Tell me this isn't payola- The IRS giving bonuses
diablo982 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
You mean the pay rate they agreed to which is now being reduced by 10-15% by their employer? There was no mention of straight across the board "bonuses" for all the employees who meet the basic requirements of the job. I agree that bonuses should be paid for those who go above and beyond, but take issue with your definition of tying it to income generation. If a firefighter takes initiative, researches the latest innovations in HAZMAT response, prepares a training program, and teaches all the stations in the county, what income has he generated? If the chief recommends him for a $100 bonus, is he out of line? -
Tell me this isn't payola- The IRS giving bonuses
diablo982 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'm pretty sure it was government employees from BATF who processed your C&R licence in under three weeks. They don't get pay raises, bonuses and many are getting furloughed. What would be an acceptable form of compensation? I get the anger towards the IRS (and BATF for Fast and Furious) but am starting to get tired of the accusation that EVERYONE who works for the gov. as being useless. Its the same type of sweeping generalizations the libs make by calling us all "gun nuts". -
Road rage participant proudly defends his honor
diablo982 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I read a story last week about a road rage incident in Maryland. An off-duty district attorney investigator from NJ was visiting family near Annapolis, driving in his Kia mini-van with wife and kids. While heading back to New Jersey, he cut off another motorist. Letting his emotions get the best of him, the other motorist pulled along side the mini-van and attempted to run it off the road. The investigator returned the gesture, and upped the ante by waving his gun. The mini-van pulled over to let the other motorist continue on, but the motorist pulled over 150 feet ahead. The motorist thought about it and decided the best course of action to deal with an armed, agitated person is to jump out of his car and charge him. Seeing an unarmed agitated person coming at him from 150 feet away, the investigator decided to draw his gun, exit his mini-van and wait. When the other motorist closed to within 6 feet, the investigator fired two rounds from his .45; the first round striking the leg and the second hitting center mass. Now the irate motorist is dead, and the investigator is sitting in jail on a million dollar bond, charged with second degree murder. Road rage with a single participant is bad enough. Hopefully one of the parties can use common sense and good judgement to defuse the situation before it escalates to something both parties regret. -
Wife accepts gift of Sig P238 after a long search for pistol!
diablo982 replied to QuietDan's topic in General Chat
Nice story. I have one on the way to my LGS, which will be my wife's new carry gun. She had a bersa .380 and loved it, but always struggled with the slide. The reviews for the P238 all indicated the slide was easy to manipulate. Can't wait until it comes in! -

S&W model 686 I bought as a present to myself on my 21st birthday. The double-action is as smooth as butter and it has the best single-action I've ever felt. Its still my favorite gun and I will never part with it.

Couldn't agree more. I notice most of the cop-bashing stories on this forum are picked up from news articles. When I read threads about TGO members interacting with LEO's (usually HCP-related contacts) the majority of the stories are positive. Sure there are bad cops, but not nearly as many as the media would have you believe.

Graphic about ammo prices of the last 7 years.
diablo982 replied to wewoapsiak's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I get the November 2008 and December 2012 spikes, but can't recall what event jumped the price in the summer of 2009. Anyone care to enlighten me? -
Yep. By 5:30 its already out of stock. That's the one I really wanted, so I'll keep checking to see if they get more. Looks like these are the Victoria Police trade-ins again.

The Bill of Rights was written for Dzhokar Tsarnaev
diablo982 replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in General Chat
Twelve hours before and blocks away an MIT Officer was sitting in his car and approached by two harmless civilians. One "civilian" suddenly pulled a gun and shot him in the head. An hour later these same subjects shot another officer and threw IEDs at them. I'd say the officers had every reason to be on edge. This isn't any everyday situation and in my opinion was closer to Afghanistan/Iraq than Suburbia. -

I'm assuming this was taken between the nighttime shootout and the point he was found in the boat. The LEO'S/National Guard were sweeping the streets looking for someone who already shot two LEO's and threw bombs at them. I have to question the intelligence of the photographer pointing an unknown object at the officers under the circumstances. I'm pretty sure our soldiers on patrol in Afghan villages would point a weapon at an open window if something was being pointed at them as well. -
Last week my boss was showing me an e-mail from Cheaper Than Dirt advertising an optics-ready M&P sport for the bargain price of $1,799. I've told him for a long time not to do business with CTD due to their history of gouging. He has finally seen the light.

Unimpressed with police work in Boston
diablo982 replied to jgradyc's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I love the Monday morning quarterbacking from people who have never worked a criminal investigation, or hunted a dangerous fugitive hiding in an unknown location who is intent on killing you. I know nothing about the storing of fertilizer, so I will leave criticism of West, TX to people with more knowledge than me. Regarding Boston, the JTTF spoke with the older brother after his return from Russia, but what were they supposed to do, put him under 24 hour surveillance? I keep reading on here about the police/feds abusing their power but now they didn't do enough to stop him. Its OK for LE to question someone returning from Russia, but not OK to question someone with an AR strapped to their chest walking down the street. With hindsight, anything can be improved upon. Overall, I think they did pretty good Id'ing/capturing/killing both terrorists in less than a week. -
I can see a limited use for the LC380. The LCP can be a little snappy for inexperienced or smaller shooters. Same could be said for the LC9. I would imagine the recoil from an LC380 would be minimal. While not as small as the LCP, I think the LC380 is still concealable, especially for smaller framed females. In addition, I compared both the LC9 and LC380 side by side and the recoil spring was noticeably lighter. It could make racking the slide easier for females and the elderly. I agree that a compact 9mm is probably best for most people but it definitely has its place for certain shooters.

