  1. Schakowsky: Assault Weapons Ban 'Just the Beginning'   Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of the Democratic Party’s leadership in the House of Representatives, suggested to Jason Mattera at a Feb. 13 women’s rights rally that plans for an assault weapons ban and private-sales background checks were only the beginning of a broader gun control agenda extending to handguns as well.   Schakowsky evidently did not recognize Mattera, a conservative video journalist and senior investigative reporter for Talk Radio Network, who infamously confronted Vice President Joe Biden in the Capitol. (Mattera introduced himself to Schakowsky by name but did not indicate that he was filming or that he is conservative.) She spoke to Mattera as if he were a fellow gun control enthusiast--and Mattera played along, eliciting answers about Schakowsky’s enthusiasm for gun control.   “We want everything on the table,” Schakowsky told Mattera. “This is a moment of opportunity. There’s no question about it.”   One poignant exchange was as follows:   Schakowsky: We’re on a roll now, and I think we’ve got to take the--you know, we’re gonna push as hard as we can and as far as we can.   Mattera: So the assault weapons ban is just the beginning?   Schakowsky: Oh absolutely. I mean, I’m against handguns. We have, in Illinois, the Council Against Handgun... something [Violence]. Yeah, I’m a member of that. So, absolutely.     In another exchange, Schakowsky proposed allowances for states and municipalities to ban guns--though such laws have been repeatedly rejected by the Supreme Court:   Mattera: We’ll never get a handgun ban with the Second Amendment as stated.   Schakowsky: I don’t know. I don’t know that we can’t. And there may be an allowance, once again, for communities--I have communities in my district that prohibited handguns within their borders. The rights of municipalities and states to view that as a sensible way to keep people safe--I don’t think it’s precluded.     When Mattera asked why legislators were not pressing for a handgun ban, given that most murders are committed with handguns, Schakowsky replied: “Because we’re not going to be able to win that. Not now.” She went on to explain why background checks were a useful interim policy, arguing that they would “address any kind of weapon.”   Schakowsky’s remarks about plans for broader gun control are not the first time she has revealed the long-term goal behind short-term policy debates. She has a tendency to do so when speaking to apparently sympathetic audiences. In 2009, she told a crowd that the goal of Obamacare would be to “put the private insurance industry out of business.”   Officially, Democrats--including Schakowsky--hew to the party line as laid down by the president, which pledges support for the Second Amendment and for gun ownership in rural communities where hunting and shooting are viewed as traditional pastimes.   Gun owners fear that the Sandy Hook-inspired gun control measures before Congress--none of which would have stopped the mass shooting at Sandy Hook--are a prelude to broader regulations, including the banning of handguns and the eventual registration and confiscation of firearms, despite earnest assurances by Democrats to the contrary.   The Democratic Party has taken a hard line on guns recently, with President Obama’s strategist, David Axelrod, joining New York mayor Michael Bloomberg in backing gun control enthusiast Robin Kelly over former Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, in the recent primary to replace former Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Illinois. Kelly has promised to be a “leader” in “banning guns.”   http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/03/11/Schakowsky-Assault-Weapons-Ban-is-Just-the-Beginning     ***********************************   There is a video of the whole awesome exchange included in the online story. They are getting brazen, and careless.
  2.   Actually, no. There ARE people dedicated to put in the time just to screw with folks for practicing a religion.  And no, it would be incorrect to assume the university, especially Vanderbilt University, would take appropriate action to address issues such as that.   It is possible, however, that Vanderbilt Catholic, one of the larger groups exiled by Vanderbilt, came out of all of this smelling like a rose. They got bounced from Vanderbilt Campus proper, and the Bishop of Nashville gave them Frassati House that is right behind the Cathedral of the Incarnation. (Frassati house is a beautiful old home that also once served as a Vanderbilt fraternity house and now is Catholic Church property)   Frassati House shares a lot line with Vanderbilt, and is in a higher traffic, better place than it ever was when it was on Vanderbilt Campus. They've been re-named University Catholic to not infringe on the august Vandy name, and they serve as many or more students because they also have Belmont and other students using the facility.   The Law of Unintended Consequences at work. Score one for the good guys.     They are at:   2004 Terrace Place, Nashville, TN  37203 Phone: 615.322.0104 http://universitycatholic.org
  3. I'm up for the round one. Subdued or full color doesn't matter so much, maybe one of both.   Mostly looking for something that I can wear out and around, or at a gun show, to help seek out and identify fellow TGO'ers. A lot of good folks out there that I only know by their aliases on the forum.   Clearly, IMO, we need some sort of secret sign or secret handshake. . . .   [Not to change the subject, but I'd really like to see a colored cloisonne pin I can wear in a ball cap, or on a suit-jacket lapel (for the rare times I'm stuck in a suit.)]
