  1. Ochretoe: Any suggested hikes / things to see in E Tn? Thanks for the posts folks. Just thought I would ask is all, was not planning on toting my M4 (although it would not hurt my feelings at all to carry a long gun). There is more research comming on the academic side talking about the problem of growers. Its a sad thing, but then again it is no surprise. Sorry for the delay and short response - the silly season is upon us after all. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas.
  2. This was simply a thread asking about the law. I am not asking for opinions on it.

That said. Do you own an AR? How about a weapon with more than six rounds in it? A semi automatic of any kind? Why would you need that kind of firepower? The argument makes the antigunners argument for them.

I ask because drug dealers grow weed on public land, a side effect of confiscation laws is an increase in it. I ask because of large animals that I enjoy but which may take it in their head to have me for lunch. I ask because I was curious. I ask because it is my right. I ask because I have been in situations where I could not annoy you fine folks on the boards had I not the ability to defend myself with lethal force and in the woods there could be a larger standoff distance if engaged by a hostile human. I ask because I cannot dial 911 from many day hikes much less a campsite two days hike in the woods.

I do not appreciate OC being referred to as stupid. We are all gun owners and we should be respectful. I do not and have not OC'd although I consider it for the backcountry. It is their right to do so. Agree or disagree, please be respectful.
  3. BSF was the one I was thinking of and put in there wrong and that was one of the reasons why - at least for a bit I am not sure how quick we are going to move. Always nice if you don't make the mileage and its getting dark that you can call it quits and set up camp. There are so many things I have not seen in the Smokys though! That and the fact I have a couple of books on that area already so it makes it easier to plan ahead. Need to get some USGS maps of BSF and start planning some trips there too though.

I would be interested if we could get a group to go sometime. Would be nice to share the trail with folks I think.

  4. I wrote a rather lenglty email to State Senator Niceley and basically said I was concerned with his approach because I wanted the right to preserve my life in the event that some criminal started that in my classroom. He replied within a couple of hours and said he agreed completely. Unforunatly, and I explained it to him when I wrote him, I work in this state and so I do not vote. I was still thankfull for the short response from him though.

  5. Howdy all. I have been perusing the forums and the internet looking for information in camping. I am over in Knoxville and have day hiked the GSMNP during the past couple of summers. Finally the lady and I have put together camping kit and if the weather isn't horrid we will do a shakedown sometime after Christmas. So I had some specific trails I am looking at, and wanted to know if anyone had any general thoughts on backcountry sites, trails, carry, equipment, anything at all they would like to share. I also wondered if anyone still got together from the forums to camp - there was a thread from January through June and I wondered had folks gone ahead and gone and are they interested in adding another?

I am looking at Savage Gulf Natural Area, Big Fork, and in GSMNP the Big Creek out to site 37 and the Tunnel Loop to the Goldmine Loop Trail. The last one includes a long hike through a tunnel that has a bit of disgruntled "artwork" that we want to check out.

I am still pack hunting and since I am using some rather bulky sleeping bags I am looking at the Eberlestock Destroyer or Battleship. I want a dedicated sleeping bag compartment, exterior pockets to hold certain items, a lid top, something other than blaze orange type colors, a little rugged construction, lots of compression straps, and lash points. I have heard lots of good things about them and this is the pack I keep coming back to after a year of trying packs on and looking at them. I am afraid I am going to have to go with the larger one but the compression straps at least make that doable. That way I can use it for winter as well as summer. I have a 100 liter pack and that sleeping bag is taking up a lot of room, but it is what I have and am going to use. At least during summer that will shrink too.

As far as carrying: I am looking at the ribz front pack as a solution. I will probably carry a H&K USPC .40. I usually carry a 1911 but that is a bit heavy and large. I may get a serpa to put on the molle attachments of the hip belt I am just not that comfortable open carrying because of folks that are insecure with it causing me to have to introduce myself with the authorities.

So thoughts? Comments? Trail / campsite info and suggestions for East Tn?

