i'm actually surprised at how good the trigger is...  i read the cmmg lower parts triggers are hit or miss.... i seemed to got a smooth one with a crisp break...   i just couldn't justify spending $200+ on a trigger.....  

i think i'll use my laser sight to get it to 50 yards, and then sight it in at 200 with ammo...

Thanks!  Should I zero my scope at 50 yards?   I'm no expert on scopes, but I've read that zeroing a .223 at 50 yards will also get you close to zero at 200 yards....  any tips or suggestions?  I'll just be target shooting from 100-600 yards....  it's a BDC sight picture, so according to Nikon Spot On website, if I zero it at 50 yards, then the bottom circle will be around 600 yards at 10x-12x zoom....

My very first AR build. I wanted to make something different than a standard AR-15, so I decided to try to make one that can hit in the 500-600 yard range. Here's the parts list. Used a screwdriver to pry it open as far as it would, and pushed it very very slowly until it was in place...

Watch Iraqveteran8888's youtube series on refinishing a mosin....  even if you don't actually refinish the wood, it's a very informative series on how to clean out the chamber and barrel to avoid the "sticky bolt syndrome" or any other problems that cosmoline might cause...   here's a link to the one I refinished around Christmas time using his techniques... it takes some time but I think it's worth the time/sweat you put into it! http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/55920-refinished-mosin-nagant/

The coffee table idea is awesome, but I have neither the money, nor the space for one....   As for the ammo crate I got... it was from midwayusa

I drilled two small holes and hot glued in magnets that way its held in the same place it was originally shipped in, but now it's easy to get in and out

I was thinking about putting some Trim Lok, or something similar around the edges

So I just purchased my first crate of surplus mosin ammo, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with the wood crate and the spam cans after I use up all the ammo... Right now, all I can come up with is turning the wood crate into a shelf/cabinet to store my gun cleaning supplies in, over top of my workbench. And maybe use the spam cans as empty brass containers for my 9mm and 45ACP, until I can start reloading. So does anybody else have any clever ways to reuse these items? I hate to throw them out, especially being historical pieces

I did not come up with this idea, I saw a guy do this on a 10/22 Takedown video... I just thought I'd share this clever way of storing/carrying 22lr ammo. I always hated the flimsy cardboard boxes and every time I carry a box in my range bag, I have loose rounds all over the place. So I invested in a small pelican case. And just FYI, this one holds approximately 400 rounds. Plus, throw in a small silica gel pack and it keeps out the moisture.

After responding to a PM, I decided to post my response as it may help others... I cleaned both of mine at the same time, just make sure you keep all parts for each rifle separated well...  Especially when you take down the bolt and have pieces laying all around.   I used low odor mineral spirits to get the cosmoline off of the metal pieces, and I invested in a handheld steamer to clean out the chamber and barrel http://www.amazon.co...ils_o04_s00_i00   It gets it nice and hot... hotter than shooting ammo thru it, which loosened all the crap out of it really well... If you'll watch iraqveteran8888's video(s) on refinishing it, he shows how to use a 20 gauge bore brush on the chamber with some rubbing compound to clean the chamber... I also did that and it helps quite a bit with smoothing out the bolt action... You'll have to use some Q-tips to clean out the edges of the chamber, because patches can't get in the corners well...   As for the wood, again follow iraqveteran8888's videos, I followed them to a T....   and be sure to take your time, and sand between each step (and use tack cloth)   That's about all the tips I have....  There's no problems in cleaning several at a time, except make sure you have them separate in their own little areas throughout the process. 

If you lived closer, I'd let you use my left over refinishing supplies!  But there's FAR too much cosmoline cleaning to do one for free ;-)   Plus, there's no better way to learn about your weapon than by cleaning/refinishing it yourself!

It's hard to pick my favorite of the 3...  I like the top one because it's similar to the one at my grandparents' house... I like the middle one because of it's age, and the dog... and I like the bottom one because it tells all about the clock on the page....   And if you get a cuckoo clock, you'll gain 5 coolness factor points

Just look at that evil thing... with it's collapsible stock and pistol grip!!!   But I must say it's a nice choice :-)

What does Brass Stacker do? Do they refinish them? I decided to also refinish my 1934 Hex this past week, and it turned out pretty well... sorry for the crappy cell phone picture. On this one, I used 2 coats of the Minwax Red Mahogany stain, trying to get it a little darker.

When I picked up my first Mosin a few weeks ago (a 1943 Izhevsk Round Receiver) I hadn't originally planned on refinishing it, because I didn't want to destroy the historical significance of the piece. But when I tried melting the cosmoline out of the stock via heat lamp... The cosmoline sizzled like bacon grease and actually caused some bumps and rough spots on the wood. After that happened, I decided it best to go ahead and start the refinishing process. So I then did lots of research on the best way to completely strip and redo the finish. I followed the Iraqveteran8888 video, but used Simple Green instead of Krud Kutter, and it actually worked quite well. After some light sanding (trying to keep all the original cartouches and gouges in the wood) 1 coat of Minwax Prestain Conditioner, 1 Coat of Minwax Red Mahogany Stain, and 5 coats of Minwax Wipe-On Polyurethane.... For $700, in this economy, and with the buying panic.... if the M&P Sport is the one you're set on buying, I would snap it up while it was still available... I don't think you'll have buyers remorse anytime soon :-)
