  1. All I'm seeing is tax money being spent on U.S. businesses, hopefully keeping more Americans employed. I'd rather have my tax dollars go toward American employees with Federal and Remington rather than the wonderful citizens of Pakistan.
  2. Yes. Not to confuse things further, but there is also a 581/ 681 which is a fixed sight version. I have a 686-3, and it happens to be the greatest gun I have ever owned. You can't go wrong with an old S&W in excellent condition. It will only go up in value if you decide to part with it.
  3. Based on the story, I'd say roll up the window and drive away.
  4. To compare apples to apples, the $15 transfer does not include the $10 background check, so a true price is $25. Still the best price I know of in Middle TN, but only $5 cheaper than the Saddle Shop which is a lot closer to Brentwood. I usually use the Saddle Shop but still occasionally do business with D&T because I believe in supporting our sponsors.
  5. D&T Arms (board sponsor) has the best price and are good to deal with. If you don't want to drive to Rivergate, I've had good luck with the Saddle Shop in Triune.
  6. My wife also has a Bersa .380. She handled a lot of guns but only the Bersa felt right in her hands. My favorite thing is the reliability. Based on the price point you would think "cheap" but its really not. So far it has been malfunction-free which is all you hope for in a self-defense handgun.
  7. Careful! That description is going to hit too close to home for many of our board members! Its just a lot easier (and more fun) to take uninformed pot-shots at the stereotypical .gov worker.
  8. Every federal agency has an Office of Inspector General (OIG) which does criminal investigations specific to their agency's mission. NOAA has a law enforcement branch to protect the fisheries. SSA has Special Agents who primarily investigate disability and welfare fraud. The people who commit welfare fraud often have lengthy criminal records and might not be happy to have investigators knock on their door. The ammo is used for carry and quals four times per year. The 174,000 rounds of HP will probably bid at no more than 30 cents a round. Not an outrageous yearly training budget for a law enforcement agency with close to 300 agents. Here is a recent local case investigated by Veteran's Affairs and SSA OIG agents: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2012/jul/24/prosecutor-knox-couple-faked-military-service-to/
  9. I have both the 4" 686 and a 2 1/2" 66. Aesthetically, both are great looking guns and I would sell neither. If I had to chose one, the 686 wins hands-down. Maybe I lucked out with an exceptional gun but my 686 is the BEST...GUN...EVER! The action, balance and accuracy is the best of any gun I've ever owned. I think the 4" barrel is ideal for target shooting. The short-barreled 66 is fun too, but not the same. If you were planning on carrying the 66 you might be disappointed. Even though it has the 2.5 in. Barrel, the weight felt like a full-sized revolver. In summary, if you can afford both,do it. If not, I wouldn't give up the 686.
  10. It could be a lot worse. In 1991, DC had a whopping 481 homicides with a population slightly smaller than Memphis. I was living up there at the time and knew what areas to stay out of, and what lifestyle choices to avoid. Probably just like Memphis. The problem is with so much crime, there is always the potential for spill-over.
  11. I also use the Saddle Shop which is right down the road from my house. When I buy a gun, I get the seller's e-mail address, send it to Mike's e-mail address, and the FFL is taken care of. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays and their rate slightly varies depending on whose behind the counter. (Some charge tax, some don't.) Overall, very satisfied.
  12. Just got my ammo order today from the last free shipping deal. My budget is shot. Free shipping on ammo is hard to pass up!
  13. Undoubtedly those injuries were caused when Zimmerman used the back of his head to launch his attack on Trayvon's knuckles.
  14. 18 USC 1752 was passed under the Nixon administration in 1971, and has only slightly changed since then. The latest revision (HR347) ads the word "knowingly" to the statute and added areas protected by USSS; otherwise its similar to the same law that has been on the books for both Republican and Democratic Presidents for the last 40 years. It passed both the House and Senate without a problem because its a long standing law which doesn't have a history of abuse. There's plenty the Obama administration has done which is questionable. This isn't one of them.
  15. Well l guess if freedom equals throwing malatov cocktails at the conventions, then I guess I'm willing to forego that "right".
  16. HR347 is a misdemeanor punishable by no more than one year in prison, UNLESS the person carries a weapon and/or commits serious bodily harm. Then it becomes a felony.
  17. Here's the Tennessee law which is comparable to the federal law. The TN law has been in effect for years: 39-17-305. Disorderly conduct. (a) A person commits an offense who, in a public place and with intent to cause public annoyance or alarm: (1) Engages in fighting or in violent or threatening behavior; (2) Refuses to obey an official order to disperse issued to maintain public safety in dangerous proximity to a fire, hazard or other emergency; or (3) Creates a hazardous or physically offensive condition by any act that serves no legitimate purpose. A person also violates this section who makes unreasonable noise that prevents others from carrying on lawful activities. © A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor. HR 347 is nothing more than a disorderly conduct statute that the Secret Service can enforce. (Some states don't give Secret Service agents "peace officer" status, so they are not allowed to make arrests for state law violations.)
  18. Good idea. Then I could go ahead and marry my eleven year-old niece.
  19. I bought from Robertson's a few months ago. I purchased a corrections trade in revolver and liked the detailed pictures they have on Guns America. When I called to make credit card payment, I asked to buy a new set of grips and was told they would ship with the gun. I picked up the gun from my ffl and noticed no grips were in the box. I guess that distracted me from paying closer inspection to the weapon. When I got home, I discovered they sent me the wrong gun. The gun they shipped me had numerous aftermarket engravings which is exactly what I didn't want. It turned out they picked up the wrong stock number (5445 instead of 5545) and I have no idea why the grips didn't come. (They never charged me and l found the same grips online for a better price so I didn't make an issue of it.) They did take steps to correct the mistake, and a week later I had the right gun. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't done right the first time, but happy they corrected their mistake without me having to scream and fight. I guess if I found something I wanted, I'd use them again but check more closely before accepting delivery.
  20. I don't think this board is full of cop-haters. My issue has always been when there is a rush to judgement without looking at both sides of any issue. Yes, some of the articles/comments might have gotten under my skin because I felt SOME of the comments were uninformed. I agree cops do misbehave, I've seen it firsthand. But I also believe its not as widespread as the media reports. Even this news report uses inflammatory wording to make the cops look like villians. Why is it the "Stockton PD beating", instead of "Parolee grabs cops gun"? For the record, I feel I've seen enough of the Kelly beating to be sickened, and I'm glad the officers will be brought to trial.
  21. Very interesting. I guess I kind of like the way the news story was done. After showing only the second half of the incident, you get all the sidewalk pundits commenting on how the police should have "talked to the guy." If it wasn't for the home video, this would have looked like clear police brutality to most. I always wonder how these "you should have talked to him" types would have really handled the situation if they were in the officer's shoes.
  22. I detect sarcasm, or at least I hope so!
  23. Maybe my use of "tin foil" was a bit harsh; I actually feel sad for the "govt is watching me" or "the world will end on 12/12/12" groups. That's just one more stress to deal with in their lives that I don't. I have enough problems worrying if the plumber is going to overcharge me or will gas prices go up before I take my summer vacation, etc. No need to add further stressors in my life for things i consider far-fetched.