  6. I was reading up some on backpacking as I am planning some trips in the new year and I came across some folks that think you can carry a long gun in the park - and out west this does indeed seem to be allowed iaw local laws. I have never seen it, and in fact I am still wrestling with the best way to carry my sidearm as I am just not comfortable with open carrying (to many antigun folks I suspect would cause me not to enjoy my hike without a discussion with park rangers. But it did make me curious. What is the law for TN, and for NC for that matter. Anyone familiar with it? State parks v national parks v forests?

  7. Compromise... Shall not be infringed... The founders did not want compromise for the 2A. If they did it would have been a law not a amendment.

Compromise is fine, but Sandy Hook is a result of a deranged person. It can not be stopped. It will not be until we are all perfect and can play God with people's minds. We simply do not know how the brain functions well enough to say yes we can give a diagnosis that we can use to lock up someone.

Why not go back to allowing carry constitutionally so we have a chance in hell of defending ourselves and our children.

I am not a child. I can make big boy decisions. Giving up my AR is preposterous. Some 300000 were sold in 2008. Of those how many lives were taken by them?

C'mon as a gun owner a person has no one to blame but themselves when they wake up and go well crud. My wife and daughter were raped and murdered and I cannot hunt because all I have is an illegal steak knife I buried in the back yard three years ago when they came for them. I cannot drive to the hospital because cars were made illegal because of the 30,000 annual deaths from them.

No, stop the madness folks. Calm your reps, go to protests and voice yourselves calmly, rationally, and respectfully. Take someone to the range and teach them. Share the sport and the capability to be a citizen.
  8. Where are lawmakers with guts? Seriously where are they? Where are we as citizens?

I take up the discussion every time it comes up. We must, must, bring education to those around us. The gun control crowd are yelling louder than we are. We MUST protect our rights with words and teach folks that it is bad to own weapons and that bearing them allows us the natural right to life.

The holidays are upon us. Continue your own education and speak to family and friends about it. Share it. Begin the swing of the pendulum back to common sense.

Ask the question: what if someone in that room or the room next to it were able to engage him with a concealed weapon? Stop the surrender of the right to live. Stop dependence on others. Begin in your circles, it will help the next time these silent "pro-gun" politicians are up for reelection.

What a horrible tragedy to be used by those who would enslave us.
  9. Part of security is public relations. It allows folks to be eyes and ears for the agency. Is also allows for faith in the agency, and better relations which leads to better use of psychological screening.

TSA is an epic fail because of the way they were stood up nearly overnight and what that meant to hiring requirements. They continue to fail because of fear of them. They also fail at least weekly on public relations and or providing security.

No right to fly? No right to walk outside your home or breath either (none are specifically mentioned in the US Constitution). Now is there a heightened scrutiny at airports, you betchya. But they can do it with public assistance much better by not raising the ire of that same public. It is a leadership problem that has been pervasive since their first day of operation which is sad because there are many folks that are doing the best they can.
  10. Actually it did allow you to do just that after a fashion. That's how folks carried when it was written, and probably they carried a long gun as pistols were not that common until well after even the west was "won." In some states that is still acceptable without a permit.

Another issue there that we have is that we have incorporated rights to apply to the states. They are natural rights that are yours by existing. Now I am of the opinion that the 2A is really about having a right to self defense, but what it says is that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. That is pretty clear language which we as a nation have clouded pretty heavily with laws that, well infringe upon that right. There are huge amounts of federal legislation that apply to it outside of state laws and regulations. The Constitution is there to protect us from the federal, and through incorporation, the states.

Btw I could not agree more about the ACW being repeated.

Good God, who is disputing their right to say anything?[/quote]
Go back and look at the second group of four or five posts. I forget the exact wording but they basically called them idiots. That is not only not a useful point but inflammatory. What is behind that an how does it help or hurt us? Seems to me that it is pretty clear that some folks think if you express an opinion contrary to theirs that you are an idiot.

Just pointing out that while I am not so sure it is a great idea or not, it's their right and folks shouldn't be insulting about it. That leads down the road of not just chilling speech but worse things.
