  1. And you just stumbled onto the issue. The 'boro has a very young population compare to most cities, which generally leads to a higher crime rate.
  2. DaddyO, My prayers will be with you and your family, and I thank you father for his service.
  3. Back in the day, most manufacturers built models specifically for chain retail stores. Some stores even had their own brands. Glenfield, Western Field, Revelation, Ted Williams, most JC Higgins, etc. Most of these were made by Winchester, Savage, Remington, Marlin, Mossberg, etc. It just really depends on the model. For the most part, there were only cosmetic differences between the store models and the real McCoy. For instance, the Ted Williams Model 100 is the same as a Winchester Model 94. They varied a little over the years, but the Ted Williams usually have a black forearm cap and lower quality wood stocks.
  4. I paid about $240 for my Mark II .17hmr earlier this year. They had a .22LR sitting right beside it for the same price. It is the heavy barrel, wood stock version. Bud's has them now for $257. The comparable CZ is $406. Around here, the CZs sticker price is between $450 and $500. Again, don't get me wrong. The CZ is probably the better rifle in nearly every aspect. I have a .22 WMR 452 that is fantastic. It is a better rifle (fit, finish, wood quality, etc) than a comparable Savage, but not necessarily more accurate. Price vs accuracy, Savage wins
  5. And the OPs question was about the "most accurate .22 for price". At about half the price of the CZ, I would say the Savage meets the criteria the best.
  6. Thompson Center used to make the Contender in .30-30 IIRC. Take a look at the Hornady Leverevolution ammo. I have been playing with it over the summer, and am pretty impressed so far.
  7. I agree with most of the others. For the money, it is pretty hard to beat the Savage, especially the heavy barrel models. The CZs are incredible rifles, but are almost twice the price of the Savage.
  8. I am not a big Glock fan, but there is just something about the G30 and especially the G30SF that I really like. Hard to argue with 10rd of .45ACP in that small a package. It is also the only Glock that is a natural pointer for me. I know it doesn't make any sense, but it is true for me.
  9. Just be prepared to kick a couple of mall-ninja's out of the way to get to the counter. The first couple times I was in there, they had 3 or 4 "very large regulars" just standing at the counter blocking the isle. They were just shooting the bull with one of the employees, and making it really difficult to get around the store. The last time I was in there, it was much better. That is not an indictment of the staff. They have always been helpful and pretty informative. Just need to clear out some of the riff-raff IMHO
  10. It is really hard to beat the value and quality of Nikon and Leupold, especially in their mid-range models. I also like what I have seen from Vortex. Agree 100% on the magnification range. Also, don't cheap out on mounting hardware. I think on my next build, I am going to try one of the 45* off-set mounts. That allows a co-witnessed non-magnified sight, and offset scope.
  11. If you want to go iron sights, then the Winchester 94 is very hard to beat. If you want to mount an optic, then save yourself the headache and go with the Marlin 336. Both are time tested and proven platforms. Personally, I prefer the Winchester, but the Marlin's are great guns as well. Ammo is readily available, but varies quite a bit in price.
  12. Kids and dogs you can bribe into compliance. Cats, not so much.
  13. If he knows that you are going to regularly buy specific items, Chris will probably keep them in stock for you. Right now he just tries to stock the most common items and stuff he gets really good deals on.
  14. Reloader's Bench in Mt Juliet is probably your best source. Nashville Sporting Arms, G&L Hendersonville, Lebanon Gun Shop, and Outpost all have a small selection of supplies. I am sure some others to as well.
  15. Maybe Dr Phil will throw in a few private counseling sessions. That family needs some help!

    Remington 700

Nothing wrong with the ADL, but it is a lower end gun. That price is way too high. Academy's website shows $379.
  17. Sorry for your loss

    Remington 700

That is a very personal choice, but don't cheap out. There are a lot of factors to consider, but his hunting conditions probably should have the biggest impact. If he is hunting large open fields, the recommendation would be a lot different than hunting in heavy brush. Personally, I really like the 1.5-6x42 that Nikon makes. Some folks don't like the Nikon scopes, but I have several and haven't had any issues. Leupold makes a couple of 2-7x33 (IIRC), but I would rather have the larger front objective.
  19. I prefer something a little larger for deer sized or larger game, it is pretty hard to beat the .243 for flexibility especially with modern ammunition.

    Remington 700

Overall, the M700 is an excellent firearm. There are a lot of different models available, so it really depends on what model he was looking at know good a deal it was.
  21. It sounds like it is a little too high on the trunk to be a beaver.
  22. Yep. What did you see at the base of the tree? Small pieces of bark, wood chips, fine dust, nothing?
  23. Welcome I too have to go a lot of places where carry isn't allowed. You will be amazed at how much the situational awareness you gain from carrying will help you in situations where you can't.
  24. At least it wasn't reported as automatic weapon with a high-capacity clip
  25. I would try one of the Kydex holsters like the AHolster mentioned above, and cut out around the mag release. The thickness of the kydex my keep you from releasing the mag. You might also look at getting something like the Desantis Superfly, that has the extra flap to keep from printing. You could cut a hole in the outer flap, and that may provide enough spacer to eliminate your issue. I agree.