I just did a little research on Texas laws. Texas prohibits open carry of handguns, but its not so clear on long guns. Here's what texasgunlaws.org says: "Q: Can I carry a firearm on my person? A: Yes, with proper licensing (Concealed Handgun License) you may carry a pistol or revolver on your person so long as it remains concealed. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed, but must be carried in a manner not calculated to cause alarm, and do not require a license." So causing alarm is subjective, however the officer was dispatched because someone was alarmed by a man walking down the road with a rifle slung to his chest. Honestly, the officer can't say, "Screw this; I'm not going to even check this out." He has a duty to find out if its a Boy Scout march or a deranged gunman looking to kill LEO's. Put yourself in the officer's shoes. How would you interact with a completely unknown person with an AR at the ready? Would things be handled differently if the rifle was over his shoulder? I bet most people on this board could shoulder the weapon and get three rounds off in no time. Could things been handled better by both sides? Absolutely. I just didn't get the feeling the officers were acting out of control from the video portion I saw.

V.A. Shrink Admits $3K Bonus for Seizing Guns
diablo982 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Couldn't agree more. I look at every news source (left or right) with a bit of skepticism. This doesn't come close to passing the smell test, i.e. anonymous source with a disguised voice, non-established news reporter, grandiose claims, etc. I guess it could be true, but I would need more confirmation before accepting it as fact. Of course if the implied message fits in with your preconceived notions, then the news source is good to go. -
I'd be down for one; possibly two depending on my "discretionary budget" when it comes time to order.

My understanding is if the sale originated through an internet site, it would require the background check. For example if someone posted in the "for sale" section of TGO, that face to face transaction would require a background check. A word of mouth sale to a stranger would not. From what I've seen, this proposed legislation has holes so big you could drive a truck through them. What is a gun show sale? If the transaction is done in the parking lot, does it count? How about across the street? This "common sense" feel good legislation is a joke.

I saw this article in the Washington Post, a strong supporter of anything anti-gun. The tone of the article suggests disappointment with the fact the NRA is winning and their side is losing. And it appears calling/e-mailing your reps is working. Good thing the other side can't figure that out. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/nra-tactics-erode-post-newtown-support-for-gun-control-measures/2013/04/05/fa932046-9d52-11e2-a941-a19bce7af755_story.html?tid=ts_carousel “I was sabotaged by the NRA,†said state Rep. Michael Paymar, a St. Paul Democrat who authored the gun-control package he thought had a good shot at passing the liberal state House and Senate. The Minnesota measures had been supported by the White House, with President Obama paying a visit in January and Vice President Biden calling legislators in March. But their efforts were not enough to counteract gun rights advocates. NRA alerts warned that the background checks proposal would result in increased costs and could lead to the establishment of a government gun registry, while achieving no provable reduction in the crime. Republican state Rep. Tony Cornish said he received 2,897 e-mails about the bills while they were being considered last month. “Only five were in favor,†he said.

Looks like Beretta IS pulling up stakes.
diablo982 replied to Steelharp's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Good for Beretta but I can't help but think of all the workers who will lose their jobs thanks to the moronic legislature. Realistically, only management employees will get any relocation benefits. The rank and file worker can pay their own way or be replaced with new workers in the relocating state. The local economy will suffer and unemployment will skyrocket in that one county, but the liberals in Baltimore city and elitists in the Maryland-DC suburbs won't care. They will hang their hats on making Maryland a kinder, gentler state. Never mind the fact that in 2012 only two Maryland homicides were committed with a rifle; neither being an "assault rifle." -
State (CO) grants Secret Service vast new powers
diablo982 replied to RED333's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Most states grant federal law enforcement officers some powers already, including Tennessee since at least 1989: 38-3-113. Federal officers making arrests for nonfederal offenses. A sworn federal law enforcement officer, who in official capacity is authorized by law to make arrests, shall, when making an arrest in this state for a nonfederal offense, have the same legal status and immunity from suit as a state or local law enforcement officer if the arrest is made under the following circumstances: (1) The officer reasonably believes that the person arrested has committed a felony in the officer's presence or is committing a felony in the officer's presence; (2) The officer reasonably believes the person arrested has committed a misdemeanor that amounts to a breach of the peace in the officer's presence or is committing such a misdemeanor in the officer's presence; or (3) The officer is rendering assistance to a law enforcement officer of this state in an emergency or at the request of the officer. -
That was great to see! I spent today getting the boat ready for early-spring largemouth. It looks like its time to get fishing.

The Sequester has hit close to home.
diablo982 replied to Randall53's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'm sorry you feel that way. I guess my step-sister nurse who busts her ass for the VA is part of the problem; I will be sure to let her know. And no, the welfare people did not take a hit. The SSI recipients received COLA raises ( like the military) for the last two years. Meanwhile, my step-sister who works for a living will have no pay raises for at least 3 years, and the latest talk in congress is to cut her pay 5.5 percent. She's not complaining, but it doesn't seem fair to me that the welfare cheats are not asked to make any sacrifice. I'm sorry that your disability check was cut 9.2 percent, but it was not the rank and file government worker who did it. You can thank the president and both sides of congress for this mess. -
I agree with Razz's post. Sometimes things aren't always what they seem. I remember a few years ago a retired police officer in NY tried to intervene when two men were fighting on the ground; one armed with a gun. The armed guy didn't drop his weapon, and was shot to death by the retired officer. It turned out the "gunman" was an off-duty LEO who was wrestling with a robbery suspect. If something is blatantly obvious like an active shooter, I will intervene. Not to sound cynical, but everyone else is on their own.
