Mosul dam break anytime killing 1 million people
quietguy replied to MacGyver's topic in General Chat
As usual, I got to go with OS on this one. There are two issues with Islam - radicalism and the fundamental association with Sharia law. If you want to practice your faith, accept that I have different beliefs, and adhere to our laws - I have no issues. You want to call me an infidel and come after me and my family, totally different story. I grew up in a community, in Middle, TN, that had two fairly prominent Muslim families. Their children attended a Christian school because it was the best education available, but they continued to practice their religion. We didn't always agree on some topics, but we could debate and accept the other's opinions. One of the children came under fire a couple of years ago when they were appointed to a mid level state position, for which they were extremely qualified. A few of ignorant legislators ran screaming to media that we were "putting sleepers" in high-level positions. They saw the last name and their knees started to jerk. This was a natural born US citizen and a member of family that are pillars of their community. I can understand mild suspicion, but a little research should have put that to rest. If you look at the statistics from all sides, there are somewhere between .05-10% of Muslims that practice radical Islam and/or refuse to accept any legal authority outside their faith. I am in position to condemn an entire religion based on at worst 10% of its adherents. I probably disagree with 30% of my fellow Catholics, but they are entitled to their beliefs. I have a hard enough time trying keep myself on the track that I think is right for me, I don't have the bandwidth to impose by beliefs on anyone else. Vive et vivat! -
Even if it is working properly, you could still have some moisture inside. Turn the phone off ASAP. Fill a small container with dry rice, and immerse the phone inside. Let it sit for a couple of days in a warm dry place. Then you can use it as described above, as an iPod, etc.

The real problem with California is CARB, and they impact the price we pay for everything with a fuel burning engine - from cars to weed-eaters.

We have a shortage in refining capacity, and the refineries have shifted production to diesel. According to some friends in the industry, it takes them about 6-8 weeks to shift production. Since freight is tailing off somewhat, you will probably see gas prices trend back down in a few weeks. But again, the EPA has made it almost impossible to add refining capacity or the market could help stabilize itself.

I am always very careful with HF purchases. Mostly tarps and casters, but I do have an electric chainsaw sharpener that works great.

If he is in town, he will. Ronnie is a super nice guy, and always up for a conversation about guns, cars, or cameras. He's a businessman and will get whatever he can for his product. He married a former state House rep, so that is probably the reason for the push. Its a silly waste of resources, but Ron Ramsey sent $500k to Virginia for a museum project a few years ago and nobody batted an eye.

Don't forget that it will grant you immortality, grow a beanstalk to an extra dimension, and get Cruz elected.

Gift to wife (Kind of weapons related) Oldie but a goodie

We call that stupid tax, and I have paid more than my share. You should have listened to Gracie. -
Sounds like we are pretty much on the same page. What usually matters in hunting is a cold-bore shot with no scope adjustments. Personally, I like a 200yrd zero on bolt guns, and 75-80yrds on brush guns. As long as you know what you are doing and know your gun, it doesn't really matter.

I guess I just address a deer rifle differently. I rarely fire more than 10-12 shots a year out of my deer rifles, so buying a box of quality ammo that I will use in the field isn't a big deal.
-
I love a good Firefly reference.
-
Agreed, but does shooting surplus FMJ really give you much of an indication of performance in hunting conditions? My primary deer rifle is .308, so I get where you are going. However, the thread is about hunting. I have never judged my hunting rifles on performance with mil-spec or surplus rounds. I want to know how my rifle will perform with the actual round I will be using, whether it is off the shelf or hand-loaded.
-
I agree. There are probably more quality factory hunting rounds for 30-06 than any other rifle cartridge, and they are readily available.
-
Hard to beat a Savage 110/111 or Remington 700. You can't really go wrong with .270, .308, or .30-06. Most of the package scopes are ok, but that is a good place to spend a little extra money. Another option, especially if you are hunting in heavy brush, would be a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94. The Marlin is easier to mount a scope if he needs it.

Congrats on the new toy Like Comms stated, you can just change the barrel. The mags work fine for either. I have a Lone Wolf kit for mine that changes the spring was well, and runs great. .357SIG is a lot of fun Regarding reliability, mine has always run fine on factory loads.

SUV vs 4-door truck with a camper air conditioning
quietguy replied to JReedEsq's topic in General Chat
I don't know if they still make it, but Ford used to make a truck with an extended cab and 5 1/2' bed. You can seat 4-5 comfortably, but basically keeps you in the wheelbase of a short bed regular cab truck. The dogs will probably be fine if you get a shell with good ventilation and don't leave them in there when the truck isn't moving. -
More on TN pro gun bill hearings
quietguy replied to Dustbuster's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
NRA ratings mean nothing in Tennessee politics. They aren't very active in the legislature, and don't give money. -
If you have no other choice, I guess you are right. But, as analog_kidd pointed out, you are essentially trading a dollar for a quarter. I'll be glad to make that trade any day.

Vortex Crossfire II, Bushnell AR BDC or Leupold VXR
quietguy replied to I am Groot!'s topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have a set that I have tinkered with, and liked them. The co-witnessed pop ups just work better for my current setups. They will be the focus of my next build. -

You are probably making a good choice. As an alternative to your Troy sights, you can always look a canted sights like the XS Threat Interdiction series. -
Check out the Ed Brown or Wilson Combat extended releases. I have large hands, and don't have the same issue, but my Wilson has their extended release and the top of the left side grip is tapered. It really does give a very positive transition when releasing the slide. Also check out the Springfield Range Officer. That is the best "out of the box" competition gun I have found for the money. I am still trying get the sights right, but everything else is spot on. I have a ton of money invested in custom guns that don't run as well as my RO.

You are right, Leupold's CS is fantastic. Do what works for you. I just shared what works for me. If I pick up an AR I am worried about <150yrds. I want something I can clear the house or take care of a nuisance coyote. I really like to co-witness the sights if I put an optic on a defense gun. Just my preference. I don't have a good magnifier, just a cheap one that I bought on Amazon. I keep it in my grab bag, but don't keep it mounted. I think I paid $60 for it, and about $400 for the EOTech. But you are correct, a good magnifier pushes you towards the $1k price range. That is the beauty of the AR platform. If I want a longer range setup, I can just build a different upper and mount whatever optic I want on it. -

You generally get what you pay for with optics, especially if you stay with known brands. Personally, I prefer a red-dot with the option of a magnifier on my ARs. My EOTechs co-witness easily with the Troy or MagPul pop-ups, and is pretty good up to 300yds.
