to a few more names ;o)   I've already spoken to a few folks today about these but those who will be using me. I'd like to kindly ask that at some point you PM or email me your contact info and what you ordered and I'll keep a master list.  If you ordered uppers or other parts I believe the plan is to ship everything to the FFL so the list will be something I do to just assure items get tagged properly when they arrive.   Thanks guys, looking forward to meeting you all!
  18. Remi's a great guy!   http://hydroprintservices.com/   I've seen his work and it's excellent... thinking of having my AI done as well... just not sure what I want yet ;o)
  19. Yessir Kris. I'm ready! Another SOT had me cut the SAW up and sell it as a parts kit. Well he hit me pretty hard over the head with some cash but it was still tough to do. The 60s are fun to build, nothing much that doesn't simply rivet together but that SAW man, FN don't share nuttin and everything is welded on it, trunion, rails, etc. it was a fun build and real accomplishment when it cycled it's first belt through.
  20. Yeah it's a postie. Good and bad. I guess the good is I'm not too concerned to shoot then piss out of it :o) Trying to get it up to a full 4. Still need the railed top, feed tray, stock and trigger housing. Nothing shabby with the Shrike. I'd have one had I not built a 249 too. Born, bred and belt fed :o)
  21. Someone say 60? Slooooooowwwwwllly getting her converted to an 'E'. Loving the new short barrel, foregrip, rail and bipod setup.
  22. Yessir... cold bore shots definitely different.  I have a $10k bolt action Accuracy International rifle.  My groups start to open up around 15-20 shots in.  But, the rifle is configured as a covert rifle (short barrel, suppressed).  So being fair to it, it was designed for a very specific purpose and does that very well ... those 1st 5-10 shots almost in the same freaking hole!!!  sure they could be from someone who shoots a whole lot better than me ;o)
  23. If you wish, here's a link to the proposed changes..... you can also place your comments - (look on right side of page).   If you have a constructive comment, by all means place it!! ... no BS stuff please as this will just hurt the cause.  May not make any difference but you can at least voice your opinion.   http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=ATF-2013-0001-0001   As far as what this will do to the pipeline if it goes effective, NO one can tell you that right now.. even the BATF.  We're just going to have to ride it out.  I have had a slew of folks, thinking they'll be grandfathered in, buying stuff on trusts these last few weeks .... possibly ... but it would not shock me either if they threw these all back and requested the additional artifacts.   Keep in mind, it's taking months now for forms to even go pending.   I'm telling folks to 'assume' the worse and that this will become the new norm... understand though even if, trusts will STILL be valuable tools for multi-ownership, probate streamlining, etc...  If you're thinking about getting one just be sure you're ok with the possibility they may do nothing for you in regards to signoff, prints and photos and base your decision on the other fruits they afford.    jcoosi, what cans did you get?  I know it seems strange but I bet you'll enjoy the 22 can the most... It will give you the biggest WOW factor.... I STILL, after all these years, prefer shooting 22s suppressed.  The other cans will be tools you find useful and enjoyable but that 22 is going to be the one you show off the most to others ;o)   Welcome to the dark side!  Forever will it be your destiny!
  24.   Yessir, these 33 rounders I have don't last but a nano-second ... they shoot about 2000 RPM ... simply ridiculous ... I sell them mostly as a defensive weapon to the agencies... one of those kick the door in, we stepped into a hornet's nest, let's back out and get back to the car for some serious backup ;o)  Never, ever an offensive weapon ... impossible!
  25.   None... 18s came out after 1986 ;o) ... I make sears for any glock now but 18 would be my favorite, then my sears the 2nd.. but above ALL ... the ABSOLUTE best Glock model ever (I'm shocked no one has said this) is a FREE one!!! ;o)