  4. Received mine yesterday in good order and is already on the rear window of my Cherokee.
  5. Feinstein: Veterans May Have PTSD And Should Not Be Exempt From Assault Weapons Ban   At a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on Thursday, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) opposed an amendment to her Assault Weapons Ban legislation that would allow military veterans to continue to buy the firearms that would be banned. Feinstein says a veteran may be mentally ill and should be prevented from purchasing firearms.   SEN. DIANNE FEINSTEIN: If I understand this, this adds an exemption of retired military. As I understand our bill, no issue has arose in this regard during the 10 years the expired ban was in effect and what we did in the other bill was exempt possession by the United States or a department or agency of the United States. So that included active military. The problem with expanding this is that, you know, with the advent of PTSD, which I think is a new phenomenon as a product of the Iraq War, it’s not clear how the seller or transferrer of a firearm covered by this bill would verify that an individual was a member, or a veteran, and that there was no impairment of that individual with respect to having a weapon like this. So, you know, I would be happy to sit down with you again and see if we could work something out but I think we have to-- if you’re going to do this, find a way that veterans who are incapacitated for one reason or another mentally don’t have access to this kind of weapon.   http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2013/03/08/feinstein_veterans_may_have_ptsd_and_should_not_be_exempt_from_assault_weapons_ban.html     *******************************   Uh-huh. And so it begins. Or continues.   (As he seats his hat firmly on his head, spits tobacco on the ground, and pulls the charging handle on his AR-15.)

  7. The very definition of a side-of-the-road bribe. You should of asked him for a receipt, you can be sure the money and the ticket never made it into the books.
  8. We ran into that in Biloxi, Mississippi in the 60's, because Biloxi, Mississippi was a lot smaller than Keesler Air Force Base and a small town with a big base usually hates or resents the servicemen; a lot of it comes from "nothing's sexier than a man with a steady job" and the GIs got all the local girls and the local guys did without or picked fights they lost. Then, the locals grow up to be cops if not merely gas station attendants or fork-lift drivers and lean on the GIs 'cause they steal all the local girls.   Well, the Keesler Air Force Base commander decided enough was enough. There was a time when they put the whole town of Biloxi off-limits. That worked for a while but everyone was still sullen.   Then, he payed EVERYONE on base at Keesler with nothing but $2 bills. Biloxi was AWASH with $2 bills. No one could make change properly because of all the $2 bills. The whole freakin' Biloxi economy ran on Keesler Air Force Base payrolls and the $2 bills slammed that home and everyone shut-up-and-colored for a while.
  9. A lot of this is post Civil War, when the recently mustered-out United States Colored Troops (USCT) began returning to their states with .58 caliber rifle-muskets and the skill to use them. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas outlines the process in detail in a well-footnoted, scholarly concurring statement in one of the high profile Supreme Court Second Amendment Cases. It is available online, and I might be able to dig it out later.   I think it's in:   http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1521.pdf     Edit:   Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' Concurrence in McDonald v. Chicago is here starting on page 67 of the pdf):   http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1521.pdf
  10. Maybe he's waiting until he can be surrounded by supportive County Sheriffs -- and by young women who have fended off rape attacks with their firearms. I'd pay to see THAT.
  11. Thank you very much for the kind words, but you're the one who set up the neighborhood watch and have it cookin' and the school officials and police cooperating with you. Maybe it's your musician's natural knack for bringing people together. . . .
  12.   Good to hear from you brother! Stay safe, stay aware!
  13. Thanks for this. Never heard of this technique, but makes sense. Have you shared with the local police? I imagine they'd be REALLY interested.   The very act of taking their pictures may make them stay away from your neighborhood.
  14. Hard to catch without a paper bag . . . and salt for their tails . . . course that's Colorado Snipe . . .

  19. Major firearms retailer fleeing from California to Texas By Jessica Chasmar   A major California firearms retailer is packing its bags and getting "the heck out of Dodge" by moving to Texas.   John W. Harrington, who founded Shield Tactical in 2008, decided that California's gun-control regulation is too restrictive for his business, Red Alert Politics reported. Mr. Harrington, originally from Texas, said it was "time to go home."   "The state of California treats all businesses as necessary evils," he said. "They treat those of us in the gun business as just evil. They make it very clear that they don't want us there. It's just that simple."   Shield Tactical originally announced its plan to move on its Facebook page in late February, gaining more than 1,000 likes and shares. It said that its training division "will remain in CA until the legislature outlaws everything."   "I'm not surprised at all," Mr. Harrington said of the support his decision has received, much of which has come from his home state. "People of Texas — it's hard to describe the spirit of Texans."   He said the costs involved in relocating are "well worth it."   Read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/mar/4/major-firearms-retailer-fleeing-california-texas/#ixzz2MgbecxFx     *********************************************   Add another firearms business that can read the handwriting on the wall.   To quote a famous Tennessean:  "You can all go to hell. 22. Zero tolerance academic/educator morons.   The big problem with schools is the principal or the superintendent -- the executive branch -- also takes over judicial functions, such as the suspensions. It is a recipe for tyranny in any government.   They need school courts - with people on the court who have not been lame-brain educators. Let the principal propose a suspension, let a school court carry it out or not carry it out.
  23. .308, i.e. 7.62mm takes the same .308 bullets . . . they're caught up in the craze.
